Electricity 6pc higher from today

ISLAMABAD – The government has increased the power tariff by 6 percent for the consumers that will come into effect from today.
Ministry of Water and Power a few days back forwarded a summary to the prime minister asking to raise power tariff by six percent to be implemented from October 1. That has been accepted by him thus making the life of the public more miserable.
The already burdened and frustrated public of Pakistan, instead of enjoying any relief given by the government, has been attacked again in financial terms.
The consumers using up to 100 units would now be paying Rs 3.48 instead of Rs 3.29 per unit, the cost of the units ranging from 301-700 would be Rs 8.51 per unit instead of Rs 8.30 and the tariff has been increased by 60 paisas for units consumed more than 700.
The sources said that it is not the only and final increase for the near future, because there are two more phases of tariff increase scheduled in January and April 2009.
The summary sent to Prime Minister was just a formality and it had to be accepted because it is one of the major conditions put by the countryÂ’s loaners that the increase in price of electricity was a must and the subsidy would also be withdrawn from the power sector, official sources said.
Only the lifeline consumers utilising up to 50 units would be excluded from the effect of the raise in power tariff. Electricity price would be raised by 30 percent in total within next few months. Power tariff would be raised by 12 percent in January and 6 percent in April, sources said.
Apart from the IMF, World Bank and Asian Development Bank are also the major actors finalising and directing the government to increase power tariff.
They have allowed the government this year to provide Rs. 55 billion subsidy to power sector against PEPCOÂ’s total financial shortfall of Rs.132 billion in one year. The government is following the instruction of all these loan givers, with minor relaxations, but it is paying no heed towards the financial troubles of the public, the sources said.
The prices of everything are increasing, but when we see the income sources of the masses, there is no increase, rather a decrease and in that situation only a disaster can be expected and nothing else, sources feared.

Springsteen To Perform Full Albums at Giants Stadium

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND TO PERFORM

FULL ALBUM SEQUENCES DURING GIANTS STADIUM RUN

BORN TO RUN, DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN, BORN IN THE USA TO BE PERFORMED IN THEIR ENTIRETY

E Street Band :: 09.20.09 :: Chicago by Chad Smith

In response to the overwhelming fan enthusiasm at Chicago’s Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band live performance of the album Born to Run (read the JamBase review here), Springsteen has decided to perform one classic album each night at East Rutherford, NJ’s Giants Stadium:

09.30 Giants Stadium Born To Run

10.02 Giants Stadium
Darkness on the Edge of Town

10.03 Giants Stadium Born In The USA

10.08 Giants Stadium Born To Run

10.09 Giants Stadium Born In The USA

In Chicago, Bruce began with a varied set list, performed the album portion of the show in the middle of the concert, and continued the show through its grand finale. Said long time manager Jon Landau, “Chicago convinced us that this was really worth doing. The audience was so supportive of the concept that it convinced us to go ahead with this at Giants Stadium.”

Chicago Tribune‘s Greg Kot called that city’s performance “epic,” continuing, “they delivered and then some.”

10 Ways Microsoft Can Turn Around Windows Mobile

NEWS ANALYSIS: Microsoft is upset with the direction of its Windows Mobile division. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that Microsoft and its team of mobile engineers can’t turn things around. The software giant has the opportunity to do so, and compete effectively against Apple, Palm and the RIM BlackBerry. It just needs to remember a few things.
– Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said earlier this week
that his company made some mistakes with Windows Mobile that he hopes to
address (and fix) going forward. According to reports, Ballmer told those he
was speaking with that Microsoft quot;screwed up with Windows Mobile. quot; He

802.11n Makes Official Debut, Keeps Compatibility Promises

With the 802.11n standard officially ratified by the IEEE, the Wi-Fi Alliance has lived up to its promise by grandfathering all Wi-Fi Certified 802.11n Draft 2.0-labeled products to its new certification, called Wi-Fi Certified N, while simultaneously trying to reduce some of confusion that will arise from the dizzying array of feature configurations that comprise 802.11n.
– When the Wi-Fi Alliance announced earlier this summer that the 802.11n Draft 2.0 certification program would be forward-compatible with the full 802.11n standard upon formal ratification of the latter, wireless LAN implementers finally had concrete assurance that they could move forward with 802.11n…

Noah and the Whale Tour & Album Stream

Noah and the Whale Embark on October Headline Tour Supporting Their New Album
NPR Music Offers “Exclusive First Listen”

Noah and the Whale

Noah and the Whale embark on an October headlining tour supporting their new album and its accompanying film The First Days of Spring, out October 6 on Cherrytree/Interscope. They will kick things off at L.A.’s famed Roxy venue on October 20 playing select cities across the U.S. before ending the tour with a special event to be announced soon. In addition, there will be a number of intimate screenings of the film in select cities.

The U.S. release and tour come on the heels of the August 31 U.K. release where the album debuted in the Top 10 and was met with an overwhelming response: NME 9/10 – “…Spiritualized-tinged grandiose beauty,” The Sunday Times 4/5 – “…a masterpiece,” 4/5 Q Magazine – “breathtakingly beautiful,” 4/5 MOJO – “Breathtakingly ambitious.” In addition, the band performed this past August on the main stages of Reading and Leeds, where they shared the bill with Radiohead, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party and Vampire Weekend.

In 2008, chief singer and songwriter Charlie Fink first began thinking of making an album that was also a film, and as he sees it, vice versa. The First Days of Spring was recorded in London and New York with producer Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith, Antony & The Johnsons) and the film was shot on location in London and Surrey with an ensemble cast that includes model Daisy Lowe. The film can be seen as a companion piece to the album, as a visual version of it, or as a piece of work in its own right but this decision is one which Noah and the Whale have decided to leave up to the listener and viewer.

NPR Music is currently streaming the entire new album, one week ahead of its official release. The First Days of Spring is available for free, on-demand listening now through October 6 at npr.org/music, as part of the site’s “Exclusive First Listen” series.

Lego house

Okay, I’ll admit it: I often watch a UK TV cable/satellite channel called ‘Dave’. It has endless re-runs of Mock the Week, Red Dwarf, Jack Dee, Top Gear and all sorts of programmes that might go under the general header ‘enjoyable TV for when you can’t be asked to work your brain or bother with listings’. Just switch to Dave and the chances are quite good there’s something watchable on there that won’t be a weather girl learning to tap dance or someone telling a porker that they really should be dead on that diet.

I also enjoy spin-offs from the Top Gear presenters. Brainiac (Richard Hammond presents, or did) always entertains and the three are generally very sensible in that they pick things that fit their personalities. Clarkson has an affection for the under-celebrated British industrial heritage stuff, kid Hammond does the slightly poppy science, while James May comes across as the understated upper crust English eccentric who is wowed by physics. They are clearly bright guys who can do more than just salivate over a Ferrari or power slide a Noble. Good luck to ‘em. But there are only so many hours in a day and I don’t actually watch all that much TV, guv (honest).

I was, however, particularly intrigued by the tale of TG presenter James May’s Lego house. I have not actually seen May’s ‘Toys Stories’ (great name) but building a full-size house out of Lego sounds like a reasonably daft and oddly uplifting idea. A thousand people put some effort into it.

However, something has gone very wrong, in a typically British, brutally harsh, shot-in-the-foot and totally unforeseen unfolding cock-up sort of way. Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. They did actually complete the Lego house, but it’s a tragic tale.

You’d think the mighty Legoland would perhaps have moved mountains for a positive PR story like that – a full-size house made from little Lego bricks that the long-haired and amiable May from Top Gear is championing. But for some weird reason it was built in a vinyard in Sussex (Denbies) and they need the land back. Why on earth build it there?

You would also think it might have been built on some sort of modular platform – think about it, a Lego construction speciality that a 5-year-old could demonstrate - so that it might, when finished, be easily transported and not cost a small fortune to relocate? Nope. If mobile, it might well have gone on to do a world tour, along with a Lego car and who knows what else.

Oh well, it has had to be torn down. What a waste. I’d like to have seen it in the flesh. And what sort of low-life would nick the Lego cat?

Railroad Earth Tour

Railroad Earth Takes the Both Coasts on Fall/Winter Tour

Railroad Earth

It’s no surprise that the band Railroad Earth took their name from Jack Kerouac’s flowing prose-poem, “October in the Railroad Earth.” Interspersed with memories of the past and the present, the story weaves a complex tapestry of impressions and reflections, all underlining the American history of the workingman. Much like Kerouac, Railroad Earth’s music captures the grit and soul of rural and urban America and translates it into something deeper than just music.

The six-piece ensemble crafts each song artfully, like a storyline in a novel about travel, wonderment, tragedy, and heartbreak. With the unusually soulful and deep writing and vocal delivery of principal songwriter, Todd Sheaffer, combined with instrumentation so colorful you might find them on the Appalachian Trail, Railroad Earth is bringing their slice of American culture on a hefty fall/winter tour spanning both coasts and every major market in between.

Beginning in late September, Railroad Earth will be doing a series of short tours with pivotal performances in various parts of the country. But unlike the speed trains in Kerouac’s novels, this Railroad Earth is in no hurry “to get there fast.”
