A successful Romano sale in Florence proves there are exceptions to recessionary rules
Sotheby’s recent four-day sale of the Salvatore and Francesco Romano collection in Florence contained more than 1,800 lots. International interest in the auction was keen, even though there was not a single masterpiece among the antique statues, Old Master paintings, textiles, pieces of furniture or objets d’art. Many foreign dealers and collectors who had come to Italy for the sumptuous and lively Biennale dell’Antiquarioto (which ended on October 4th) crossed the Arno to the Palazzo Magnani Ferroni for a look even before the official public viewing began. (The auction, which went from October 12th to the 16th, was timed with the Biennale in mind.)
Once the sale started, as many as 22 employees worked the phones, taking bids from Italy and elsewhere in Europe, America and Russia. The first-floor terrace of the palace was tented for the event, and rows of folding chairs were occupied by a changing cast of paddle wielders, many of them dealers. Others loitered in the vast, art-filled, adjoining rooms waiting for their chosen lots to come up. By its end, the sale made more than €10.5m ($15.5m), exceeding the low estimate by a little more than €72,000. Sotheby’s says it is delighted and so are the consigners. …

Troops enter Sararogha
ISLAMABAD (Agencies) – Troops killed 33 militants but faced mortar fire and street battles as they entered militantsÂ’ stronghold of Sararogha during an offensive against Taliban and foreign extremists on Saturday, the military said.
No information provided by the Army can be verified because communication lines are down and journalists and aid workers are barred from access to the area on the wild Afghan border.
The latest casualties reported in a military statement bring to 297 the total number of insurgents reported killed since the operation was launched in the mountainous tribal terrain of South Waziristan on October 17. Seventeen militants were killed and two soldiers injured when government troops surrounded the town of Karama, a stronghold and training centre of Uzbek militants, the military said.
“Fierce fighting is going on between security forces and foreign terrorists present in the area,” it said. In nearby Kanigurram, troops were facing stiff resistance, including mortar fire, the statement added.
“Fighting in streets is going on and house-to-house search is in progress. Terrorists have converted the houses into strong bunkers and are holding towers in strength and with snipers,” it said.
Three militants died during exchanges of fire there, and another 13 were killed when troops closed on the terroristsÂ’ stronghold of Sararogha, the military said.
Around 30,000 troops are taking part in the offensive against an estimated 10,000-12,000 militants in the semi-autonomous and lawless tribal belt. Relief workers say more than 200,000 people have been displaced by the fighting. The operation Rah-e-Nijat launched two weeks back has entered in a crucial phase as strongholds of the terrorists have been surrounded by the security forces in South Waziristan.
“The important phase of operations has commenced on all three axes,” a news release of ISPR said.
On Jandola-Sararogha axis the important stronghold of Sararogha has been surrounded from three sides. On Shakai-Kaniguram axis, Karama has been encircled and clearance of Kaniguram has commenced. On Razmak-Makeen axis security forces have reached the outskirts of Makeen.
On Jandola-Sararogha axis the security forces moving forward have reached the outskirts of terrorists stronghold of Sararogha.
The town has been surrounded from three directions. All the important features and ridges around Sararogha have been taken over by the security forces.
During the process of closing forward intense fire exchange took place. Some 13 terrorists were killed while there is no loss of security forces.
Clearance of the Sararogha town will commence in next 24 hours. There is substantial presence of terrorists in the town. During search at Kotkai, a cache of weapons and ammunition was recovered which includes 1200 live rounds of 12.7 mm, 12 Grenades, one 75 mm RR, one RPG-7, three 12.7 mm guns, two AK 47, one SBRL, and 25 Kgs Potassium.
During search operation at Shishamwam forces recovered one 12.7 mm gun with two spare barrels and one Automatic weapon (type unknown).
On Shakai – Kaniguram Axis, security forces moving from two directions surrounded the town of Karama, a stronghold and training centre of Uzbek militants.
Fierce fighting is going on between security forces and foreign terrorists present in the area. Some 17 terrorists were killed while two soldiers got injured.
Search and clearance operation of Kanigurm has commenced where forces are facing stiff resistance and receiving fire from different parts of the town including mortar fire. Fighting in streets is going on and house-to-house search is in progress. Terrorists have converted the houses into strong bunkers and are holding towers in strength and with snipers.
During exchange of fire three terrorists were killed.
During sanitization of Kund Mela an elaborate IED making factory has been discovered along with two suicide jackets and 50 Kgs of explosive.
After securing Asman Manza feature 1 Km north of Kaniguram 1x 14.5 mm gun, four grenades, five Kgs explosive and one rifle with telescope has been recovered.
On Razmak- Makeen Axis security forces have cleared Nawazkot and have reached the outskirts of Makeen, the base of terrorists in SWA. Makeen is the nerve centre of TTP.
During consolidation and expansion at Sharkai Sar security forces recovered 1x twin barrel of 14.5 mm gun with 2000 rounds and 1x SPG-9 along with 8 rounds.
During search of a compound in Nawazkot, Uzbek and Arabic literature has been found.
Terrorists fired rockets at Green Ridge, resultantly two soldiers got injured.
According to details of various intercepts forces are in control of most of the leading routes thus denying freedom of movement to terrorists in the area. Intercepts have revealed that terrorists are in great disarray and disorganised. The loss of important areas, confiscation of major weapons and ammunition and ration dumps have lowered their morale to a great extent.
As per details of operation Rah-e-Rast in Swat and Malakand is concerned, eight terrorists voluntarily surrendered to security forces at Mankial near Bahrain, Piochar, Besh Banr, Durushkhela, Alamganj and Shalpalam.
Security forces conducted search operation at Shangla, Sambat, Roria, Qambar and Gulibagh and apprehended 11 suspects.
As part of relief activities, 7,203 cash cards have been distributed among the displaced families of Waziristan while 19,348 displaced families of Waziristan have been provided with food items.

Phish Festival 8 :: 10.30.09 :: Indio, CA
Phish Festival 8 :: 10.30 :: Indio, CA |
Festival 8 is not your regular Phish show. It’s not even a typical Phish festival.
Phish put on their first fest in 1996 with The Clifford Ball. 1997 welcomed The Great Went, 1998 Lemonwheel, 1999 Camp Oswego, 1999 brought the epic New Years event at Big Cypress, 2003 found It, and finally, 2004 brought fans to Vermont for Coventry. Festival 8 is the band’s eighth festival. But it also falls on Halloween, making it significantly different than any of the previous events.
Not only does Phish have deep history in regards to throwing festivals (many credit them with helping revolutionize American festivals as we know it), but the band’s Halloween shows are the stuff of legend. Dating back to 1994 when Phish performed The Beatles’ White Album in its entirety (and in order) in Glens Falls, New York, they have donned a “musical costume” for each following Halloween they would play.
1995′s “costume” was The Who’s Quadrophenia performed in Chicago. 1996 was The Talking Head’s Remain In Light busted out in Atlanta, and the last Halloween show Phish performed was in Las Vegas in 1998 where they did The Velvet Underground’s Loaded.
Festival 8 unofficially kicked-off on Thursday night with a soundcheck including teases of “Fuck Your Face” (last played about 20 years ago) and MGMT‘s “Kids,” off their smash hit Oracular Spectacular, which is rumored to be one of the eight remaining possible albums Phish will cover (they have been “killing off” a list of potential albums featured on their website, supposedly leading to the final selection which will be performed in its entirety on Halloween). Toss in the one-of-a-kind, unique stylings of the ground’s art, complete with 140 lit palm trees, “The Coil,” the burning heart of fire, beer tent, The House of Live Phish (where fans can mix songs from this past summer tour), giant Ferris Wheel, and white tents reminiscent of Shoreline, and Phish has turned The Empire Polo Club into what they are calling “Little Vermont.”

Trey – Phish Festival 8 :: 10.30 :: Indio, CA |
Opening the first of eight weekend sets with “Party Time,” the feeling was immediately relaxed, a sort of anything-goes vibe. “Chalkdust Torture” came next, igniting the crowd with its trademark reckless abandon. The deep funk of “The Moma Dance” and a well placed “NICU” continued to build momentum, before a mid-set “Stash” offered the first real jam of the weekend, hitting some high points without getting particularly dissonant or scary.
A rare “I Didn’t Know” saw Jon Fishman play a vacuum solo while simultaneously “sucking and blowing in the shape of an eight,” followed by “Poor Heart” and “Cavern” that gave this portion of the show a real vintage ’92 feel.
“Beauty of a Broken Heart” is a Page McConnell number from his solo, self-titled, 2007 release, and tried to shine in Indio, but this entire set was already mailed in. Not lackluster or performed without passion, but Set I was akin to tantric sex. For all previous fests the band has been careful not to blow their load, instead working the crowd slowly, bringing the masses into a shared state of being that will last for hours and days upon end.
“Time Turns Elastic,” another tune off of the band’s latest release, Joy, concluded an hour-and-forty-minute set with a flurry, especially the last four-minutes, which are by far the most interesting part of the song.
DOS
“Punch You in the Eye” opened up the second set, with the line “where palm trees dipped and seagulls swerved,” drawing a huge response as lighting director Chris Kuroda splashed color upon the trees behind the stage. “Down With Disease” was on fire, bringing some of the most intense jamming of the night with Trey busting out celebratory licks on his Languedoc guitar. Morphing into “Prince Caspian” out of “DWD,” things again slowed a bit, but featured a McConnell led, Wild West-esque, bobble outro before a slamming “Wolfman’s Brother,” which was funky and stripped down featuring a concise Trey and Page led duel. Although a short version of “Wolfman’s,” it was still one of the night’s strongest numbers.
Phish Festival 8 :: 10.30 :: Indio, CA |
The end of the set featured a standard “Joy,” before a menacing “David Bowie,” with Trey remarking, “we’re gonna give you a little hint about the Halloween album now.” A cryptic comment for sure, it’s hard to know exactly what Trey meant, but the obvious answer seems to be that they will not be playing David Bowie’s Hunky Dory, which up to this point was still one of the eight records still “alive” according to the band’s website.
The artistic highlight of the night was definitely “Harry Hood” with the roaming “Balloon Burble,” which is a blimp-like, balloon structure wired for psychedelic color via remote control. At times during the chill “Hood” jam it looked like a giant pill of rainbow that brought many back to Phish’s first festival 13 years ago at The Clifford Ball when the “Hood” jam featured fireworks. Full circle indeed.
A fun closer of “Golgi Apparatus” didn’t have the typical kick at the refrain, “I saw you with a ticket stub in your hand!,” because attendance seems slightly less than anticipated. Perhaps 30-50 thousand people as opposed to the 70 or 80 that the Polo Fields are capable of holding. The “Character Zero” encore was hot and full of gritty rock power chords, but the crowd seemed almost subdued, perhaps in shock that this historic event was finally underway.
Walking out shortly after midnight, a showing of The Shining on a giant movie screen attracted a plethora of bug-eyed campers, while many, including myself crept back to nearby condos and hotels to ponder what Phish had in store for Halloween.

Four Kinds of Vampires that Haunt Your Life (and What to Do About Them)

You are surrounded by vampires.
They circle you, slowly, eyeing your throat, their teeth glistening in the moonlight. Your heart pounds in your chest as they move in, intent on draining your life’s blood for their own unholy nourishment. A scream rises up in your chest as they close in on you, their fangs bared, and then you feel the first pair of teeth sinking into your throat.
“Hey, Dustin, got a minute? I want to tell you about this awesome party I went to over the weekend. We were sooooo wasted, and…”
The horror! The HORROR!!!
The vampires in this tale aren’t the supernatural beings of myth and legend, the Transylvanian undead doomed to walk the night for all eternity, feeding on the blood of the unsuspecting people around them. No, these vampires move about freely in the daylight, and they feed not on blood but on your time, attention, and yes, your very soul. And crosses, garlic, and holy water have no effect on them.
And who are these wretched damned? They come in many forms and wear many guises. Often, you will recognize them not by their own actions, but by their effect on you: the tapping foot, the ignored gestures of impatience, the tightening of the chest as your time slips away, the forced laughter at yet another of their stupid, mean-spirited, or just plain pointless jokes.
There are many kinds of vampires that threaten you daily. Here are four you have probably encountered recently, and how to dispatch them to the realm from which they emerged.
1. The time-sucking fiend
The time-sucking fiend seeks only your time – the more of it they can consume, the stronger they get. They drop by the office with hour-long explanations that could have been summed up in a five-sentence email, they call at all hours “just to say ‘hi’” and simply won’t let you hang up, they CC you and everyone else they know on every email (especially the ones that promise a gruesome death if you don’t follow suit) – and when you actually need them, they’re nowhere to be found.
Like summoning a demon, dealing with the time-sucking fiend relies on powerful boundaries – and also like summoning a demon, you can only count on yourself to maintain those boundaries. While you might have heard business leaders extolling the virtues of an “open-door” policy, you have to realize that an open door is an invitation, and you hopefully know better than to invite a vampire in! It’s better to limit your open door to specific times and schedule the rest of your work around those times.
But the most powerful weapon in your arsenal against time-sucking fiends, your wooden stake, is to just say “No”.
“Hey Jan, got a minute?”
“Oh, sorry, I really don’t. I’m hard at work on this report/email to a vendor/chapter of my novel/game of Solitaire. If it’s important, why don’t you send me an email or we can schedule 10 minutes later this week to discuss it.”
Asserting your unavailability and then taking control of the situation is the key, here. Never leave the time-sucking fiend at a loss for what to do next; instead, offer an option or two (never more) so they feel like their issue will be addressed. But never back down – your time is yours, as long as you treat it as such.
2. The humorless hellhound
The humorless hellhound didn’t quite follow the joke you made at lunch today, and wants you to know it! Besides taking up your time, the humorless hellhound sucks the fun out of life, demanding an explanation of every off-hand comment you or anyone else makes, and complaining about being made the butt of a joke by someone else. They’d never get offended and confront the person who offended them – that’s what everyone else is for!
Be firm with the humorless hellhound – simply say “It wasn’t important” and steer the conversation back to topics of substance or, if there are none, walk away. Neither defend nor condemn others with whom the humorless hellhound has a problem; your only response should be “Take it up with them”.
Note: Often people who make offensive remarks hide behind the mask of humor (very often these people are vacuous horrors; see below), attempting to deflect attention from their own offensiveness by saying “aw, it was just a joke!” Those who stand up to jerks like that are certified Van Helsings, not humorless hellhounds. Learn to tell the difference – it could save your life!
3. The vacuous horror
The vacuous horror is an idiot, and he or she doesn’t care who knows it. Their pleasures are simple: drink to excess, bed hot chicks or dudes, get sooooo high, play their music sooooo loud, party sooooo hard. Or at least talk about those things – and talk, and talk, and talk talk talk. They don’t want your time, or not just your time, they want your attention – and somehow, your jealousy, as if you should envy their pseudo-wannabe-MTV lives.
The silver bullet here is to tell them it all sounds pretty lame, but of course, nobody uses silver bullets. Too fatal. After all, you kind of feel sorry for them, all shriveled and naked and weak – they’re like children. Stupid, nasty children, but children nonetheless. Your best bet, then, is to treat them as blood-sucking fiends, carefully limiting their access and steering them towards matters of more substance. A curt “Yeah, that sounds great. Listen, I’ve got to get going…” might be called for if they just won’t pass on to the next world, though…
4. The detail demon
While attention to detail is important, the detail demon isn’t concerned with making sure things work, he or she is concerned with a thousand minor points that have no significance or bearing on anything outside of her or his decomposing mind. The detail demon wants to discuss the pros and cons of the serial comma in the corporate stylebook, and s/he wants to discuss it now. For a really, really, really long time.
Fortunately, the detail demon is easily dispatched. Like the time-sucking fiend, under no circumstances give the detail demon any control over your time! Instead, ask them to write up an itemized list of their concerns and email it to you (or otherwise deliver it) so you can review them thoroughly. Since most of their concerns will not matter much, you can usually just give them a simple “go ahead” on the changes they suggest; anything of actual importance they bring up actually does need to be addressed, so they’ve just saved you some time! Turning the vampire’s power against them – that’s ninja-level stuff!
Who’s haunting your house?
These four aren’t the only vampires prowling the streets and hallways of our lives. For the good of your fellow Lifehack readers, what other kinds of vampires have you run into lately? And more importantly, how did you vanquish these foul, foul beasts? The future of all our productivity may depend on you!
(Happy Halloween!)
