Sun Eye Candy: John Lydon

HEY, JOHNNY ROTTEN, YOU’RE MIDDLE AGED!

A hearty, happy 54th birthday to John Lydon! As the frontman/shit instigator for the Sex Pistols and Public Image Ltd. (PiL) he’s shaken up the musical establishment, left bruises on his contemporaries, hawked up more spit on stages than almost anyone but Joan Jett, and coincidentally made some of the most memorable (and forgettable) rock of the past 40 years. Love him or hate him (or perhaps most appropriately, a swirled mixture of the two), but there’s really no way to NOT react to Lydon, who excels at getting a rise out of even the most jaded amongst us. For example, JamBase’s Associate Editor – a Lydon vet since the early ’80s – once saw the man perform two songs before revealing that he had a banana lodged in his bum, which he then gave to a fan in the front row. Such antics are commonplace and intrinsic to Lydon’s, uh, charm. He’s one of those beasts put here to scatter the herd and incite riots, big and small. So, we say screw the Queen, God save Johnny Rotten!

We begin our natal day salute with some sandpaper PiL fun captured in the early ’80s in Tokyo.

Still a dead sexy spot of rebellion despite being covered by some god awful establishment acts in the ensuing decades, “Anarchy In The UK” will be a musical middle finger held aloft around the globe for as long as young men and women have a need to tell off those in charge.

There’s a great many Public Image Ltd. echoes in the current crop of Brooklyn indie acts rising in fame and popularity. Lydon just got to this sound about three decades before y’all!

Here’s Johnny and PiL’s Keith Levene chatting about their high minded notions for the band. It’s hard to know how much of what Lydon says is pure cheek and how much pure inspiration.

Today’s highly lucrative pop-punk acts have done little to improve on this one.

The sessions for 1986′s Album, where these two cuts are plucked from, featured Bill Laswell, Ginger Baker, Nicky Skopelitis, Tony Williams, Bernie Worrell, Jonas Hellborg, Steve Vai and other revered jam/jazz scene luminaries. It remains one of the great distillations of ’80s Cold War fear and apprehension.

And one for the Queen, and we think they really mean it, man.

Apple iPad Challengers Include Amazon, Intel Netbook App Store

Despite the hype surrounding the Apple iPad tablet PC and a lower-than-expected price, it’s still unclear how well the iPad will fare in the marketplace. The iPad faces a variety of competitors, including Amazon.com’s Kindle line of e-reader mobile devices, Intel’s beta AppUp Center for netbooks, and user concerns about whether its functionality justifies its cost.
– Apple finally announced the iPad, its tablet PC, at a Jan. 27 presentation
in San Francisco. The
high-intensity buzz that built online in the weeks and days before the device’s
unveiling will likely continue for some time to come, as the same analysts and
pundits who debated the then-vaporware’s…

Amazon Kindle May Beat iPad in Short Term, but Future Unclear

Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos says millions of Kindle mobile devices have been sold, placing the online retailer in a strong position in the e-reader market. However, the release of Apple’s iPad tablet PC has the potential to put long-term competitive pressure on the Kindle and its other rivals. Amazon.com seems to be preparing for that eventuality by releasing an SDK for developers to use to create applications for the Kindle, but Apple is also planning an apps ecosystem for the iPad.
– Amazon.com is unlikely to see the momentum for its popular Kindle e-reader checked
in the short term by the release of the Apple iPad. However, recent moves on
Amazon.com’s part suggest that the company sees the iPad and other tablet PCs
as something of a competitive threat, while some analysts s…

Scorpions: Final Album/Tour

WHO WILL ROCK THE HURRICANES WHEN THEY ARE GONE?

Scorpions

After the release of their next album (Sting in the Tail, arriving March 23) and a three-year mammoth tour, which will take them across five continents, one of the most successful rock bands in the world, Scorpions, will be ending their career.

“While we were working on our album these past few months, we could literally feel how powerful and creative our work was – and how much fun we were still having, in the process,” said lead singer Klaus Meine. “We want to end the Scorpions’ extraordinary career on a high note. We are extremely gracious for the fact that we still have the same passion for music we’ve always had since the beginning.”

“So, at some point,” added guitarist Matthias Jabs, “it came to us to end our career with this exceptional album.” Rudolf Schenker said, “The three year tour through five continents is meant to be a huge blowout, where we can party with our fans and say goodbye. When I started out, I had a lot of wishes. It’s crazy, I achieved more than I ever even dreamed of.”

During their 40-year career, Scorpions have sold over 100 million albums and received many awards, such as the World Music Award and several Echos – the German equivalent to the Grammy. Today they still play sold-out venues around the world. Not long ago, 152,000 South Americans came to 15 Scorpions concerts between Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City. Their song “Wind of Change” has become an anthem for the fall of the Iron Curtain.

The tour will launch in the band’s home country Germany in May. After that, they will be touring through North America before they continue their journey through five other continents until 2012.

What The iPad Means For Media Distribution In The Future

Many years ago (almost five years ago in fact) I wrote an article about what the music industry might look like in a digital distributed world.
My premise was that thanks to networked portable devices and the Long Tail, bands would survive because distribution networks would allow them to reach their fans much easier. In effect, [...]

Haale/The Mast: Firedancing Video

FUSION FIREBRAND’S NEW BAND ON NEW YEAR’S DAY

We’ve been digging Haale for a while (see our 2008 feature for details). So, we’re excited to see that she and creative foil Matt Kilmer have formed a new band called The Mast. They’ve got a cool, uplifting video shot with some firedancing friends on the first day of this New Year. Like much of this pair’s work, it is an invitation to kneel and kiss the ground, music that situates us in the present away from so much of our fear and meandering thoughts. The Mast plans to release new songs, hopefully with accompanying videos, throughout this year.
