International drug ring suspect arrested
Montenegrin police have arrested a person in Podgorica for whom Italy has issued an Interpol warrant for suspected involvement in an international drug ring. Police stated that the person is suspected in Italy in a case related to an international cocaine smuggling operation.
Professional military by 2011
The Serbian military will be almost completely professional by 2010, with more than 10,000 soldiers who chose to make the military their profession. By abolishing the military obligation, which has existed since the time of Prince Mihailo Obrenović III, the country will complete the changes that began after the collapse of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
New Serbia criticizes Belgrade administration
New Serbia (NS) has begun an action for getting a petition signed for holding emergency local elections in Belgrade. “The departure of the current government is the only way to end the destruction of the city, stop the financial collapse and protect the citizens of Belgrade,†NS City Council President Borislav Borović said.
Americans arrested taking children out of Haiti
Ten American citizens have been arrested on suspicion of attempting to take 33 children out of Haiti as part of an illicit adoption scheme. The five men and five women – who deny the allegations – were detained when their bus was stopped at Haiti’s main border crossing with the Dominican Republic.
Health Minister: Pandemic not finished
Health Minister Tomica Milosavljević told daily VeÄernje novosti that the swine flu pandemic has not yet ended. He said that the flu season lasts until April in the northern hemisphere.

FlyNiki to begin Belgrade flights
FlyNiki owner Niki Lauda said that he will be piloting airplanes from Vienna to Belgrade once his company begins flying the route on Monday. FlyNiki is the first low-cost airlines that received a license from the Serbian Directorate of Civil Air Travel since the state parliament ratified the open air agreement.
HDZ leader indicted for misuse of position
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) in Bosnia-Herzegovina leader Dragan Čović was indicted under the suspicion of misusing his position as party leader. The Mostar canton prosecution indicted Čović and several other people for a misuse of position regarding the privatization of mobile telephone operator Eronet, Chief Prosecutor Nijaz Mehmedbašić confirmed.
Peru death toll rises to 20 after floods in south
The number of people killed in heavy flooding over the past several days in southern Peru has risen to 20, local officials say. They say that at least five more people are missing and almost 40,000 others have been affected.
Gnjilane: Suspect tried to bring bomb into school
The Kosovo Police Service stated that it has arrested a Serb man who was trying to bring a bomb into a school in the village of Kusce, near Gnjilane. KPS regional spokesperson Ismet Hashani told the Tanjug news agency that a school worker first noticed the man with a bomb in his hand, reacted quickly and was able to take the explosive away from the suspect, after which he called the police.
Shooting suspect surrenders to police
Shooting suspect Marko Radenković, who wounded four men at a Novi Sad club early Saturday morning, turned himself in to police. According to the Novi Sad police administration, Radenković appeared at the police station in the company of his lawyer and was taken into custody.
Parliamentary committee to discuss bridge
On a request made by the opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the parliamentary speaker has scheduled a meeting of the Traffic Committee for Tuesday. The committee will be discussing the problems with the cracks in Belgrade’s Gazela Bridge.

Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Äukić-Dejanović said that she would hold consultations next week with the leaders of the parliamentary MP groups. The consultations would focus on the declaration for condemning the war crimes in Srebrenica.

Talk of a European bail-out for Greece
• JUDGMENT will be passed on the Greek government’s budget-cutting plans by the European Commission on Wednesday February 3rd. The country’s public finances are in a parlous state and fears that the markets may lose faith in Greece altogether were only partly allayed when it recently raised €8 billion ($11 billion) in the bond market. Amid fears that Greece may not present a credible plan for fiscal austerity, talk is circulating of a bail-out, perhaps through a big fund underwritten by the commission or France and Germany, that could offer loans, albeit at punitive rates, to see Greece past this tight spot. And Greece is not the only member of the euro-zone with wobbly public finances.
• AN EXTENDED period of belt-tightening is likely to be the theme when Barack Obama presents his fiscal budget for 2011 on Monday February 1st. To cope with a growing deficit the president is set to propose a three-year freeze on some domestic spending programmes, as he trues to save some $20 billion in 2011. Spending on national security, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid will be excluded from any freeze. Mr Obama is also poised to stop tax cuts for oil companies, investment-fund managers and anyone earning over $250,000 a year, although families earning less than that will have tax cuts extended. Mr Obama has threatened to veto spending that would increase the deficit. …
