Google Editions Allies with ABA in Ebook War vs. Amazon, Apple

Google Editions is rolling out this summer with the American Booksellers Association (ABA) as a key partner, the New York Times said June 29. The ABA plans to make Google Editions the main source of ebooks on the Websites of hundreds of independent booksellers around the country. Google’s any Web browser, any device model is a departure from the proprietary format and device approaches favored by Amazon with its Kindle e-reader and Apple with its iBookstore for the iPad and iPhone. – Google Editions, the search engine’s effort to follow the

DBS-OCBC union most likely in any consolidation

Probability of merger between DBS (D05.SG), OCBC (O39.SG) is high in context of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew’s recent comments that Singapore banks may need to consolidate further to grow, says UOB KayHian.

The broker notes DBS’ ambition to become pan-Asian bank: “DBS needs a larger-scale home base through potential acquisitions in Singapore to support meaningfully sizeable acquisitions overseas.”

STI falls 0.5% to 2,820.92 at 9:53 a.m.

Singapore’s Straits Times Index fell 0.5% to 2,820.92 as of 9:53 a.m. local time. More than four stocks declined for each that rose on the 30-member gauge.

Shares on the measure trade at 13.8 times estimated earnings, compared with about 17.4 times at the end of 2009, according to Bloomberg data. The following shares were among the most active in the market.

Lion Asiapac +25% on 10 cents/share dividend

Lion Asiapac (L08.SG) gaps up at open, last +25% at almost 3-month high of $0.325 on above-average volume, as investors flock to otherwise thinly-traded stock after company declares interim dividend of $0.10/share to be paid July 29, says Dow Jones.

Together with special dividend of $0.15/share issued in April, total yield so far for FY ended June comes to a whopping 96.1% based on yesterday’s closing price.

Osim started at Buy by OCBC with $1.22 target

OCBC Investment Research has started Osim (O23.SG) at Buy with $1.22 target, says Dow Jones.

OCBC says massage-chair maker set for increased growth in 2010 after returning to profitability last year. Expects improving economic conditions, Osim’s constant renewal of products to meet changing consumer needs to drive growth.

Interest in Singapore Offshore & Marine down, says BoA-ML

Institutional interest in Singapore offshore and marine stocks dwindling amid negative newsflow from recent Gulf of Mexico oil spill, reluctance to buy into high-beta sectors, says Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, according to Dow Jones.

Notes while institutional investors view current valuation in sector as palatable after 2Q stock declines of up to 19% by rig builders, underlying tone remains cautious.

NOL cut to Hold by Phillip Securities with $2.03 target

Phillip Securities has downgraded Neptune Orient Lines (N03.SG) to Hold from Buy, cutting its target price to $2.03 from $2.48, based on 1.3x P/B vs 1.6x previously, on concerns Europe’s debt crisis will trigger slowdown in Asia-Europe trade, says Dow Jones.

“We are cautious on shipping stocks as global trade is likely to be affected by the budget cuts in the euro zone,” says Phillip Securities.

Singapore’s benchmark Straits Times Index rose 0.18% on Wednesday to 2,835.51 points.

Singapore stocks may fall on Thursday after US shares extended their losses overnight, as investors stayed on the sidelines amid conflicting economic data. US private sector employment rose by a paltry amount in June, underscoring concerns about a weak labour market.

Mapletree Investments, a real-estate firm wholly-owned by Singapore state investor Temasek (TEM.UL), said today it hopes to raise $1 billion from an industrial REIT initial public offering. The industrial REIT portfolio will contain only Singapore properties and initially have a value of $1.7 billion.

Cisco Systems aims to prepare potential customers before they commit to building a cloud computing system. Cisco is providing a menu of cloud system components, including products of its own and from partners such as EMC, NetApp, VMware, Microsoft and BMC. – As Cisco Systems reinvents itself partly as a cloud-computing infrastructure
provider, it needs to add a set of services to wrap around all the hardware and
