Yongnam wins $25m MRT Downtown Line 2 contract

Yongnam Holdings, the structural steel contractor and specialist civil engineering solutions provider, has been awarded its first contract for the MRT Downtown Line 2 (DTL 2) valued at $25 million.

The 16.6km long Downtown Line 2 comprises of one depot and 12 stations including three interchange stations. DTL 2 will link to the North-East Line, the North-South Line and the Circle line.

Yongnam says the contract comprises the constructiion of a Cut and Cover Tunnel and the Tan Kah Kee station.

M1 to launch high-speed fibre broadband service

M1 says it will launch its high-speed fibre broadband service with speeds of up to 1Gbps and fixed voice service starting next month.

Four new broadband plans for residential customers with downlink speeds of 1Gbps, 100Mbps, 50Mbps and 25Mbps will be offered on the new fibre network. They will also provide maximum uplink speeds of up to 500Mbps to ensure the best streaming and gaming experience for customers.

F J Benjamin takes majority stake in Catherine Deane’s Arcangel

F J Benjamin Holdings has taken a controlling stake in Arcangel, a brand development and design company owned by one of London’s hottest designers, Irish-born Catherine Deane.

Under the agreement, F J Benjamin purchased 60% stake in Arcangel for US$500,000 ($678,150), making Arcangel a subsidiary of F J Benjamin.

Sarin launches DiaExpert Nano with enhanced capabilities

Mainboard-listed Sarin Technologies, the manufacturer of precision products for the evaluation of diamonds and gems, says it has launched the enhanced DiaExpert Nano rough planning and marking system with an extended range to cover small- to medium-sized rough diamonds.

Sarin says the DiaExpert Nano 6.5 can process diamonds from 0.15 to 0.70 carats in weight in less than one minute total, which includes the time it takes for modelling, planning and marking.

The previous model of DiaExpert Nano system was designed for small rough diamonds between 0.01 and 0.30 carats in weight.

STI falls 0.2% to 2,950.33 at closing

Singapore’s Straits Times Index fell 0.2% to 2,950.33 at the close. The gauge declined 1.3% this month, the first drop since May. Fourteen stocks dropped, while 13 rose on the 30-member gauge.

Shares on the measure trade at an average 14.3 times estimated earnings, compared with about 17.4 times at the beginning of the year, according to Bloomberg data. The following shares were among the most active in the market.

Singtel Optus hires banks for European bond investor meetings

SingTel Optus Pty, a unit of Southeast Asia’s largest phone operator, hired BNP Paribas SA, Citigroup Inc., HSBC Holdings Plc and JPMorgan Chase & Co. to arrange bond investor meetings in Europe, according to two people with knowledge of the sale.
 
The meetings will start in London on Sept. 3, the people said.

Dubai Drydocks’s suit against Singapore tycoon Tan dismissed

A Singapore court dismissed a suit by Dubai’s Drydocks World LLC against Singaporean tycoon Tan Boy Tee for breaching an agreement tied to a $2.4 billion takeover deal.

Drydocks, which sued Tan for breaching a three-year non- compete clause, relied on “hearsay evidence,” Singapore High Court Judge Lai Siu Chiu said in an Aug. 25 ruling, publicly released today. Dubai World’s ship-repair unit is appealing the decision, according to the ruling.

Singapore’s population growth slowest in six years

Singapore’s population increased in 2010 at its slowest pace in six years and the rise in the number of foreigners continued to outpace that of citizens, a sensitive issue in the country.

In the year to June 2010, the population increased 1.8% to just over 5 million, marking the smallest rise since 2004 and a slowdown compared with 3.1% in the year to June 2009, government figures showed.

SMX debuts with limited volumes in gold, crude, dollar

The Singapore Mercantile Exchange (SMX) launched gold, oil and euro-dollar futures on Tuesday and received a muted response from investors.

Gold (SMAUc1) was the most popular contract trading a total of 61 lots by 0755 GMT, each of 32 ounces, or 1,952 ounces. The euro-dollar futures (SMEUc1) were second with 23 lots traded, equivalent to a little under 1.1 million euros ($1.89 million) in value.

Ascendas India Trust target raised to $1.18 by Citi

Citigroup lifts Ascendas India Trust (CY6U.SG) target price to $1.18 from $1.05 after adjusting valuation metrics, keeping Buy call, according to Dow Jones.

Citi tips REIT as defensive play on Indian property, offering 12-month yield of 8.0% vs 5.0%-7.0% for Singapore peers. Research house says portfolio vacancy remains low, with income stream steady. Adds, growth opportunities abundant with capacity to develop another 2.5 million sq ft of space at its Bangalore premises.

REIT off 1.0% at $0.96.
