One of Iran’s most prominent dissident clerics, Grand Ayatollah Hoseyn Ali Montazeri, has died aged 87. Hoseyn Ali Montazeri was a moving spirit in the 1979 revolution which created Iran’s Islamic state, and was at one stage set to become its leader.

Western media commented the decision of the Serbian government to apply for candidate status for becoming a member of the European Union. International media groups stressed that Serbia has made a lot of progress in its European integration this year.

America’s Senate is poised to vote on health-care reform
• AMERICA’S Senate is poised to vote on a sweeping overhaul of the country’s health-care system proposed by Barack Obama. Backers of the bill need 60 votes to ensure that opponents cannot block its passage. They should be able to muster exactly that number if Joe Lieberman, an independent who was formerly a Democrat and has usually voted with his old party, does not follow through on a threat to side with the Republicans over his objections to some provisions of the revised bill. Mr Obama has called for the bill to get through the Senate before Christmas.
• BRAZIL’S tendency to forget about the past will be challenged on Monday December 21st. The president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, is to propose the setting up of a truth commission to investigate torture during the military dictatorship between 1964 and 1985. Though the behaviour of Brazil’s leaders was less far less appalling than in Argentina and Chile, which have already gone through the process of confronting past sins, no one has yet been held to account for the murder and widespread torture of dissidents. The commission will allow a rare glimpse into a troubled period of Brazil’s recent history as no one has yet been faced prosecution after an amnesty law was pushed through a compliant Congress in 1979. …
Analysts: Number of MPs should be decreased
Analysts say that the government’s claims that it will not make constitutional changes because of the economic crisis are pure manipulation. Ruling coalition officials told daily Blic earlier this week that organizing a referendum is impossible because EUR 5mn would be needed for it, adding that Serbia must save money during the economic crisis.
Turkish FM wants visas abolished for Turkey as well
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called on the European Union to enable Turkish citizens to travel throughout the European Union without visas as well. “It is unacceptable that certain Balkan countries that are in the starting phases of association and which have not begun negotiations have received Schengen privileges, and that Turkey, taking into consideration the level it has reached in EU negotiations, has not,†Davutoglu said.
Montenegro: Podgorica airport reopens
The Podgorica airport has reopened after closing down because of poor weather conditions. Airport officials expect flights to function regularly on Sunday.
Weather causes problems in Kosovo
One person has died and ten people have been injured in traffic accidents occurring over the last 24 hours in Kosovo due to poor weather conditions. Kosovo Police spokesperson Arber Beka said that one person died in an accident which occurred near Äakovica, and that there were injuries reported in 16 traffic accidents, and a total of 74 accidents that caused material damage.
“Sweden has recognized Serbia’s effortsâ€
Serbian ambassador to Stockholm Ninoslav Stojadinović said that Sweden was pushing for Serbia’s EU candidacy application, and that its efforts paid off. “As it is known, Sweden supports EU enlargement, especially for the countries of the Western Balkans, of which Serbia is in first place as far as capacities and cadres are concerned, and deserves to be in the EU,†Stojadinović said.
Serbia to apply for EU candidate status
Serbia will submit its application for obtaining the status of a candidate-state for membership in the European Union. President Boris Tadić and Mirko Cvetković signed a demand, in the name of the government, for applying for EU candidacy on Saturday.
Avaya Closes Acquisition of Nortel Business Unit
Avaya is looking to take the lead in enterprise telephony with its $900 million purchase of Nortels Enterprise Solutions business. The enterprise business is the latest unit that bankrupt Nortel has sold off this year. Still, despite its efforts to drastically shrink the company, Nortel is continuing to roll out products, most recently announcing a 100G optical solution.
