Burhanuddin Rabbani killed in suicide blast

KABUL (AFP/Reuters) – Burhanuddin Rabbani, Afghanistan?s former president tasked with finding a peace deal with the Taliban was assassinated Tuesday in a suicide attack at his Kabul home, according to police.
Rabbani, who was president during the chaotic 1992-96 Afghan civil war, was last year appointed chief of the High Council for Peace that President Hamid Karzai tasked with negotiating with the Taliban, so far unsuccessfully.
His plan included offering amnesties and jobs to Taliban foot soldiers and asylum in third countries to leaders. His death is arguably the most high-profile political assassination since the 2001 US-led invasion ousted the Taliban from power 10 years ago and comes just two months after Karzai?s brother Ahmed Wali Karzai was also killed.
?An explosion happened inside the house of Burhanuddin Rabbani as a result of which Rabbani was martyred and several others were wounded,? said Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai. The bomber struck close to the US embassy. It was the second attack within a week to strike within Kabul?s supposedly secure diplomatic zone.
An AFP reporter saw an ambulance at the scene and said police had blocked off surrounding roads.
The reporter also heard guards at the house shouting for an ambulance for Rabbani?s deputy, Mohammad Masoom Stanikzai. There was no immediate official confirmation of whether Stanikzai was injured and no visible damage from outside the house.
Two of the former president?s political allies, who did not want to be named and speaking before police confirmed Rabbani?s death, wept as they told AFP he had been killed.
?Yes, he is dead,? said one of the two sources by telephone.
The Taliban were not immediately reachable for comment, but the insurgency led by its militia has hit Kabul increasingly hard in recent months.
Among the most high-profile attacks was last week?s 20-hour siege of the US embassy and the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) headquarters which left 14 people dead.
Rabbani was president of Afghanistan from 1992 until the Taliban took power in 1996 and headed a country wracked by civil war.
Karzai?s brainchild, the High Peace Council was intended to open a dialogue with insurgents who have been trying to bring down his government since the US-led invasion overthrew their regime in late 2001.
The 68-member council, hand-picked by the president, was inaugurated on October 7, 2010, amid mounting reports of secret peace talks with Taliban leaders and key insurgent groups.
Delivering his acceptance speech, Rabbani said he was ?confident? that peace was possible, according to a statement from the palace.
?I hope we are able to take major steps in bringing peace and fulfil our duties with tireless effort and help from God,? he was quoted as saying.
According to Human Rights Watch, Rabbani is among prominent Afghans implicated in war crimes during the brutal fighting that killed or displaced hundreds of thousands of Afghans in the early 1990s.
?This is a big blow to peace process and huge loss for Afghanistan,? said Sadiqa Balkhi, a member of peace council.
?Professor Rabbani was an influential and spiritual leader and was successful in luring Taliban fighters into peace process.?

Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers :: 09.15.11 :: Van Duzer Theatre :: Arcata, CA

More pics below review!

Bruce Hornsby by James Martin

Bruce Hornsby is a musician who needs no introduction, with notable, well known turns in Bruce Hornsby and the Range, the Grateful Dead, The Other Ones, Ricky Skaggs’s band, amongst other collaborations, forming a musical career that has spanned over 37 years.

Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers entertained the crowd at the intimate Van Duzer Theatre on a Thursday night for over two hours on the campus of Humboldt State University. From the beginning, you could feel that this was going to be a special show as Hornsby was taking requests a couple songs in. These weren’t the usual requests for “Mandolin Rain” (which was not played this night) or “That’s The Way It Is” but songs that had Hornsby going into his wide catalog of music like “Chills” and “Harbor Lights.” The Noisemakers are a group of talented musicians and most have been with Bruce for years. They include John “JT” Thomas on keyboards, the very talented Bobby Read on saxophone and other woodwinds, J.V. Collier on bass, Doug Derryberry on mandolin and guitar, and Sonny Emory on drums.

Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers by James Martin

Hornsby does not only play the Steinway piano, he also brought out the accordion and dulcimer. As he sat down and tuned his dulcimer, he began to go into a song when someone yelled out “Dreaded Spoon.” Bruce explained that he had just tuned for a different song and if the guy had yelled it out a minute earlier he would have played it right then. He instead went into “Jack of Diamonds” which rolled into “Workin’ in a Coalmine.” The fan that called out “Dreaded Spoon” did get his request along with a back-story about the song which involved his trips to the Tastee Freeze with his father, the “Dreaded Spoon” being his father’s implemented “ice cream tax.”

Throughout the night Hornsby’s band was having just as much fun on stage as their leader was since some of the songs that were requested had not been played all year. At one point his bassist J.V. Collier asked if he could do that “one song,” as he wanted to play something he knew, which got a laugh from Bruce and the crowd. That one song ended up being “That’s The Way It Is,” one of the most popular tunes in his repertoire. It was a night full of classics and newer soon-to-be classics, and after the night was over it wasn’t hard to imagine that one day Bruce Hornsby will be in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.

Apple iPad 3 Might Face Trouble at Launch: 10 Reasons Why

Although Apple’s iPad 2 has been on store shelves for only the last several months, plenty of speculation about the device’s successor, the iPad 3, is circulating liberally. Some reports suggest the device could launch as early as this fall, but most analysts believe Apple won’t offer up its follow-up tablet until early next year. In either case, information surrounding the device continues to crop up. But rather than dwelling on those rumors, perhaps it’s a better idea to look at what might happen if and when the iPad 3 eventually launches. Whether it’s made available in October or early next year, the device will face significant challenges that might stymie its chances of dramatically outselling its predecessor. Although Apple might not like to hear it, the tablet space is changing at a torrid pace and the iPad 3′s sales might suffer a bit because of that. The slide show takes a look at some of the ways in which the iPad 3 might face significant trouble when it launches within the next several months. – …
