There were hardly any nominations of “Made in Asia” movies at the 82nd Academy Awards which were presented in Hollywood (USA) on Sunday. From 4 films that were nominated with Asia-focused topics, only a single film, The Cove could win the Oscar. The other three movies were- “Kavi”, “Burma VJ” and “China’s Unnatural Disaster: The tears of Sichuan Province.

“The Cove” has won in the category of “documentary feature”. This movie has got an exploratory-journalism style regarding animal abuse or human health concerns revolving around the dolphins in Japan.

Rajan Zed, highly praised Indo-American statesman has claimed that the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences do not treat Asia well. Asia had given highly talented directors such as Akira Kurosawa, Yasujiro Ozu, Satyajit Ray, etc. but still the Asian films are ignored to the extent when compared to the European films. He has also made a demand to the Academy to introduce new award category of “Best Bollywood Film” for the films made in India.
