The musicians of the American Idol Band have filed suit against series producers, who they accuse of selling downloads and ringtones of songs from the show without paying them.
According to a lawsuit filed on behalf of the band members by the American Federation of Musicians in Los Angeles Superior Court late Friday the suit, the hit show has been selling downloads of performances by contestants since Season 4. Many of the songs were later sold separately as cell phone ringtones.
Although the downloads translate into big sales, the band’s members claim Idol producers are not living up to their contractual obligations and have not provided them with the proceeds of any of the sales.
Last month, Idol bandleader Rickey Minor quietly left the series to serve as leader of The Tonight Show Band.
