“Gossip Girl” “SNL” Skit Offends Staten Island Residents

Font size:

Residents of Staten Island, New York aren’t pleased with the way their hometown was portrayed in a side-splitting Saturday Night Live spoof over weekend.

On last Saturday’s edition of the late-night show, guest host Blake Lively and series regulars hopped on the ferry to poke fun at NYC’s “Forgotten Borough” for a “Gossip Girl: Staten Island” skit.

“In this xenophobic, homophobic alternate universe of ‘Noo Yawk,’ the hair, earrings, cleavage and attitude are as big as the IQs are small,” The Staten Island Advance writes.

SNL writer Colin Jost, who just so happens to be a native of Staten Island, is standing behind his spoof — and its peppering of big earrings, velour tracksuits, and phrases like “yous.”

“Everyone on Staten Island knows people like that or went to school with people like that,” Jost explains. “In some ways, it’s an observation of any suburb of a big city. I do feel like Staten Island is shorthand for suburb of New York in a way.”
