Believe it or not, Google does not have its own native Gmail app for the iPhone. Well, you probably believe it, especially if you use Gmail and have an iPhone. After all, navigating through the menus on a touch-screen can often be clumsy, plus it didn’t look particularly pleasing (aesthetic-wise). The good news however, is that a new version has been optimized for the iPhone, and is already being rolled out as we speak.
While the update is not available to everyone just yet, some users can already load the mobile version of Gmail on their iPhones and use the brand new update. The overall look and feel has been revamped, but nothing too drastic that will put you off using it. Appearance-wise, you might notice a slightly darker blue hue and slightly rounder buttons. One of the biggest changes is that the buttons have been moved around. In fact, some have been eliminated altogether.
New features are the ‘menu’ and large ‘compose’ buttons, located near the unread count. You won’t see the reload button or the search button anymore, but as this updated version is auto-refreshing the reload is no longer required. Thankfully, ‘archive’, ‘more’, and ‘delete’ options have been turned into actual buttons, not just hover-over items (which were often quite clumsy to navigate around on a touch-screen device).
Many smartphone users have been getting a little too frustrated with the Gmail mobile version for iPhone, which is probably why the guys over at Google have decided to push for this new version. This and the launch of the Push Notification-enabled version of the Google Mobile App will make the entire experience just a little more palatable.
Google says that it is still playing around with the ideas for Gmail and the iPhone, so we can’t wait for the real deal.
