Balloon Boy Alive! Falcon Heene Found Safe In Attic

Falcon lives! Yay — we love happy endings.

The boy thought to have traveled thousands of feet in the air in a homemade balloon has been found alive, according to authorities. A massive search for the child was launched this afternoon after one of the boy’s brothers reported that he’d climbed into a homemade helium-filled balloon just before it took off. Police in Larimer County, Colorado say that Falcon Heene, age 6, was found late Thursday hiding in a cardboard box in the attic of his family’s garage in Fort Collins, Colorado.

At least he’s safe — but he would be so grounded!

The balloon rose thousands of feet in the air, but when it landed in a large open field two hours later, there was no basket attached and Falcon was nowhere to be found. Apparently, he managed to untether the contraption and freaked out after it went gliding off into the sunset. Frightened that he’d be in big trouble for letting his dad’s work balloon go, Falcon hightailed it to the garage.

Falcon’s parents, Richard and Naomi Heene, and the rest of the family appeared on ABC’s reality Wife Swap in March. In a 2007 interview with The Denver Post, Richard described becoming a storm chaser after a tornado ripped off a roof where he was working as a contractor and said he once flew a place around Hurricane Wilma’s perimeter in 2005.

Falcon will have a great story to share with his grandkids in about 50 years.
