A Colorado sheriff’s official says a 6-year-old boy climbed into a box that was attached to his father’s homemade balloon, but the box wasn’t found when the craft crashed in an open field early Thursday afternoon. The craft was airborne for more than two hours and sailed through two counties.
Falcon’s dad is a storm scientist, by the way.
Larimer County sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Messick says one of Falcon Heene’s two older brothers saw the boy get into the box or basket, which was attached with pegs. Investigators are looking into every possibility, including whether Falcon was ever in the balloon at all.
Search teams are scouring the area from the house in the direction that the balloon flew.
Falcon’s parents, Richard and Mayumi, have two other sons, Ryan and Bradford. The family was featured on the ABC reality series Wife Swap last March.
