On Sept. 27, Research In Motion introduced the BlackBerry PlayBook, a tablet computer that represents RIM’s big move to stand up to the success of the Apple iPad and Android-based devices, such as the Dell Streak, by reconnecting with its core customer base: enterprise users. The RIM PlayBook features a 7-inch multitouch display, a 1GHz dual-core processor, WiFi connectivity and security features that are the hallmark of the RIM brand. Unlike the Apple iPad, the PlayBook offers micro USB and micro HDMI ports, dual cameras and, most notably, support for Adobe Flash 10.1. The question that almost everyone is asking is: Does RIM have an iPad killer on its hands? Likely not, say analysts, though some quickly dismiss the comparison. The RIM PlayBook, with its focus on the enterprise and not on the consumer market, is a tablet computer that may have the playing field all to itself.
