One week after the Steve Phillips-Brooke Hundley sex scandal, ESPN has suspended Bob Griese over a racially insensitive remark the sportscaster made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya.
On Tuesday, the sports network slapped the former NFL quarterback with a one-week suspension over a seemingly racist comment he made about Montoya, who is Colombian.
During ESPN’s broadcast of the Minnesota-Ohio State game on Saturday, a graphic was shown listing the top five drivers in NASCAR’s points race. Fellow analyst Chris Spielman asked where was Montoya.
Griese replied he was “out having a taco.” The former Dolphins Hall of Famer has twice apologized on air for the remark, but ESPN thinks the pigskin pundit could use a little impromptu vacation to think about his loose lips.
“We’ve spoken to him and he understands why his comment was inappropriate,” says ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz.
Montoya brushed off the remark Sunday, insisting he’d never heard of Griese.
“I don’t really care, to tell you the truth,†the seven-time grand prix-winner replied. “Yeah, I don’t. I could say I spent the last three hours eating tacos, but I was actually driving a car – but that’s okay, I don’t care.â€
