Justice delayed forces people to resort to violence and pick up the gun, former attorney general of India Soli Sorabjee said Wednesday.

“If you don’t get quick justice, you resort to violence. You look for a parallel form of justice delivery system. You seek justice from the gun,” Sorabjee said.

He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 25th international training programme in legislative drafting organised by the Lok Sabha secretariat here.

Some 50 legal officers from 36 countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iraq, Fiji and Thailand are attending the one-month programme during which the foreign delegates will be introduced to the salient features of the constitution of India and a detailed study of the Indian parliament.

Sorabjee stressed the need to make the justice delivery system expeditious in India. “Indian courts can go into the Guinness Book of World Records for the number of adjournments (in a particular case),” he said.

The Padma Vibhushan awardee said the legal drafting in India was complex and urged that it should be made “clear and precise”.

“I don’t understand where is the problem… Why can’t we have easily comprehensible legal drafting,” he said.

“I tell you, draft of income tax law is the most complex to understand. I, despite being a lawyer, seek help from my accountant on what I should be paying or saving,” Sorabjee said.
