Google documents can be used to create letters, presentations, and spreadsheets. But the power of Google Docs goes far beyond this when using templates. You can find templates to quickly create any document you might need, from Christmas wish-lists to forms that organize your emergency contact information, budgets, or time sheets.
The template gallery was launched last year, but has never been open to public submissions until now. If you have a great template you are using with Google Docs, share it with others by submitting it to the gallery! I can see this new feature exploding the Google Docs potential as new and clever templates are added that will expand how we use Google Docs even further.
How to submit a template to Google Docs
- In the template gallery page, there is a new link in the top right hand corner: click on “Submit a template”.

- Next, click on “Select from your google docs” and search the file you would like to upload.
- Click “Select” at the bottom of the screen from which you selected your Google document.

- Enter a description for your template.
- Enter the language of your template, or leave it set to the default (English).
- Click submit template, and you’ve just contributed your Google Template to Google Docs!
- Select up to two categories that apply to your template.
I love using Google docs because they are so easy to share with others. It is exciting to see people now also share their templates with the world, and not just their friends when sharing a working document. I’m already seeing a great number of new templates in the gallery, just by browsing around a little bit. In the gallery view, you can see if a template was made “by Google”, or by a third party. It will show up right next to the template name:
With the rating system in place, it will be interesting to see if any users in particular will pop up as the most popular template designers. I wonder, will Google win that competition, or will it be a Google Docs fan?
