The legendary pop icon expressed what she felt regarding the decision of the Malawian court about the gay couple. The couple was actually sentenced to hard labor that would last for 14 years. This was after they were convicted on various charges such as unnatural acts and gross indecency.
In a recent interview, Madonna said that she was so shocked when she heard the news. It was just saddening for Madonna to have Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga convicted just because the two had their engagement ceremony in Malawi. The two were arrested last December 2009.
In Malawi, being a part of the homosexual community is considered illegal. Malawi is a country in Africa where Madonna adopted Mercy and David, two of the icon’s children.
Reuters reported that the press secretary of Barack Obama gave a statement regarding the issue. Robert Gibbs said that America strongly condemns harsh sentencing as well as conviction. At the same time, the commonwealth office of Britain expressed their aggravation with the matter as well. They said that Britain was deeply dismayed with the Malawian court’s decision to jail Chimbalanga and Monjeza. Their statement can be read at the Irish Times.
