Check out the new portraits of First Lady Michelle Obama and Domestic Goddess Martha Stewart that are currently on display at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.
Martha Stewart and Michelle Obama are getting space in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington for the first time.
It’s all part of a new exhibit, “Americans Now,” which features images of some of the most famous names in science, business, government, and the arts.
It’s the first time Miss Obama’s individual portrait has been shown at the gallery. The 2008 screenprint — which portrays Michelle in Andy Warhol–esque pop colors — was created by New York–based artist Mickalene Thomas, who is known best for her Blaxploitation-meets–art canon portraits of strong black women.
Other familiar names in the collection include actor Tom Hanks and music artists Willie Nelson and LL Cool J. Video portraits in the exhibit feature late-night comedians Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien and David Letterman, actor George Clooney, and NBA star LeBron James.
The exhibit opened Friday and will remain on display through June 19, 2011.
