The more things change, the more they stay the same: Socialite Paris Hilton was arrested late Friday in Las Vegas for possession of cocaine, a Sin City police spokesperson confirmed to PEOPLE.com on Saturday.

The heiress — who was detained in Africa earlier this year after she was caught in possession of marijuana during the 2010 World Cup — was booked into Clark County Detention Centre early this morning on a charge of possession of cocaine. Police Watch commander lieutenant Wayne Holman confirms that Hilton was detained at around 2.30 AM local time.

The hotel heiress was a passenger in a Black Escalade that was stopped by police outside Las Vegas’ Wynn Hotel. It was stopped when officers saw what they thought was marijuana smoke coming from the car. The driver — Paris’ 34-year-old beau Cy Watts — was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs. During the search officers found what appeared to be a controlled substance on Hilton. Further investigation confirmed that the substance was cocaine, police say.

Paris posted bail and has since been released from custody.

“I am gathering facts, but I caution people not to rush to judgment,” her attorney, David Chesnoff, told The Associated Press in a brief telephone interview Saturday morning.

The arrest came just days after a burglary attempt was made on Hilton’s Los Angeles home. Nathan Lee Parada, 31, faces a felony burglary charge for the Tuesday incident in which he showed up at Hilton’s enclave carrying two big knives and banging on windows.

In 2007, the ex-reality TV star spent 23 days in jail for driving under the influence of alcohol. After her prison term, Hilton told CNN’s Larry King that the experience caused her to re-evaluate her party girl lifestyle. She said she wanted “to help raise money for kids and for breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.”
