Special Investigation Team chief R K Raghavan has said that he is confident of submitting his report to the Supreme Court on or before 30th April.

In a statement, Raghavan said Narendra Modi’s deposition is a “very big step forward” to unravel Gulbarg society case.

The SIT was set up by the Supreme Court to probe the role of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others on their alleged role in the Gulbarg Society riot case.

Earlier, the Special Investigation Team (SIT), appointed by supreme court to probe into the communal riots of 2002 in Gujarat, questioned Chief Minister Narendra Modi in two sessions that lasted more than nine hours.

The controversial BJP leader, who faces allegations of omission and commission with regard to the mob attack on a housing society in which a former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri and 68 others were killed, drove to the SIT office in the heart of Gandhinagar where he was questioned in two sessions lasting for 9 hours by a team of officers headed by A K Malhotra, a former CBI DIG.

Though there was no official word on the questioning, Modi is said to have replied to 62 of the 68 questions put to him in the first session.

Meanwhile, Zakia Jaffrey, petitioner and widow of Ehsan Jaffrey, who was allegedly burnt alive during the 2002 communal riots, expressed joy and saw a ray of hope for justice with the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi deposing before a court.

Congress has slammed Narendra Modi saying his appearance before investigators probing 2002 riots has brought “ill-repute” to the high office he holds.

Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said it was unprecedented that a person occupying a Constitutional position, that too of the Chief Minister, has been summoned for investigation in a case of mass murder.

BJP however dismissed the allegations, and said it was not an embarrassment for the party.

BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said Modi’s appearance was a reflection of his respect for the institution set up by the Supreme Court.
