Right, so I was talking about the rumored “call to phone” feature inside Gmail in the new Gmail features article published just 4 hours back, and Gmail has already announced on their blog that they are rolling out the call phones from Gmail feature for users in the US.
You would require the Google voice and video chat plugin in order to make the calls. You can call phone numbers in the US and Canada for free for the rest of the year, and also call international numbers at low rates. You can check the international calling rates on this page.
Receive Calls Inside Gmail Too
Yes, if you are a Google Voice user, you can not only call telephone numbers from the Gmail interface, you could receive calls too. Here are the steps you need to take to receive calls in Gmail.
- Make at least one outbound call from Gmail.
- In Google Voice, navigate to Voice settings under the Settings link.
- In the Phones tab, click the check box next to Google Chat.

Another great new feature, except that it is unlikely to be available to Gmail users outside the US anytime soon because Google Voice itself is limited to US. We can only hope it happens soon enough for every Gmail user around the world.
