This month, Google upgraded its internet browser – Chrome, to v. 6. There are a few key changes in Chrome with this version as compared to v. 5:
- The ‘go’ button (triangle/arrow formerly right of address bar) is removed, users now have to hit ‘enter’ when the bar is active to go to an address entered.
- The ‘reload’ and ‘stop’ buttons are now merged and to the left of the address bar. The reload curved arrow will appear when a page is fully loaded and the stop ‘X’ will only appear when the page is still loading.
- The address bar (‘omnibar’) has been extended and displays suggested results as you type with a globe, magnifying glass, or star to denote websites, search results, or favourites, respectively (to shrink the bar, hover your mouse pointer over the far right end of it to get a double-headed arrow that allows re-sizing).
- The bookmarks icon (star) is moved to the far right end of the address bar.
- “http://” is no longer shown in web addresses.
- The toolbar has a new colour scheme (although you can change this using themes).
- The ‘page’ icon is gone and functions formerly under it such as find, print, cut, paste, copy, etc. are now under the ‘Customize and control Google Chrome’ icon (wrench). – Incidentally, the wrench is now pointing the other way.
- A ‘Zoom’ function is also under the wrench icon.
- Chrome v.6 beats v.5 and other competitors Opera, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Firefox, in Javascript speed and other contests (e.g. v.6 is about 15% faster than v. 5).
These are basically the main changes in Chrome v. 6. There are also a few minor changes to how ‘Tools’, pinning tabs, and a couple of other functions are used. The jury is still out on how Chrome fans are adjusting to the new changes.
