Communication Design posts full-year net profit of $1 million, reversing losses

Catalist-listed Communication Design International announced today net profit attributable to shareholders of $1 million for the year ended 30 June 2010 (FY2010), reversing a loss of $3.8 million in FY2009, after it wound up a non-performing unit, cut costs and sharpened its business focus.

The international marketing and communications specialist said the strong turnaround in full year performance was achieved despite a 10.4% fall in FY2010 revenue to $30.7 million mainly due to a major customer discontinuing orders and the absence of new sales from UK-based Above Consultancy which it began winding up in June 2009.

STI drops 1% to 2,921.34 at the break

Singapore’s Straits Times Index dropped 1% to 2,921.34 as of the 12:30 p.m. trading break. Six stocks declined for each that rose on the 30-member gauge.

Shares on the measure traded at 14.1 times estimated earnings, compared with about 17.4 times at the beginning of the year, according to Bloomberg data. The following shares were among the most active in the market.

SingTel off 1%; FY11 results likely muted: CIMB

SingTel (Z74.SG) off 1% at $3.03 as prospect of reduced earnings in coming quarters takes toll after telco flags potentially lower contributions from key associates, according to Dow Jones.

“The (fiscal 1Q11) results reinforce our view that SingTel’s performance this year will be muted,” says CIMB, which has Underperform call with $3.00 target.

June-quarter net profit down 0.2% on year at $943 million as stronger performances by Singapore, Australia operations offset by lower contributions from associates due to increased competition, fair value losses on FX liabilities.

Morgan Stanley, which has Equalweight call with $3.30 target, says results 4%-5% below consensus estimates. Immediate support at $3.00, last breached June 30.

Parkway shares rise 1% on Khazanah’s improved bid

Shares of Singapore’s Parkway (PARM.SI) opened 1.03% higher on Tuesday after Malaysian state investor Khazanah made an improved offer for the regional healthcare provider.

Around 0102 GMT, Parkway was traded at $3.92, higher than its Friday closing price of $3.88. Parkway shares were suspended from trading on Monday.

Singapore’s benchmark Straits Times Index rose 0.18% on Wednesday to 2,835.51 points.

Singapore stocks may fall on Thursday after US shares extended their losses overnight, as investors stayed on the sidelines amid conflicting economic data. US private sector employment rose by a paltry amount in June, underscoring concerns about a weak labour market.

Mapletree Investments, a real-estate firm wholly-owned by Singapore state investor Temasek (TEM.UL), said today it hopes to raise $1 billion from an industrial REIT initial public offering. The industrial REIT portfolio will contain only Singapore properties and initially have a value of $1.7 billion.

Google’s U.S. Search Share Increases Almost 1%, Says Hitwise

Google grabbed 72.17 percent of U.S. search market in May, up from 71.4 percent in April for almost a 1 percent gain, HitWise said June 21. Yahoo dropped from 14.96 percent in April to 14.43 percent in May; Bing fell from 9.43 percent the prior month to 9.23 percent. The numbers stand out against the May search statistics from comScore, which used two data sets. Orchard Road flooded by ‘intense’ rains: Update 1

Heavy rain in Singapore caused flash floods in some parts of the island including the shopping district of Orchard Road, damaging stores and forcing firefighters to rescue people from stranded vehicles.

Almost 100 millimeters of rain fell from around 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. today, more than 60% of the average monthly rainfall for June, Singapore’s national water agency said in a statement on its website today. Flood waters in the Orchard Road area reached 300 millimeters after an “intense storm”, and subsided within one hour, the agency said.
