STI off 1.3%; 3,090 worst case consolidation – DBS Vickers

The STI is down 1.3% at 3188.45, in line with regional markets’ weakness as worries over the unrest in Egypt cap demand for equities. Volume is light at 863 million shares worth $1.01 billion, with over four decliners per gainer on the broad market.

DBS Vickers says it expects investors “to shy off stocks this week on news of the worsening unrest in Egypt over the weekend, equity markets’ negative reaction to that unrest and this being a holiday-shortened week.”

STI drops 1.3% to 3,188.57 at trading break

Singapore’s Straits Times Index dropped 1.3% to 3,188.57 at the 12:30 p.m. trading break, trimming this month’s advance to 0.1%. All but two stocks in the benchmark index of 30 companies fell.

Shares on the measure trade at an average 14.6 times estimated earnings, compared with about 15.6 times at the end of 2010, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The following shares were among the most active in the market.

STI gains 1.3% to 3,220.78 at closing

Singapore’s Straits Times Index gained 1.3% to 3,220.78 at the close, its biggest advance since Jan. 3. Five stocks rose for each that fell in the benchmark index of 30 companies.

Shares on the measure trade at an average 14.7 times estimated earnings, compared with about 15.6 times at the end of 2010, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The following shares were among the most active in the market.

Singapore shares may rise on Thursday, tracking gains in U.S. markets overnight as a successful bond auction by Portugal eased investors’ fears about the euro zone debt crisis.

Singapore’s benchmark Straits Times Index <.FTSTI> gained 0.11% on Wednesday to 3,244.94 points.

Ezra Holdings (EZRA SP): The provider of logistics services to the oil and gas industry said first-quarter profit declined 28% to $13.3 million from a year ago. Ezra gained 0.6% to $1.81.

Kim Eng rises 13% on Maybank’s takeover bid

Shares of Singapore’s Kim Eng Holdings (KEHS.SI) opened 13% higher on Friday after Malaysia’s largest lender Maybank (MBBM.KL) offered to buy the stockbroker for US$1.4 billion ($1.8 billion).

Around 9:02 a.m., Kim Eng shares were traded at $3.05, below Maybank’s offer price of $3.10 a share but well above its last traded price of $2.70.

Maybank said on Thursday that it has already agreed to buy a 44.6% stake in Kim Eng from two major shareholders.

Skype, NYSE Error Top List of 13 Big Programming Failures of 2010

As in most any year in the modern age, 2010 saw its share of problems due to programming errors, bugs and other shortcomings. A timing error with the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) systems, a Skype crash, problems with Chase online banking, faulty automobile systems at Toyota and privacy breaches were among the years big-name software problems that might have been avoided at the programming level. For instance, the Skype outage, which affected a large number of Skype’s 560 million users, resulted from a bug in the Windows version of the software. In a blog post, Lars Rabbe, CIO at Skype, said the company needed to enhance its capability for testing for and detecting bugs. "While our Windows v5 software release was subject to extensive internal testing and months of Beta testing with hundreds of thousands of users, we will be reviewing our testing processes to determine better ways of detecting and avoiding bugs which could affect the system," Rabbe said in his post. Software application defects are inevitable, but developers have a better chance of catching them if they use enhanced debugging and code analysis platforms and employ Agile methods. In addition, companies such as Replay Solutions, Coverity, Corensic and others offer software to help developers detect and resolve programming issues during the development lifecycle. – …

Shui on Land said to meet credit investors starting Dec. 13

Shui On Land plans to meet credit investors in Singapore and Hong Kong starting from Dec. 13, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The real estate company hired Deutsche Bank AG, Standard Chartered Plc and UBS AG to help arrange the meetings, the person said, asking not to be identified as details are private. Croatia: 13 Serb victims identified

The Serbian Government’s Missing Persons Committee has announced that remains of 13 Serbs who were killed in the 1991-1995 war in Croatia have been identified.

The victims were exhumed in the towns of Petrinja, Dvor, Vukovar, Osijek, Kukunjevci and other locations, and the identification procedure was conducted at the Department of Forensic Medicine and Criminology of the Zagreb School of Medicine.

Singapore October bank lending up 1.3% from September

Total bank lending in Singapore rose 1.3% to $313.3 billion in October from $309.4 billion in September, central bank data showed on Tuesday.
