PESHAWAR – At least 13 persons including a former Taliban sympathiser turned anti-militant nazim of union council Adezai, Abdul Malik, were killed and 43 others got injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up near busy livestock market here at Mathani area on Sunday morning.
Police sources and eyewitnesses informed that the suicide bomber was 18 to 20 years old and his actual target was UC Nazim Abdul Malik. The attacker detonated 12 kilograms of explosives close to the market, littering the road with corpses and twisted metal from ruined vehicles, they said. The intensity of the blast was so severe that seven vehicles were destroyed completely while windowpanes of nearby buildings and vehicles were smashed.
Soon after the blast, the rescue teams rushed towards the site and cordoned off the area. All the injured were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital. The condition of nine persons was stated to be critical.
The deceased included Haji Abdul Malik, Noorullah, Ali Ahmad, Noorul Islam, Aziz Khan, five-year-old Noreen, Rahim Shah, Inzamam, Noor Mohammad, Razi Mohammad, Noorud Din, Rasheed Khan and Awwal Khan.
It is worth mentioning here that Abdul Malik was targeted twice in the recent past. Earlier, unknown miscreants attached explosive device with his vehicle at Mathani area, while, in another attempt, his house was targeted with rockets in which his nephew and other family members got injured.
SSP (Operations) Muhammad Karim Khan while talking to media persons confirmed that it was a suicide attack and its actual target was Abdul Malik who formed a lashkar against militants in the recent past. He said Abdul Malik was attacked at Adezai Chowk on Peshawar-Kohat Road as soon as he came out of his car. Resultantly, he sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the hospital, however he succumbed to his critical injuries before receiving any treatment, he added.
Agencies add: Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was to avenge UC Nazim Abdul MalikÂ’s efforts to raise a militia to fight them.
A doctor at Lady Reading Hospital said that 13 people were killed and 36 wounded in the attack. Hospital officials said that two children were among the dead.
Malik once had close links to the hardline Taliban movement, but switched sides in 2008 and had raised a local force to battle the extremists on the fringes of the city. The nazim had in the past survived a number of attempts on his life by his former allies, who are battling government. “We accept the responsibility for the Peshawar suicide attack,” TTP spokesman Azam Tariq told AFP by phone from an undisclosed location.
“Abdul Malik has met his fate, and if anybody else dares raise a lashkar (militia) against us, he will be dealt (with) in the same manner.”
Mahabat Khan, a 50-year-old livestock dealer, said he had just sold a buffalo and was talking to the buyer when he was knocked to the ground. “It was a huge blast near us and my foot was injured,” Khan told AFP from his hospital bed. “I heard gunshots after the blast.”
Meanwhile, the funeral of nazim Abdul Malik was held at his native village on Sunday afternoon. A large number of people including union council nazims, naib nazims, councillors and elite of the area attended the funeral. Later, he was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard amid sobs and tears.
Pakistan has been hit by a wave of blasts and attacks killing more than 350 people since early October. In the deadliest attack in two years, a car bombing killed 118 people on October 28 in Peshawar.
Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, NWFP Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani, Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti and NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain strongly condemned the suicide attack and death of UC Nazim. They expressed deep sorrow over the casualties and prayed Allah Almighty to shower his blessings on the departed souls. They also directed best possible medical treatment for the injured.
They termed the attack as barbaric and said the government would continue efforts to wipe out extremists and terrorists from the country. Both President Zardari and PM Gilani expressed their resolve not to be deterred by acts of violence. The President sought a report into the incident while the Prime Minister ordered an enquiry.
