Opeth: 20th Anniversary Tour

PREEMINENT PROGRESSIVE METAL BAND HITS TWO DECADES!

Mikael Ã…kerfeldt by Olle Carlsson

Sweden’s Opeth, one of the most revered and respected bands in the metal scene and beyond for the past two decades, will commemorate their twentieth anniversary in the of Spring 2010 with six exclusive shows that will take place across the globe in various international locales such as Stockholm, Sweden; Essen, Germany; Paris, France; London, UK; New York City, NY; and Los Angeles, CA.

“I can’t believe it, but…fuck, we’re celebrating 20 years. I’ve been in this band ever since I was 16. It’s insane,” says frontman Mikael Ã…kerfeldt. “As far as I remember, we’ve never had a release party, never celebrated anything officially. Well, now is the time, you hear? We’ve set up a string of shows, six of them actually, around the world. To say that they will be super-exclusive is beyond an understatement. We’ve discussed the set list already and it seems like we’ll pull out a few songs we’ve never played before, some of which fans all over the world have been demanding to hear for years and years. Our main agenda for these shows is to have ‘fun’ whilst trying to blow your fucking minds. You could say business as usual, but really, it’ll be special. I can’t stress enough how exclusive this will be. We will not add any more shows on top of the six that we’ve confirmed already, so please make up your mind early on whether you want to go or not – of course you fucking do- as I would assume there’s quite a few of our fans that might be interested in seeing a thing like this.”

Akerfeldt said the band will spend the better part of January through March rehearsing for this special series of shows. “All to make you fucking happy! Okay, we’ll be tight, very tight indeed. Come see us. It’s a celebration.”

At each show, the band will perform two sets. The first set will feature the band playing its breakthrough epic Blackwater Park in its entirety. The second set will consist of mixed material from the band’s extensive catalog. The band will be playing for over two hours at carefully selected venues in order to achieve an element of intimacy and exclusivity, and an overall “You had to be there” vibe!

The venues include the famed and prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London, as well as the luxurious Lichtburg in Essen, the oldest fully seated cinema in Germany.

The band will offer exclusive VIP ticket packages to all shows, which include a laminated VIP pass exclusive to each show, access to sound check, a meet ‘n’ greet with Opeth, a t-shirt exclusive to that particular show, a signed tour program and a special edition CD/DVD of Blackwater Park, with a 5.1 mix and a 30-minute, never-before-seen documentary all nicely packaged in a hard cover digipack designed by artist Travis Smith. The special edition will be released in March 2010 through Sony Music. All the Opeth loot will be included in an Opeth rucksack. The VIP laminate will also allow early access to venues without seat allocation so that VIP’s can get the best seats in the house.

Opeth 20th Anniversary Tour Dates

March 30 – Cirkus – Stockholm, Sweden
April 1 – Lichtburg – Essen, Germany
April 3 – Bataclan – Paris, France
April 5 – Royal Albert Hall – London, UK
April 7 – Terminal 5 – New York, NY

Nirvana: Bleach: 20th Anniversary Edition/Live at Reading

By: Ron Hart

It’s too easy to become jaded with Nirvana, especially if you went to high school or college during the short period they ruled the world in the early 1990s. The rampant manufacturing of Kurt Cobain‘s image and legacy by mainstream America has been nauseatingly on par with that of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison (all of whom also died at the age of 27Â…yes, yes we all know). And when combined with that tabloid documentary from a few years back, the controversial public spats over the band’s catalog and vault material between the widow Courtney Love and surviving band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, and what seems like the ultimate nail in the coffin, that dreadful Kurt-like avatar singing songs by third-rate Nirvana clones Bush and, God help us, Bon Jovi, in Guitar Hero 5, listening to the band is harder to stomach than ever.

Thankfully, there are two new reissues on the market that will remind the skeptics just how awesome Nirvana was before everything went to shit. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Sub Pop delivers a stunning Deluxe Edition (released November 3) of the Aberdeen, Washington trio’s enigmatic debut, Bleach. Remastered from the original master tapes by the album’s producer, the great Seattle soundsmith Jack Endino, the album sounds louder, crisper, and cleaner than it ever has. And longer, too, as a previously unreleased live soundboard-quality recording of a complete February 9th, 1990 show at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon is added onto the disc, featuring downright slaying renditions of such Bleach highlights as “Blew,” “About a Girl,” “Floyd the Barber,” and “Negative Creep,” as well as covers of such band faves as Shocking Blue’s “Love Buzz” and The Vaselines’ “Molly’s Lips.” Not to mention, it looks a whole lot better as well, repackaged in a heavy cardboard digipak containing a 16-page booklet that features a slew of never-before-seen photos of the group with original drummer Chad Channing behind the kit.

Also in stores is the official release of Nirvana’s legendary appearance at the 1992 Reading Festival (released November 3 on Geffen), available as a twin DVD/CD package. Once a highly sought-after bootleg long and considered by some to be the quintessential snapshot of the band at the peak of their powers and popularity, this blistering set does not disappoint in the least. Ripping through 25 songs in a hair under 80 minutes (the CD strangely omits “Love Buzz” for unknown reasons), including most of Nevermind, a giant chunk of Bleach, early rips through In Utero staples “All Apologies” and “Dumb,” rare gems like “Aneurysm” and “Been A Son,” and covers of The Wipers’ “D-7″ and Mudhoney’s “The Money Will Roll Right In,” this is the only live Nirvana outside of the MTV Unplugged album you will ever need. Hearing Kurt sound so alive and joyful, basking in the glow of the birth of his daughter Frances Bean just 12 days prior this set (evident in his introductory giggles before kicking into “Sliver” and the awe he vocally projects upon hearing the English crowd sing the lyrics to “Lithium” back to him) is both heartwarming and heartbreaking all at once. For the full effect of the concert, however, you need to watch the DVD, complete with Cobain’s hilarious stage entrance that completely mocked the rumors in the British tabloids announcing that Nirvana was canceling their headlining set at Reading on account of the singer going on a weekend-long drug binge. Seeing Kurt being wheeled out by journalist Everett True and attempting to cover Bette Midler’s “The Rose” before parting the waves of the sold-out festival crowd with a ferocious rendition of “Breed” will remind even the most cynical ex-fan why Nevermind was in heavy rotation on most stereos back in the day.

Lenny Kravitz:Let Love Rule: 20th Anniversary Edition

By: Ron Hart

“Too black for rock radio, too white for urban radio” was the albatross around the neck of Lenny Kravitz when he first burst onto the scene with his soulful voice and hippie wardrobe back in 1989. However, by refusing to fall in line with the demographics and blaze his own unique path of biracial sonic bliss, the son of late sitcom star Roxie Roker found the world catching up with his John Lennon-cum-Prince style in the 1990s, rendering him one of the most popular acts in the world with both rock and R&B fans for the last two decades. Time has been good to Let Love Rule, Kravitz’s moderately popular debut originally released in September of ’89. And the album’s flowery fusion of funk, rock and soul vibes has never sounded better as they do on EMI’s 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition. In addition to a beautiful remastering job, this two-disc set adds some home demos of such key album cuts as the hit title tune and “Mr. Cab Driver” and an exceptional live radio broadcast from 1990. Let Love Rule remains high amongst Kravitz’s finest works, even 20 years later, especially that amazing title track, which really starts to cook once a young Karl Denson kicks out the finest sax solo of 1989.
