Weekend Comment Jan 28: SIA disappoints

WITH GLOBAL ECONOMIC growth expected to level off and inflation a mounting concern, Singapore Airlines appears to be facing potential headwinds that could disrupt its flight to recovery in the coming quarters.

The full-service carrier reported a disappointing set of third quarter results after the market closed on Jan 28, falling short of the average profit estimates of analysts tracked by Bloomberg. For the three months ending Dec 31, SIA posted a 29% y-o-y fall in net income to $288.3 million, after it booked charges of as much as $199 million relating to antitrust cargo fines.

The following companies may have unusual price changes in Singapore trading. Stock symbols are in parentheses, and share prices are from the previous close. Singapore’s Straits Times Index was little changed at 3,219.83.

CapitaLand (CAPL SP): Southeast Asia’s biggest developer said it has agreed to buy a residential property in eastern Singapore for $100.7 million . The property will be redeveloped into a condominium with 150 units, comprising of one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. CapitaLand slipped 1.1% to $3.65.

Swiber off 2.8%; Better earnings ahead: Analysts

Swiber (AK3.SG) off 2.8% at $1.05 as weaker 3Q10 results take toll; net profit down 51.8% on year, down 49.4% on quarter, at US$7.0 million ($9 million) on higher operating costs, lower gains from asset sales, reduced contributions from associates, according to Dow Jones.

Adobe Shockwave Player Patch Coming Oct. 28

Adobe is prepping a patch for a security bug in Shockwave Player that is now under attack. – Adobe Systems is planning to patch a critical vulnerability Oct. 28 in
response to the appearance of attacks.
Adobe originally issued

Qian Hu posts 28% fall in 3Q net profit to $1.2m

Mainboard-listed integrated ornamental fish service provider Qian Hu Corporation today reported lower net profit attributable to shareholders for the third quarter ended 30 September, which fell 27.9% to $1.2 million, compared to the second quarter of the preceding year. Revenue fell 3.9% to $22.95 million.

Qian Hu blames the fall in revenue to the “triple whammy effects” of Icelandic volcanic ash over European airspace from April to May this year; the FIFA World Cup which dampened demand for ornamental fish and accessories exports, and drought conditions in Malaysia which affected the production of Dragon Fish fry announced in the previous quarter.

Keppel Land target raised by 28% by JPMorgan; Keeps at Neutral

JPMorgan raises Keppel Land (K17.SG) target price to $4.70 vs $3.65, incorporates higher underlying property valuation assumptions, raises end-Dec 2011E RNAV by 28% to $6.12/share vs $4.85/share, according to Dow Jones.

JPMorgan says upgrades prompted by impact of group’s proposed asset swap with 45.4%-owned K-REIT Asia (K71U.SG). But retains Neutral rating “as we see few incremental catalysts for outperformance, especially when there are now more alternatives at either end of the risk spectrum for exposure to the Singapore office sector.”

iPad Coming to AT&T Stores on October 28

AT&T and Apple today announced that all three iPad Wi-Fi + 3G models will be available at more than 2,200 AT&T Stores starting Thursday, October 28. AT&T will offer customers 3G pre-paid data plans for iPad, complete with Apple’s easy on-device activation and management. All iPad data plans are available without a term contract and include unlimited access to AT&T’s more than 23,000 domestic Wi-Fi Hot Spots.

Verizon Wireless Offers iPad at Stores Nationwide on October 28

Verizon Wireless and Apple today announced that iPad will be available at over 2,000 Verizon Wireless Stores nationwide beginning Thursday, October 28. Verizon Wireless will offer three bundles — all featuring an iPad Wi-Fi model and a Verizon MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot — for a suggested retail price of $629.99 for a 16GB iPad with Wi-Fi and MiFi, $729.99 for a 32GB iPad with Wi-Fi and MiFi, and $829.99 for a 64GB iPad with Wi-Fi and MiFi. Verizon Wireless is offering a monthly access plan to iPad customers of up to 1GB of data for just $20 a month. Verizon Wireless will also offer all three iPad Wi-Fi models on a stand-alone basis.
