Google built on the buzz swirling around its forthcoming Android 3.0 operating system for tablets during an event showcasing the Honeycomb platform tailored for tablets. After a brief introduction at the Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif., Android lead Andy Rubin passed the torch to Hugo Barra, product management director for Android, and Chris Yerga, Android engineering director for cloud services. Barra whizzed through an array of demos using Motorola’s soon-to-be-launched (as in late February, early March) Xoom tablet, showing off multitasking, widgets, application bars and several other perks that were introduced to developers via the Android 3.0 preview SDK last week. Yerga then relieved Barra to show off Google’s new Android Market Website, a destination that will allow consumers to purchase applications, games and music on Android smartphones and tablets. Google Jan. 26 trotted out a key piece of its Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" puzzle in the form of a preview SDK based on the new operating system intended for larger touch-screen tablet computers. Honeycomb offers users a new holographic user interface that focuses on multitasking, notifications, widgets and other features to make devices easy and fun to use. Motorola Xoom Tablet Demo Powered by Android 3.0 Seen at CES
Las Vegas-Verizon’s keynote address for the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show Jan. 6 provided the playground for a sweet demonstration of Motorola’s forthcoming Xoom tablet, the Android 3.0 device with a 10.1-inch screen and dual-core processor. The Xoom, which will launch on Verizon Wireless’ network in February, will be 4G-ready when the carrier is ready to expand its 4G LTE coverage beyond its current 38 markets. Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg and Verizon President Lowell McAdam chatted a lot about 4G and its capability to bring data, apps and content to consumers across the country in the next few years. But the Xoom stole the show. Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha whipped his out and invited Google Android product manager Mike Cleron up for a fine demo of the Xoom’s 3D capabilities. ST Engineering’s electronics arm acquires remaining 30% equity stake in PM-B
ST Engineering says ST Electronics (Info-Software Systems) (STEE-InfoSoft) has acquired the remaining 30% equity stake in PM-B from the other existing shareholder, Nicky Ting, for a total cash consideration of $2 million.
With the acquisition, PM-B becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of STEE-InfoSoft, which in turn is a wholly-owned subsidiary of ST Electronics, the electronics arm of ST Engineering.
