Bank of Singapore says yuan may appreciate 6% a year: Update

Investors should buy yuan-denominated assets or open yuan deposit accounts because the Chinese currency may appreciate by as much as 6% a year, according to Bank of Singapore.

“If anything is close to certain it’s that the renminbi will appreciate,” Head of Product Development Marc van de Walle said at a media briefing in Singapore today, using the yuan’s alternative name. “It’s got the potential to appreciate between 4% and 6% annually, and maybe even a bit faster,” he said, without providing a specific time frame.

NOL carries 6% more cargo in 4 weeks to Nov 12

Singapore’s Neptune Orient Lines (NEPS.SI) (NOL), the world’s sixth-largest container shipping firm, carried 6% more containers in the four weeks to Nov 12 compared with a year ago.

NOL said in a statement it shipped the equivalent of 220,800 40-foot containers (FEU) on its vessels in the period, up from 208,000 a year earlier, due mainly to higher volumes carried on the intra-Asia and Asia-Europe trade lanes.

The average revenue in the period from each container was $3,649, up 25% from the year ago period.

Neste Singapore biodiesel plant fully up in 6 months

Finland’s top refiner Neste Oil (NES1V.HE) expects its renewable diesel plant in Singapore to reach full capacity in six months, its chief executive said.

“It is a big refinery and we want to proceed slowly and see how it works and see if there are any bottlenecks,” Matti Lievonen told Reuters in an interview on Friday.

“It will take probably six months before full capacity will be reached. We are scaling up from 70,000 tonnes to 800,000 tonnes (annually),” he said.
