Telepath :: 01.31.10 :: Crystal Bay Club Casino – Red Room :: Lake Tahoe, CA

Telepath

Coming off three solid shows in the San Francisco Bay Area, Telepath showed up to the Crystal Bay Club (CBC) and took the audience for a wild ride. Blending their unique sound full of Middle Eastern, Afrobeat, drum & bass, and dub influences, this three-piece electronica act continues to impress, gaining fans at every stop they make.

Keyboardist Michael Christie set the tone for the evening, sharing that this was the band’s second trip to the CBC and Tahoe, saying, “This place is like nowhere else we play.” The Red Room is great for a band like Telepath. The sound quality is fantastic, and the visuals are enhanced by several psychedelic screens and a shimmering ceiling.

In typical Tahoe fashion, the show began to a sparsely populated room as attendees milled about the casino waiting for the music to start. Wasting no time, Christie, along with bassist Curt Heiny and drummer Mike B, dropped directly into “IPS.” Telepath has clearly gotten tighter as a band since the release of their acclaimed 2008 album, Contact, and their sound seems to have gotten more polished as they continue to tour throughout the U.S.

“IPS” started with a deep bass and driving drumbeat, setting the foundation for the song’s signature soaring keyboards. “IPS” bled into “Subterfuge,” pointing to a trend the audience would be feeling for the rest of the night. While the songs played didn’t necessarily segue into each other in the traditional jam band sense, there was barely a break between pieces.

As the monster set continued every one of the textured sounds Telepath brings to its show were on display. Computer samples coupled with worldly beats created visions of a bazaar in India. Emotion was felt and elicited from the spacey, light sounds of “Realize,” while the intricate improvisation during “Hero” had the whole crowd moving as one collective unit. Another clear highlight came during the deep grooves of “Fela Through,” a brilliant twist of Afrobeat and electronica; it just may have been the jam of the night.

Telepath

While there were times during the show that rhythms and beats sounded like Thievery Corporation, STS9, or Lotus, in the end the music that was produced was nothing but Telepath. A trio that can often sound like six or more people, they blend sitar and guitar sounds with conscious lyrics over a solid keyboard-bass-drum package to create an original offering.

As the 16-song set came to a close, Telepath let loose the “Peaceblaster 68″ remix they did for the STS9 album Make It Right Remixes (JamBase review), a compilation of donated remixes from numerous artists from all over the world to help fund rebuilding in New Orleans. Needless to say, the crowd loved it.

Briefly, everyone seemed to think the night might be over after that bust-out, but Telepath would never leave their rapidly growing fan base hanging. The double encore of “Jadhi” and “Haze-Mirr” closed out another grand evening in Tahoe, with the full moon high overhead and a joyous bunch of heads cruising home after a fabulous night of music.

Vic Chesnutt: R.I.P. 1964 – 2009

VIC CHESNUTT 1964 – 2009

Vic Chesnutt

Singer, songwriter, guitarist Vic
Chesnut
died on Christmas Day, December 25, 2009. According to Twitter reports from Chesnutt’s close friend Kristin Hersh, Chesnutt
slipped into a coma after attempting to commit suicide. He was 45 years old.

Chesnutt had a remarkable career, releasing 16 albums and captivating audiences with countless live shows that
would affect fans in profound ways. He has collaborated with a plethora of artists, perhaps most famously with
Widespread Panic in the
band
Brute. Panic also covered
several of Chesnutt’s songs regularly in concert. Chesnutt has also worked with R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, Lambchop,
Van Dyke Parks, A Silver Mount Zion, and Elf Power.

Vic Chesnutt was confined to a wheelchair since the age of 18 because of injuries suffered in a car accident.

Kristin Hersh has created a website for those who want to help Chesnutt’s family with expenses. To donate, please
go to kristinhersh.cashmusic.org/vic.

The following note is taken from the Constellation Records Website, Chesnutt’s most recent record label.

Surrounded by family and friends, Vic
Chesnut
died in Athens Georgia this afternoon, Friday 25 December at 14:59.

“In the few short years that we knew him personally, Vic transformed our sense of what true character, grace and
determination are all about. Our grief is inexpressible and Vic’s absence unfathomable.”

We will make more information available according to the wishes of Vic’s family and friends.

Don and Ian

Constellation

“The most important story to report now is not Vic’s death but a life and work overflowing with insight, humor, and
yes, resilience. This, after all, was the man who wrote: ‘I thought I had a calling, anyway, I just kept dialing.’ Sixteen
extraordinary albums, five in the last couple of years; countless live shows so powerful and sublime they deeply
altered the lives of those on the stage with Vic and those looking up, yes up, at him. The second most important
story here has to do with a broken health care system depriving so many of the help they need to stay around and
stay sane, and a society that never balks at providing more money for more wars but fights tooth and nail against
decent care for its citizens. Vic’s death, just so you all know, did not come at the end of some cliche downward
spiral. He was battling deep depression but also at the peak of his powers, and with the help of friends and family he
was in the middle of a desperate search for help. The system failed to provide it. I miss him terribly.”

Jem Cohen

Filmmaker/photographer/
North Star Deserter producer

“We have lost one of our great ones. His songs and his story remain.”

Michael Stipe

“I flew around a little room once. A line from Supernatural.
He was just that. He possessed an unearthly energy and
yet was humanistic with the common man in mind. He was
entirely present and entirely somewhere else. A mystical
somewhere else. A child and an old guy as he called himself.
Before he made an album he said he was a bum. Now he
is in flight bumming round beyond the little room. With his
angel voice.”

Patti Smith

“In 1991 I moved to Athens Georgia in search of god, but what I discovered instead was Vic Chesnutt. Hearing his
music completely transformed the way I thought about writing songs, and I will forever be in his debt.”

Jeff Mangum

Neutral Milk Hotel

“Years ago upon discovery, West of Rome consoled me when I was going under. A life saver with the
straight story. I followed since then from a distance. Vic was a unique being, mind, voice. No one spoke or made
music like that, with that particular timbre, vocabulary and perception. Fierce and direct or levitated, whimsical and
ornamental, he always cut to the bone. And past that, to the soul. It’s a shame. A national tragedy, when you look at
the issues being faced.”

Film curator, New York Film Festival

    Wilco | 06.27.09 | Berkeley

Words by: Kayceman | Images by: Casey Flanigan

    Wilco :: 06.27.09 :: Greek Theatre :: Berkeley, CA

    Wilco :: 06.27 :: Berkeley, CA

Because we still love rock & roll, that’s why we love Wilco. 15 years of Midwest workingman’s charm and Jeff Tweedy‘s relentless pursuit of songcraft have given us a wealth of pure, deep-hearted, true blue American rock & roll. And on a gorgeous Northern California night at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, a very sold out house gave witness to one of the most consistently impressive bands out there.

Over a marathon 24-song show they touched on all seven of their albums with a bit more emphasis being put on the more recent work. They performed like a band that’s confident, happy and very well rehearsed. But, that’s not to say the show was without surprises. Just because you can depend on Wilco doesn’t mean they won’t throw curveballs your way – in fact, that’s a big reason why you can always count on this six-piece to deliver. It’s all about dynamics and exposing their dualities. The songs are built on Tweedy’s nuanced songwriting, which burrows deep into our experiences, often fixated on relationships, or lack there of, but from these foundations are explosions of noise most often led by gifted guitarist Nels Cline. It’s rock solid songwriting with expansive instrumental searching and at times hugely psychedelic sheets of sound.

Just as they have for the majority of this tour, Wilco began with “Wilco (The Song)” – the first song from their recent release Wilco (The Album) – and not three minutes into the show Cline was on his knees pushing his guitar into the speaker stack, wrestling with the feedback. That set the tone and things didn’t let up as “Muzzle Of Bees” built around a patient mid-tempo section with Tweedy’s acoustic guitar layered brilliantly under Cline’s constant metallic burn. There was a bit of Crazy Horse in the big crunchy hook of “At Least That’s What You Said” and stand out new track “Bull Black Nova” was full of paranoid tension and devastatingly dissonant guitar swells. And to not make mention of drummer Glenn Kotche would be criminal. The guy is amazing, one of the best drummers in the game (and a stellar composer as well), and he showed equal ability slamming the heavy parts as he did executing the delicate accents.

    Jeff Tweedy – Wilco :: 06.27 :: Berkeley, CA

When Tweedy addressed the crowd, as he did on a number of occasions, even slowing the show way down to ask one dazed fan if he was all right, you could see both sides of the man. He’s the leader of one of the biggest bands of the day and he’s been doing it for two decades (pre-Wilco with Uncle Tupelo), but he’s still nervous, or at least not fully comfortable in the role. Tweedy is more at peace than ever these days and he’s repeatedly praised the affects such stability and lack of dependency have had on his work. He’s a proud father and good husband, dedicating the final song before the encore, “I’m The Man That Loves You,” to his wife and bringing his son Spencer on stage decked out in bright tie-dye, laughing, “See what you’ve done to my son, hippies!” before telling the teenager, “Go take a bath.” But where borderline sappy moments like this could very easily take away from the show, they rarely do (and the tie-dye thing was actually really funny). Even though I’ve heard the same banter at various different shows and just because they pull from the same general pool of songs for most of a tour it never comes off like a shtick. It always feels genuine, even if it’s been said before, and it always feels fresh and inspired even if I heard “Jesus, Etc.,” “Impossible Germany” or “Handshake Drugs” last time as well.

Always aware of the need to finish big, Wilco brought the night to a close with a five song encore that found Cline on the double-neck guitar for “You Never Know” before delivering a haunting “Misunderstood” and a sprawling “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” that got downright demented before erupting into a full crowd clap-along ending that fell right into “Hoodoo Voodoo.” It was a generous cap to a very strong show.

Strolling back down the hill through the beautiful UC Berkeley campus under a picture perfect sky and still softly aglow from the experience, I was brought back to the mid-point of Wilco’s set. Tweedy stepped into the light and before “California Stars” he stared out over his adoring mass of fans and proclaimed, “I think this is our favorite place to play,” and judging by the roar of the crowd it was easy to see why.
