Nirvana: Bleach: 20th Anniversary Edition/Live at Reading

By: Ron Hart

It’s too easy to become jaded with Nirvana, especially if you went to high school or college during the short period they ruled the world in the early 1990s. The rampant manufacturing of Kurt Cobain‘s image and legacy by mainstream America has been nauseatingly on par with that of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison (all of whom also died at the age of 27Â…yes, yes we all know). And when combined with that tabloid documentary from a few years back, the controversial public spats over the band’s catalog and vault material between the widow Courtney Love and surviving band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, and what seems like the ultimate nail in the coffin, that dreadful Kurt-like avatar singing songs by third-rate Nirvana clones Bush and, God help us, Bon Jovi, in Guitar Hero 5, listening to the band is harder to stomach than ever.

Thankfully, there are two new reissues on the market that will remind the skeptics just how awesome Nirvana was before everything went to shit. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Sub Pop delivers a stunning Deluxe Edition (released November 3) of the Aberdeen, Washington trio’s enigmatic debut, Bleach. Remastered from the original master tapes by the album’s producer, the great Seattle soundsmith Jack Endino, the album sounds louder, crisper, and cleaner than it ever has. And longer, too, as a previously unreleased live soundboard-quality recording of a complete February 9th, 1990 show at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon is added onto the disc, featuring downright slaying renditions of such Bleach highlights as “Blew,” “About a Girl,” “Floyd the Barber,” and “Negative Creep,” as well as covers of such band faves as Shocking Blue’s “Love Buzz” and The Vaselines’ “Molly’s Lips.” Not to mention, it looks a whole lot better as well, repackaged in a heavy cardboard digipak containing a 16-page booklet that features a slew of never-before-seen photos of the group with original drummer Chad Channing behind the kit.

Also in stores is the official release of Nirvana’s legendary appearance at the 1992 Reading Festival (released November 3 on Geffen), available as a twin DVD/CD package. Once a highly sought-after bootleg long and considered by some to be the quintessential snapshot of the band at the peak of their powers and popularity, this blistering set does not disappoint in the least. Ripping through 25 songs in a hair under 80 minutes (the CD strangely omits “Love Buzz” for unknown reasons), including most of Nevermind, a giant chunk of Bleach, early rips through In Utero staples “All Apologies” and “Dumb,” rare gems like “Aneurysm” and “Been A Son,” and covers of The Wipers’ “D-7″ and Mudhoney’s “The Money Will Roll Right In,” this is the only live Nirvana outside of the MTV Unplugged album you will ever need. Hearing Kurt sound so alive and joyful, basking in the glow of the birth of his daughter Frances Bean just 12 days prior this set (evident in his introductory giggles before kicking into “Sliver” and the awe he vocally projects upon hearing the English crowd sing the lyrics to “Lithium” back to him) is both heartwarming and heartbreaking all at once. For the full effect of the concert, however, you need to watch the DVD, complete with Cobain’s hilarious stage entrance that completely mocked the rumors in the British tabloids announcing that Nirvana was canceling their headlining set at Reading on account of the singer going on a weekend-long drug binge. Seeing Kurt being wheeled out by journalist Everett True and attempting to cover Bette Midler’s “The Rose” before parting the waves of the sold-out festival crowd with a ferocious rendition of “Breed” will remind even the most cynical ex-fan why Nevermind was in heavy rotation on most stereos back in the day.

By Sam Lyon

From Chris in Hants via text on 81111: "Regardless of today’s outcome, this championship will live long in my memory. It has been an honour watching Tom Watson! What a player!"0835: And that brings me nicely to you guys – while the lower echelons of the leaderboard flay their way from tee to green this morning, I want you lot to get involved in a big, big way. You have two options, unless you are a master of smoke signals or own a particularly reliable carrier pigeon, text me on 81111 or, from 0900 BST, 606 will open its doors for you all to natter away from the comfort of your own homes. Lovely.BBC Sport’s Rob Hodgetts on Twitter: "Gentle murmur in media tent. Fairly empty but people drifting in. Calm before the storm. Blustery day with lots of cloud but sunny patches."0831: However, while Tom Watson’s success would warm the cockles of even Victor Meldrew’s heart, headline-writers the nation over would surely love a win for England’s father-to-be Ross Fisher – and he’s only a shot off the lead after three rounds. Compatriot Lee Westwood, too, would bring a smile to everyone’s faces should he rid himself of the nearly man tag and bag a first major title – but with just six shots separating the top 26 players it really is anyone’s Open. Mathew Goggin, Retief Goosen, Stewart Cink, Jim Furyk, Angel Cabrera – the list of contenders goes on and on – where’s your money0827: So, as Darren Clarke and Mark O’Meara get their final rounds under way, let’s have a look at where we stand shall we Well you’d have to have been living under a rock these past few days to have missed the fact that Tom Watson – has anyone mentioned he’s 59 – is on the brink of history at Turnberry, and what a story it would be. Twenty six years after his last Open triumph, the great American has been tearing up trees all weekend in Ayreshire and it would be a feature-writer’s dream if he were to win here today. Not to mention an inspiring story for every dad and grandad out there – courses all over Britain will suddenly be flooded by octogenarians fuelled by the belief ‘you’re never too old to win it’. My old man has already dusted off his bag and clubs and will be chopping his way round Hainault with yours truly next week – so get your replacement window orders in early, people. From Denis Broomfield, Hampton via text on 81111: "Great golf and great comments. BUT can someone coordinate the number of times the imminent arrival of the BABY FISHER is announced The whole world now k nows about the happy event. Let us know if and when Dad leaves Turnberry. But send parents and baby our best wishes."0821: American Paul Goydos and Japan’s Ryuji Imada are the next pairing having a swing out there, and the former apes Gaunt in bogeying the first. Imada takes a par, but with all due respect I don’t suppose many will be following his duo today – except mummy and daddy Goydos and Imada maybe. From Ken, Aberdeen via text on 81111: "Hold on Mrs Fisher, I’ve £5 e/w on your man at 35-1! Good luck with the baby afterwards! Could be called Claret" From Deano in Somerset via text on 81111: "Let’s hope Watson can show that experience does count in Golf. No matter what the age! Deano in Somerset." 0812: Australian Dan Gaunt, who fired the round of the day on Friday with a 67, is the first man out and about this morning at Turnberry and unfortunately he’s showing the form of his first and third rounds rather than the second as he takes a bogey five at the first. He’s now 13 over and I’m going to stick my neck out and say Dan Gaunt will not be winning the Open. Which should prompt some kind of Lazarus-esque comeback from the Aussie, no doubt…BBC Sport’s Mark Orlovac on Twitter: "Morning. Struggled to sleep last night, huge day ahead. Had a dream about Furyk though, maybe that’s a sign. Wonder how Watson’s feeling"

Rain

0805: Now then, what’s the weather doing at Turnberry, I hear you ask. As luck would have it, one of our men at the Open, Mark Orlovac, has just rung in and says: "It’s overcast, not raining at the moment, but it’s very blowy. I can see white horses on the sea". Be warned, though, rain is forecast…0800: Watson goes out at 1420 alongside Australia’s Mathew Goggin, with Britain’s Lee Westwood and Ross Fisher teeing it up 10 minutes before. But opening proceedings on his lonesome at 0800 is another Aussie, Daniel Gaunt. 0755: Morning folks. Today’s the day when we find out ifTom Watson can become the oldest Open championin history. The veteran eight-time major winner turns 60 on 4 September, but I’ll wager the celebrations will start early if he gets his mitts on the famous Claret Jug for the sixth time

UK conductor dies at Dignitas clinic

Sir Edward Downes. Photograph: Bill Cooper

Renowned British conductor Sir Edward Thomas Downes, CBE, has died at the age of 85, after travelling to right-to-die clinic Dignitas with his wife.

He and his wife Joan, 74, both chose to end their lives at the Swiss clinic, their family said in a statement.

According to the statement, the couple "died peacefully, and under circumstances of their own choosing".

The Birmingham-born conductor enjoyed a 40-year relationship with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

"Our father, who was 85 years old, almost blind and increasingly deaf, had a long, vigorous and distinguished career as a conductor," his family said.

"Our mother, who was 74, started her career as a ballet dancer and subsequently worked as a choreographer and TV producer, before dedicating the last years of her life to working as our father’s personal assistant.

Health problems

"They both lived life to the full and considered themselves to be extremely lucky to have lived such rewarding lives, both professionally and personally.

"After 54 happy years together, they decided to end their own lives rather than continue to struggle with serious health problems."

Sydney Opera House

Born in Birmingham on 17 June 1924, the renowned conductor began playing the violin and violin at the age of five.

His pursuit of conducting was aided by a two-year scholarship to study in Aberdeen, which led him to study with eminent German conductor Hermann Scherchen.

In 1952 he joined the Royal Opera where he remained a company member for 17 years.

He became Associate Music Director in 1991 and conducted a huge repertoire at Covent Garden for over 50 consecutive seasons.

He began his relationship with the BBC Philharmonic as Chief Guest Conductor, going to become Principal Conductor from 1980 to 1991 and later Conductor Emeritus.

Honoured

In 1970 he became Music Director of the Australian Opera and conducted the first performance in the Sydney Opera House.

He was Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Orchestra until 1983 and travelled widely as a guest conductor to opera houses and orchestras all over the world.

Sir Edward was honoured by four music colleges and five universities as well as receiving the Laurence Olivier, Evening Standard, Critics Circle and Royal Philharmonic Society awards.

He became a CBE in 1986 and was knighted in 1991.</p

Airport passenger numbers fall 5.9%

• 12.7m passengers pass through company’s seven airports
• Lowest figure for nine months
• Edinburgh bucks the trend

The number of travellers using major UK airports declined to its lowest level for nine months in June, BAA said today.

The airport operator said a total of 12.7m passengers passed through its airports last month, a reduction of 5.9% on the same period last year.

But the firm, which saw a 7.3% fall in May, said this was the best underlying figure since last September.

BAA had posted a 2.3% decline in passenger numbers in April but this rose to 6.8% when the effect of a late Easter was stripped out.

Heathrow recorded a comparatively modest fall of 3.1% because of its large number of transfer flights.

Stansted, the base for several low-cost carriers including Ryanair and easyJet, was the worst affected airport, falling 11.5%.

In the six months to June 2009, the Essex airport is down 14.4%, compared with the same period last year, as carriers have slashed capacity at the airport.

Domestic traffic was down 8.1% in June, European scheduled flight passengers were reduced by 2.8% and travellers on North Atlantic routes were 9.4% lower.

Long-haul flights were the most resilient sector, almost flat on last year at a 0.2% reduction.

Edinburgh was the only airport to register an increase in traveller numbers, at 1.4% – its third month of growth.

Gatwick had 7.6% fewer passengers in June, while Glasgow and Aberdeen dropped 10.9% and 9.8% respectively.

BAA is embroiled in a battle against the Competition Commission’s decision to make it sell three of its airports.

The commission ruled earlier this year that BAA’s ownership of seven UK airports was anti-competitive and ordered the firm to sell Gatwick and Stansted airports as well as either Glasgow or Edinburgh.

BAA had already decided to sell Gatwick in West Sussex and said last month the sale process was continuing.
