AMD Spinoff Globalfoundries, Arm Partner for SoC Chips

Globalfoundries, which AMD spun off earlier this year, and Arm are teaming up to enable mutual customers to develop processors for mobile products using Arm technologies and Globalfoundries 28-nm manufacturing process. The chips will be aimed at mobile devices such as smartphones and low-cost notebooks. The move comes as other chip makers, notably Intel, are looking to shrink the size of their products to fit into mobile devices.
– Globalfoundries, the manufacturing spinoff from Advanced Micro Devices, is teaming with Arm to help businesses design smaller processors for such devices as mobile phones and low-end notebooks.
In a partnership announced Oct. 6, the two companies said the partnership will enable mutual customers to…

Nvidia Fermi Marks Company’s Next-Generation GPU Architecture

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang introduced Fermi, the companys next-generation graphics processing unit (GPU) architecture designed to accelerate supercomputer-caliber applications such as ray tracing and high-precision scientific computing. Fermi will utilize three billion transistors and 512 CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) cores, and represents Nvidias next best hope for competing vigorously against Intel and Advanced Micro Devices.
– Nvidia plans on releasing its next-generation graphics processing unit architecture,
code-named Fermi, within the next few months. Fermi will incorporate more than three billion transistors and 512 CUDA
(Compute Unified Device Architecture) cores, Nvidia says, which will accelerate
its parallel-c…

Intel, AMD Watch x86 Chip Shipments Jump 10% in Q2

IDC reports x86 processor shipments increased 10 percent in the second quarter of 2009 compared with the previous quarter. Intel again dominated AMD in terms of market share, watching as its Atom processor shipments increased. However, IDC finds that demand for PCs has not returned yet.
– The good news for Intel, Advanced
Micro Devices and the rest of the x86 processor market is that chip
shipments increased 10 percent between the first quarter and the second quarter
of 2009.
However, IDC’s Aug. 6 report on the x86
chip market found that consumer and business demand for new PCs …

AMD Spinoff GlobalFoundries Inks STMicroelectronics

A week after breaking ground on a new $4.2 billion manufacturing plant in upstate New York, GlobalFoundries signs a deal to manufacture products for STMicroelectronics. GlobalFoundries, which AMD spun off in March, will manufacture products that will go into wireless and handheld devices as well as consumer electronics.
– GlobalFoundries, the spinoff company from Advanced Micro Devices, will
manufacture processors for wireless and computer devices for
STMicroelectronics.
GlobalFoundries announced the deal with STMicroelectronics July 29, marking
the first non-AMD customer for the young
manufacturing company.

Intel results beat expectations

Intel micro processing chip

US chipmaker Intel has reported a better-than-expected net profit of $1bn (£610m) for April to June, excluding a massive European Commission fine.

Including the fine, levied for anti-competitive practices in May, the company made a loss of $398m.

Revenue for the three months stood at $8bn, a 15% fall compared with $9.4bn for the same period last year.

Earlier on Tuesday, banking giant Goldman Sachs also reported strong second-quarter results.

"Intel’s second quarter results reflect improving conditions in the PC market segment, with our strongest first to second quarter growth since 1988 and a clear expectation for a seasonally stronger second half," said Intel boss Paul Otellini.

Intel was fined just over 1bn euros by the European Commission for anti-competitive practices.

The Commission found that between 2002 and 2007, it had paid manufacturers and a retailer to favour its chips over those of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Intel said it would appeal against the verdict. </p
