UAL and Continental agree to merge: Love is in the air
The creation of the biggest airline in the world is less exciting than it sounds
THE announcement of a merger to form the world’s largest airline, with the capacity to carry nearly 150m passengers a year, might once have caused a flurry of excitement. But the $3 billion all-share deal to bring together United Airlines (UAL) and Continental Airlines was greeted on May 3rd with a politely stifled yawn. Industry rivals, employees of the two carriers and even consumer advocates—all potential losers from the combination—expressed mild misgivings but concluded that such consolidations were a sign of the times. Wall Street granted lukewarm approval, marking shares in both firms down a little.
Reaction was muted partly because there was nothing surprising about the deal. A couple of years ago, immediately after the merger of two other big American airlines, Delta and Northwest, UAL and Continental tried to follow suit. But record oil prices and the onrushing recession persuaded Continental that it was not the time to take on new risks (not least UAL’s rickety finances). Although both airlines made hefty losses last year, the improving economy, recovering business traffic and cheaper fuel created the conditions for a second attempt. However, the trigger for new talks was an impending tie-up between UAL and another carrier, US Airways. Continental’s boss, Jeff Smisek rang his opposite number at UAL, Glenn Tilton, on April 9th to tell him that there was a better option. Mr Smisek said this week: “I didn’t want to him marry the ugly girl. I wanted him to marry the pretty one, and I’m much prettier.” …

According to officials of the Presidency, the two sides held wide-ranging talks focussing on jointly fighting terrorism, strengthening bilateral ties and ways to address regional issues related to peace and security.
According to Presidential Spokesman Farhatullah Babar, President Zardari called for jointly persuading the international community to devise a marshal plan for the region to banish the militancy and its effects for all time to come. “The two countries need to speak the same language at the international forums because both suffer from the same malaise caused by the same mindset of militancy and extremism”, the Spokesman quoted the President as talking to President Karzai at the bilateral talks between the two sides.
“The two countries need to be on the same page, speak the same language and demand assistance from the international community with the same vigour and intensity,” he added. President Asif Ali Zardari also suggested that the two foreign ministers should sit together and work out the modalities in this regard.
According to the Spokesman, President Zardari also endorsed the suggestion of his Afghan counterpart to convene a meeting of ‘Pak-Afghan Peace Jirga’ after the Afghan Peace Jirga. The Pak-Afghan Peace Jirga will help take the process of friendship further forward.
The two presidents are said to have stressed for enhanced interaction between the two countries to cope with the issues of terrorism and extremism.
President Zardari reiterated the clear national stance across the regimes that unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan were of great importance to Pakistan. He termed terrorism as a common challenge to Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Zardari told his Afghan counterpart that Pakistan was determined to fight militancy to the end, which was a long drawn battle and there were no quick solution to this problem. “Pakistan believes that military action alone was not a solution to the problem,” officials quoted him as saying.
Therefore, President Zardari underlined the need for greater economic cooperation, adding that his Government was determined to correct the past mistakes to carve out a better future.
Reciprocating hostÂ’s remarks, Afghan President Karzai also urged for a partnership, which allows realization of the full potential of human and natural resources. He too desired greater connectivity, more trade and economic cooperation.
He called for new development projects and investments in the two countries driven by energy corridors in the region. Karzai thanked Pakistan for support and efforts for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Afghanistan.
President Zardari pointed that PakistanÂ’s bilateral trade with Afghanistan was US $1.4 billion in 2008 and there was a vast economic potential and great opportunities for cooperation.
He hoped that Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement that was under negotiations would further boost economic interaction between the two countries.
President Zardari also pointed to the over 3 million Afghan refugees that were still in Pakistan and said an early restoration of peace and normalcy in Afghanistan will enable the return of these refugees to their motherland.

PPP, MQM agree to cease fire
KARACHI – Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Sunday agreed to defuse the existing tension between both the coalition parties through negotiations.
The leaders of the two leading political parties agreed to cease fire as well as bury the hatchet and play their role in the restoration of peace and harmony in Karachi, the financial hub of the country.
The meeting, chaired by the Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan, was held at the GovernorÂ’s House and attended by Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah and others. Dr Farooq Sattar, Federal Minister Babar Ghauri, MQM Leader in Sindh Assembly Sardar Ahmed and provincial ministers Adil Siddiqui and Sagheer Ahmed Ansari represented the MQM, while Sindh Ministers Manzoor Wassan, Murad Ali Shah, Rafique Engineer, CM Advisor Rashid Rabbani and PPP Karachi President Najmi Alam stood for the PPP.
It may be noted here that Governor Ishrat-ul-Ebad had summoned the meeting of the provincial coalition parties at the GovernorÂ’s House to remove the rift between the two sides.
The MQM leaders expressed their deep concern over the killings of innocent MQM workers and common people by the gangsters of Lyari. They denounced the support of some PPP leaders to the Lyari gang war terrorists, saying that the government had not arrested a single terrorist involved in the killings.
However, the PPP leaders disassociated themselves from the culprits of gang war, saying that they had nothing to do with these terrorists.
Talking to journalists after the meeting, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said the government was going to set up a complaint phone number to check extortion in the City. He categorically said there was no relation or link between the PPP and Lyari Peace Committee, and warned the Committee that the government would not tolerate any activity of extortion and other heinous crimes in the city.
“Some elements are trying to disrupt economic activities by creating lawlessness in the City. The government will take all possible measures to restore peace and harmony in the megalopolis, while Rangers have been given additional powers to take strict action against miscreants,” he said and added “The criminal elements are using some sensitive areas of the City for their vested interest; such parts of the City included Lyari, Pak Colony, Orangi Town, Korangi, etc.”
The Minister said they were in touch with President Asif Ali Zardari, MQM Chief Altaf Hussain and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, besides taking their guidance to bring the situation under control.
“We will take action against all the criminals using the names of the party and exploiting the situation. All the matters between the PPP and MQM would be resolved in the future with mutual consultation,” he declared.
On the occasion, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah said, “We would take action against all those criminal elements who are using the name of the PPP or MQM for their criminal activities.”
He said there was no ethnic or sectarian rift in the province, adding that the PPP and MQM had agreed that all the matters would be addressed with mutual consultation.
The criminal elements wanted to destabilise the present coalition government through their acts of terror, he said.
Vowing to foil nefarious designs of criminals, the CM said, “Peace will be ensured at every cost. We do not have particular targets, but action would be taken against all elements creating turbulence,” he added.
MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar said the incidents of killings was neither ethnic nor political issue, adding that there was no rift between the workers of PPP and MQM.
He said the meeting between the PPP and MQM had proved very effective.
“We have been given assurance (by the government) that the action would be taken against the criminals, drug-sellers, land-grabbers, those criminal elements who are responsible for the target-killings, those members of the People’s Peace Committee if evidence was found about their involvement in criminal activities or target-killings, he added.
“Terrorists elements want to destroy peace and (disrupt) development in the metropolis,” he said, adding that the criminals wanted to destabilise the country through such heinous activities.
He said the Baloch people were their brothers and “we would not allow the land mafia, drug mafia and criminals to take innocent Baloch hostage.”

Zardari, Nawaz agree to democratise Constitution
LAHORE – President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N Quaid Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif met at latterÂ’s Raiwind residence here on Friday, and reiterated their resolve to purge the Constitution of all undemocratic clauses, including the most controversial 17th Amendment, but fell short of giving a time frame to undo the unconstitutional changes done by the former govt.
In their four-hour long meeting, which took place after a gap of eight months, the two leaders agreed to work together to steer the country out of the current crisis.
The meeting was in pursuance of the telephonic talk between the two leaders on Monday.
In his meeting with PML-N chief, President Asif Ali Zardari was assisted by Raja Pervez Ashraf, Mian Raza Rabbani, Jehangir Badar, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Babar Awan, Nazar Muhammad Gondal, Syed Khurshid Shah and Farhatullah Babar.
The other side comprised of PML-N Quaid Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, Raja Zafarul Haq, Syed Ghous Ali Shah, Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa, Senator Pervez Rasheed, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Sardar Mehtab Abbasi and Sardar Yaqoob Nasir.
In the 11-point joint declaration issued at the end of meeting, the two parties reiterated that dialogue and discussions was the essence of the democratic process and that the doors to meaningful and result-oriented talks should always remain open.
They reiterated that after the February 2008 elections, installation of democratic govt and getting hold of Presidency by democratic forces, it was necessary to remove the controversial clauses from the Constitution that had been inserted into it by successive dictatorships without the consent of the masses.
The two parties reiterated commitment to the principles laid down in the Charter of Democracy (CoD) to democratise the Constitution and rid it of all undemocratic clauses including 17th Amendment.
They expressed the hope that the Parliamentary Committee set up to review the Constitution would complete its task in the shortest possible time and propose suitable amendments in it.
The two parties expressed the view that the situation in Balochistan needed to be addressed urgently and seriously.
Political dialogue and development of the province should be pressed into service to remove the sense of alienation of the people of the province.
They expressed the view that the Parliament should play a more pro-active role in meeting the aspirations of the people of Balochistan.
Both sides agreed that the problems faced by the country were too stupendous to be resolved by any one political party or State institution and required the collective efforts of all political forces and parties.
The two parties also agreed that militancy posed the most serious threat to national security and that holistic approach was needed to address the issue. They agreed that the terrorists should not be allowed to impose their agenda on the people through guns and bullets.
They agreed that more of such contacts and meetings would help push forward the process of democratisation of the Constitution in the light of CoD and to find solutions to the problems faced by the country particularly national security, economic and energy crisis, price-hike and unemployment compounded by the military dictatorship.
According to insiders, the two leaders discussed several issues in frank and candid manner as overall mood of the meeting was cordial from very start to culmination, though they did express reservations they had about each other on various issues.
Nawaz reportedly told Zardari that his party wanted to go alongwith PPP, but they were prevented from doing so, first by getting them ineligible from contesting elections and then by imposition of GovernorÂ’s Rule.
President Zardari, in turn, assured Nawaz that his party would not create any problem for PML-N in future.
Nawaz assured Zardari that his party would not destabilise PPP govt and allow it to complete its full term.
Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari was accorded a warm welcome at Lahore Airport and was received by Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, CM Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Senior minister Raja Riaz and other big wigs of the govt.

Nawaz Sharif alongwith central party leaders, Khawaja Asif, Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khosa, Chief Secretary Javed Mehmood and others welcomed him at Jatti Umra helipad.
President Asif Ali Zardari greeted Nawaz Sharif on his acquittal from plane hijacking case. He termed the Supreme Court decision to acquit Nawaz from plane hijacking case as a welcome development, saying it would help strengthening democracy in the country.
From the helipad, President Asif Ali Zardari, PML-N chief Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif used one car to reach SharifsÂ’ residence in Raiwind, as President Zardari invited Sharif brothers to accompany him in his own car.
Meanwhile, before his meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari,Nawaz Sharif held an important meeting with party senior leaders and took them into confidence on different issues. He also sought suggestions from them to be discussed with President Zardari.
During the meeting, all the party stalwarts endorsed his decisions and announced to extend all out support to him.
Raja Zafarul Haq, Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khosa, Javed Hashmi, Khawaja Asif, Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Pervaiz Rashid, Sardar Yaqoob and other senior leaders attended the meeting. Opposition leader in National Assembly Ch. Nisar Ali Khan and Iqbal Zafar Jhagra joined the meeting through telephone.
Nawaz Sharif also hosted a luncheon reception in the honour of President Asif Ali Zardari and his delegation. Both wearing shalwar kameez and waistcoat talked in a friendly manner and avoided peeping into bitter past. After the lunch they held 4-hour meeting in a happy mood.
