Schumpeter: Ahead of the curve

Daniel Bell, who died on January 25th, was one of the great sociologists of capitalism

ASKED what he specialised in, Daniel Bell replied: “generalisations”. Mr Bell lived a varied life. He grew up in New York City, so poor that he sometimes had to scavenge for food. Yet he ended his days in bourgeois comfort in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He spent 20 years as a journalist, mostly as Fortune’s labour editor, before decamping to academia. His boss, Henry Luce, desperate to keep his star writer, asked him why he was leaving. He gave four reasons: June, July, August and September.

His taste for generalisations grew with the eating. He produced three of the great works of post-war sociology: “The End of Ideology” (1960), “The Coming of Post-Industrial Society” (1973) and “The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism” (1978). On the Times Literary Supplement’s list of the 100 most influential books since the second world war, two were by Mr Bell. …

SGX CEO says will press ahead with bid to buy ASX: report

Singapore Exchange (SGX) (SGXL.SI) will try to push through its proposed US$7.8 billion ($10.1 billion) acquisition of Australian stock exchange ASX (ASX.AX) despite strong opposition in Australia, SGX CEO Magnus Bocker said in an interview with the Straits Times newspaper today.

“All the reactions that I have seen so far, I am not really surprised by,” Bocker told the Singapore paper.

Keppel AmFELS delivers third Rowan rig ahead of schedule

Keppel AmFELS Inc., the wholly-owned US subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M), says it has delivered the third of four EXL jackup rigs to a subsidiary of Rowan Companies, Inc. (Rowan) ahead of schedule and within budget.

Christened Rowan EXL-III, the rig is scheduled to depart Keppel AmFELS’ yard in Brownsville, Texas in January 2011 to commence operations on an ultra deep gas well for McMoRan Exploration Company in the Gulf of Mexico.

STI +0.1%; CIMB expects further weakness ahead

The STI is +0.1% at 3,150.90, rebounding slightly after yesterday’s 0.9% fall which was due to Moody’s Investors Service putting Spain’s Aa1 ratings on review for a possible downgrade, signalling a possible escalation of the euro-zone’s problems.

Volume is ultra-thin so far at 154 million shares worth $158 million, and the market breadth is flattish, suggesting trading interest has waned further as we edge closer to the year-end.

Action in Singapore stock market remains subdued as fund managers, institutional investors largely staying on sidelines as 2010 winds down.
