HANGU – At least 12 people were killed and 30 others got injured when a suicide bomber attacked a convoy of civilians guarded by security forces here in tehsil Tal on Friday.
According to details, the suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the convoy of vehicles escorted by law enforcement agencies that was on its way from Tal of Hangu district to Parachinar, Kurram Agency, on Tal-Parachinar Road in the jurisdiction of Dandore area of Hangu.
The injured were rushed to CMH Tal and District Headquarters Hospital Hangu where the condition of some of them was stated to be critical.
Being a sensitive area, passenger caravans passing from this area are usually accompanied by four to five vehicles of security forces. Four vehicles were also destroyed in the attack. Soon after the incident, the security forces cordoned off the area and imposed curfew. Similarly Tal Bazaar was also closed down.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani strongly condemned the suicide attack. The two leaders in their separate messages expressed their deep shock and grief over the sad incident in which several security personnel and civilians were killed.
They expressed their resolve not to be deterred by such acts of violence and vowed to continue the fight against terrorism till its logical conclusion.
The two leaders conveyed their grief to the bereaved families and directed best possible treatment for the injured. They also sought an enquiry into the incident and directed the provincial authorities to investigate and submit a report.
NWFP Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani, Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti, ANP President Asfandyar Wali Khan and Provincial President Afrasyab Khattak have condemned the attack. They expressed sympathies with the families of those who breathed their lost in this deadly suicide attack and prayed for early recovery of the injured.
Agencies add: “Our convoy was hit by a big explosion,” said witness Javed Hussain, who was in the convoy of vehicles carrying Shiite Muslims to the city of Peshawar. “It’s all chaos here. I myself have seen four dead and two of them are children. I have seen four wounded women.”
Mir Chaman, Deputy Superintendent of Police in Hangu, said at least 12 people were killed and 30 were wounded.
Kohat Commissioner Khalid Khan told AFP the 12 dead included four women and two children. Police said 31 people were wounded. “The target was a Shia convoy. This is sectarian violence,” he said. Police said a curfew had been slapped on the market area. “The dead include seven Shias who were travelling in the convoy,” said police officer Abdul Rashid Khan.
Local lawmaker Mufti Janan Ahmed said the bomber ploughed his vehicle into the centre of the 20-vehicle convoy, which was carrying Shia travellers coming from the northwestern towns of Parachinar to Kohat.
Police official Islamuddin Khattak said the blast destroyed five vehicles and police were battling to extinguish the resulting blaze.
According to bomb disposal squad, about seven kilogram explosive material was used in the blast.
More than 3,000 people have been killed in suicide and bomb attacks across Pakistan since July 2007, a campaign blamed on militants opposed to the governmentÂ’s alliance with the United States. But after a significant rise in bloodshed in late 2009, there has been a marked decline in attacks so far this year.
There have been no mass civilian losses or bombings in major cities since a bombing at a volleyball match killed 101 people on New YearÂ’s Day. That was around two weeks before the US drone attack that may have killed Hakimullah Mehsud.

PESHAWAR – Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has announced that the federal government would bear all the expenses of reconstruction and rehabilitation carried out in the terrorism-affected areas of NWFP along with tribal regions of the country.
He said that Rs. 50 billion have been allocated for the capacity building of NWFP and wherever needed the funds would be provided.
In his address to the office bearers of Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), local traders and media persons here at the Chief MinisterÂ’s House here on Thursday, Gilani also announced waiving off loans of small farmers hailing from Malakand division that amount up to Rs 2.66 billion and announced a special package for the development of industrial estates in the province.
Governor NWFP Owais Ahmad Ghani, Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti, Federal Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen, Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira, Federal Minister Najm-ud-Din Khan, Speaker NWFP Assembly Kiramatullah Khan, senior provincial ministers, members NWFP Cabinet and some of the members of the provincial assembly were also present on the occasion.
The Prime Minister that the first category areas of terror-hit areas in this regard include localities that have been hit worst by militancy, which comprise seven tribal agencies and 11 districts in NWFP namely Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Aurakzai, Kurram, South Waziristan, North Waziristan Agencies as well Malakand Agency and districts of Swat, Bunir, Shangla, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Hangu, Bannu, Tank, Kohat and Chitral.
Category two includes seven districts including Peshawar, Charsadda, Dera Ismail Khan, Battagram, Lakki Marwat, Mardan and Swabi. Category three comprises five districts of NWFP including Nowshera, Harripur, Abbottabad, Mansehra, and district Kohistan, the Prime Minister informed.
Regarding the power scarcity, the Prime Minister said that the matter could not be resolved in a short time and needed an effective strategy. If a short-term plan was made in this regard, it would take three years whereas a medium-term plan would take about ten years to solve the problem of electricity shortage in the country, he added.
He said that Rs 17.12 billion have been released for making good of the losses occurred to Malakand division in the wake of militancy.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani continued saying that tax payers of those areas included in category one and two have been extended the facility under which if they pay their due taxes including customs duty and central excise duty till 30th June 2010 then their surcharges and fines would be forgiven. Likewise all the utility bills of Malakand region were waived off from the month of May to that of December 2009. The Prime Minister said that already Rs 56 million has been announced by his Government for the affectees of Meena Bazaar blast in Peshawar and announced rupees 5 crore for ‘Shuhada trust’ as well, apart from announcing the initiation of construction of CRC canal in Dera Ismail Khan.
Yusuf Raza Gilani further said that masses have elected him for the term of five years and that constitutional tenure would be completed by his Government. He said that the he was sensitive to the fact that the country was passing through a time of trial and added that all the political parties of the country were taken into confidence whether they are within or outside the Parliament, in any decision taken by the Government.
He said that along with NWFP his Government took the decision with unity of purpose that if military action was taken, the entire nation would be behind it and it is now evident that all the nation was with NWFP though, earlier, hesitation had prevailed about whether steps should be taken against terrorism or not but now everybody including civil society were united against terrorism and militancy.
He said that it was but one of the credit of the current coalition Government that today the nation was united and in one say against terrorism and that the military action against terrorism was supported by the whole nation. The world was expressing its surprise over the successes of Pakistan against terrorism, added the Prime Minister, and continued that we told the world that 3.5 million Afghan refugees had come to Pakistan and they are still here in the country but the people of NWFP were hospitable by every mean that they also open their doors for serving their suffering brethrens from Swat and Malakand region.
The Prime Minister further said that Pakistan was a front line state in fight against terrorism while NWFP was a front line province in this regard and that said that we salute those people, leadership, police, frontier constabulary, traders that rendered sacrifices in the wake.
He said that though there was a global financial crunch, his Government sailed well and put the country out of economic crisis and said that it was but a better planning of the Government that every task was carried out with satisfaction even amidst the war against terrorism that was costing billions of rupees.
He said that the issue of net hydel profit of NWFP was resolved in his tenure, NFC award was unanimously announced that were the example of political understandings that could not be yielded by any dictatorship and were the gifts of democracy to the country.
Prime Minister claimed saying that nothing was done in the previous regime regarding coming across the power shortage and no new project in this regard was started either, saying that his Government was determined to remove both the problems of shortage of electricity and gas shortage and added that to address the shortage of water, work on construction of dams was also started.
Bomber blitzes Peshawar Press Club
PESHAWAR – At least four persons were killed and 25 others got injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up in front of the main gate of Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday.
Police sources and eyewitness informed that the suicide bomber tried to enter the press club building but detonated his explosive-laden jacket when Riaz-ud-Din, police constable, intercepted him at the main gate. The blast occurred at 11:35 a.m. and its intensity was so severe that the front gate, boundary wall and windowpanes of the press club building were damaged.
Soon after the blast, rescue teams and Edhi ambulances rushed towards the site and shifted the injured and the dead to Lady Reading Hospital. Police and bomb disposal squad cordoned off the area and collected evidence from the site.
Chief of Capital City Police Liaqat Ali Khan said that the suicide bomber was about 18 to 20-year-old. He said the bomber was carrying some eight kilograms explosive material and his actual target was Peshawar Press Club.
The deceased included Constable Riaz-ud-Din and an audit officer Rubina wife of Ghulam Ghaus resident of Yakatoot. The injured included Abdul Nabi son of Marjan, Abdul Rahman son of Gul Khanan, Abid Naveed son of Ghulam Chouse, Amjad Khan son of Qasim Khan, Asif son of Gul Rehan, Orangzeb son of Bashir-ul-Haq, Ayub son of Yousaf, Fayaz son of Mohammad Afzal, Haq Nawaz son of Abdul Ghafoor, Imran Khan son of Muhammad Nawaz, Kamran son of Hayatullah, Meher Negar wife of Iqbal, Mian Iqbal Shah, Minhaj son of Mohammad Shoaib, Mohammad Saeed son of Abdul Rasheen, Mohammad Sharif son of Manshah Khan, Nasir Jamal son of Nisar Ahmad, Naseem Gul son of Arif Gul, Qadir Gul son of Jumma Gul, Anees Khan son of Jumma Gul and Yasir Jamil son of Fazal Subhan.
Most of the injured were passers-by while four of them were working with the press club. One of these four, Accountant Mian Iqbal Shah, was stated to be in critical condition and was admitted in Intensive Care Unit of Lady Reading Hospital.
Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti, Governor NWFP Owais Ahmad Ghani, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan, Pakistan PeopleÂ’s Party (Sherpao) President Aftab Ahmad, Federal Minister for Communication Dr Arbab Alamgir Khan and Central President of Pakistan Muslim League (likeminded) Saleem Saifullah strongly condemned the blast and said that sacrifices rendered by journalist community and police would be written in golden words. They expressed sympathies with the bereaved families and prayed Allah Almighty to shower His blessings on the departed souls. CM Hoti immediately ordered a probe into the blast. He expressed sorrow and solidarity with the journalist community over the incident and said the operation against terrorists would continue till their complete elimination.
Later, the Chief Minister visited the press club. Speaker NWFP Assembly Karamatullah Chagharmati and NWFP Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar Hussain were also present on the occasion.
Agencies add: A suicide bomber Tuesday attacked Peshawar Press Club, killing four people and wounding 25 others in an unprecedented assault on the media.
Strapped with explosives packed with nails, a young man walked up to the gate of the press club and blew himself up as policemen tried to stop him entering the building, officials said.
“I was coming out of the canteen when I suddenly heard a huge blast. Smoke engulfed the building immediately and when I reached the spot, I saw human organs littered on the ground,” said a journalist Nisar Mohammad Khan.
The force of the explosion blew out the windows at the press club, damaged the guard hut and ripped through nearby vehicles, said witnesses. One photographer identified the bomber as a teenager with a fledgling beard.
A doctor at Lady Reading Hospital said four people were killed by the blast including a policeman, a press club employee and a woman while 25 others were wounded. Police said four journalists were among the wounded.
Bomb disposal squad chief Tanveer Ahmed said most of the casualties were caused by steel pellets and nails stuffed in the suicide bomberÂ’s vest.
The press club declared three days of mourning, but journalists vowed to continue their work despite mounting threats from militants who have carved out fiefdoms across swathes of the northwest.
“The press club was already receiving threats and warning letters – journalists here are practically working in a war zone,” said the clubÂ’s president, Shamim Shahid.
“The role of the media is even more important in this situation. We will continue our role and will tell the truth in any case,” he told AFP.
Fayaz Aziz, a photographer, said local papers had received threats from the Taliban complaining about their coverage.
“Militants are not happy with us, they are unhappy because the newspapers called them ‘terroristsÂ’… they want us to write ‘TalibanÂ’,” he said.
Head of the bomber was found from the site. Havaldar Riaz Khan and a woman Robina were among the dead. Press club employees: Ayub Khan and Kamran, head constables Minhaj and Muhammad Saeed, and constable Muhammad Faheem and club accountant Mian Iqbal Shah were among the injured.
According to bomb disposal squad, 8 to 12 kilogram explosive material was used by the bomber.
The Provincial Labour Minister was scheduled to hold a press conference at the club later Tuesday.
Global watchdog Reporters Without Borders rates Pakistan as one of the most dangerous countries for journalists and says five reporters have been killed this year, although it is unclear if militants or others were responsible.
Militant attacks have killed more than 2,700 people since July 2007.
Bomber unleashes mayhem in packed Charsadda market
CHARSADDA – At least 32 people were killed and 100 others wounded in a suicide car bomb blast at congested Farooq-e-Azam Chowk here on Tuesday.
The blast was so severe that it damaged signboards and several vehicles including two buses. It jolted the entire city of Charsadda and smashed windowpanes of the nearby buildings.
The injured were shifted to District Headquarter (DHQ) Hospital Charsadda and Peshawar. Dr Manzoorullah of DHQ Hospital told journalists that at least 24 dead bodies had been brought to the hospital. Some critically injured people were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar.
Soon after the blast, police and security forces cordoned off the area.
Meanwhile, NWFP Governor Awais Ahmad Ghani, Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti and Provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain have strongly condemned the deadly bomb blast and termed it a coward act of terrorism. They said war on terror would continue and soon militants would be defeated.
Aftab Ahmad Sherpao, Chief of Pakistan People Party (Sherpao) has also condemned the Charsadda blast and expressed sorrow and grief over the loss of innocent lives.
AFP adds: It was the third militant attack in NWFP in as many days. The vehicle rigged with explosives blew up on a road lined with fruit and juice shops, ripping off shop roofs and littering the ground with slippers, human flesh and broken push carts, witnesses said.
“It was a terrible scene. There were injured and wounded everywhere,” one witness told reporters. “I joined the relief and rescue operation and myself removed about a dozen casualties.”
“We have at present 25 dead. Six of them are children and three are women,” Doctor Zulfiqar Ahmad told AFP at the main hospital where anguished relatives were sobbing. “There are 42 wounded people,” he said. Six seriously wounded were taken to Peshawar. A senior police official in the district confirmed the death toll was 25 and that all the victims were civilians who had been in the area was so crowded when the bomber unleashed mayhem at around 4:15 pm.
“It was a suicide car bomb blast. Twenty-five people died and more than 40 were injured – all of them are civilians,” senior police official Liaquat Ali told AFP at the bomb site.
Bomber kills 32 in pre-Eid carnage
PESHAWAR — At least 32 people were killed and 56 others injured when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden car into a hotel in Ustarzai area in district Kohat on Friday.
In a latter development, three more persons were killed when some unknown assailants opened indiscriminate fire on the funeral of one of the victims of the blast.
The bomber blew himself up at a bazaar outside Kismat Ali hotel near a bus-stand in Usterzai locality apparently dominated by Shia community on Hangu Road that resulted in flattering the two-story hotel completely, killing 32 people and injuring 50 others. Besides, damaging 26 shops and 15 vehicles.
The dead bodies lay on the road and casualties were trapped under the debris from shops that caved in after the blast. Eyewitnesses said that several cars were destroyed while the intense blast brought down more than two dozen shops at the crowded market.
They said that the suicide bomber struck his explosive-filled car with other vehicles parked on the roadside. As the bomber blew himself up the whole buildings on both sides of the road caved in completely.
At the time of suicide attack, the area was packed with shoppers buying food and sweets for Eidul Fitr holiday likely to be celebrated on Sunday in the province. An eyewitness said that a suicide bomber blew up a car filled with explosives in the market, saying the attack occurred near a bus stop where passenger buses and coaches arrive and depart from other towns including FATA.
According to the bomb disposal squad, it was a suicide attack, in which the explosives-laden vehicle probably contained more than 150kg of explosives was used and the blast shook Kohat.
The rescue teams worked through the afternoon to pull victims from the rubble. Most of the injured are stated to be in critical condition and they were taken to Peshawar. Furthermore, emergency was declared at hospitals in Kohat. Soon after the explosion, Kohat-Hangu road was closed off for all sort of traffic.
A crowd of Shia community, angry at the failure of the police to provide security in their vulnerable neighborhoods destroyed a police car with rocks when it arrived at the scene of the blast. The Shia community mostly inhabits the area where the attack took place and there has been sectarian violence in the past. No-one claimed responsibility for the attack
In a latter development, at least three people were killed when some unknown assailants opened indiscriminate fire on a funeral in a Kohat area, reported a private TV channel. The people were attending the funeral of one of the victims of the suicide attack. Two people were also injured in the firing incident who were taken to nearby hospital. The assailants, however, managed to flee from the scene.
It was the second attack in two days in the area in the first one a planted bomb exploded with a big bang at an electronic shop injured three persons. Meanwhile, NWFP Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani and Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti have condemned KohatÂ’s suicide attack in strong words.
Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari Friday strongly condemned the Kohat blast. President Zardari who is currently in London on an official visit, in a message, highly deplored the incident and said the perpetrators of such heinous crime would not be spared.
He said the government would leave no stone unturned to find the culprits and give them severe punishment under the law. He condoled with the families of the deceased and directed the medical staff to ensure proper treatment of the injured.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has strongly condemned the bomb blast and directed the concerned authorities to carry out inquiry into the incident. In a message, the Prime Minister asked the staff at hospitals to provide best medical facilities to the injured.
He said the government would take every possible step to root out the menace of terrorism from the country. He condoled with the families of the deceased and prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed souls in peace.
Meanwhile, NWFP Chief Minister Amir Haidar Khan Hoti has announced compensation package for affectees of Kohat bomb blast, according to which those martyred in the incident, will be provided Rs300,000 each and those injured seriously would be given Rs100,000 per head.
The chief minister strongly condemned the bomb blast at Kacha Pakha (Kohat) and immediately directed probe into the incident. He directed the law-enforcement agencies to utilize all its resources for the arrest of the culprits adding that the commitments of the government and the Pakhtuns against terrorism could not be shaken through such cowardly acts of terrorism.
The chief minister said that those shedding blood of innocent Muslims in the last “Ashra” of revered month of Ramazan don’t deserve to be called as human beings. He said that the terrorists’ network was broken during the law-enforcement operation and with the support of the general public.
He appealed to the people of Kohat to remain patient and cooperate with the law-enforcement agencies in arresting the miscreants and assured that the enemies of religion and humanity would be brought to book. The chief minister also directed the administrations of hospitals in Kohat to take every possible measure for the treatment of the injured. He expressed solidarity with family members of the martyred and the injured and prayed for the dead that they might rest in peace in heaven. He also wished the injured speedy recovery from injuries.
