“Marty’s claims should be investigated”

Albanian Acting Ombudsman Florina Nuni agrees that it is necessary to fully and objectively investigate the claims from CoE Rapporteur Dick Marty’s report.

She says she accepts universal and indivisible nature of human rights and their importance for human dignity and peace in the region.

Albania: Demonstrations “threat to security”

Albanian police say demonstrations planned by the opposition for Friday in Tirana pose a threat for national security, public order, human rights and freedoms. At the same time, Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha stated that everything is under control.

Albanian PM furious at CoE rapporteur

Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha has hurled more serious accusations at Council of Europe (CoE) Rapporteur Dick Marty.

Following the adoption of the report on the human organ trafficking by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), he referred to the Swiss senator’s report a “racist”, and said that the “anti-Albanian propaganda had started in Serbia under Slobodan MiloÅ¡ević”.

Albanian PM furious at CoE rapporteur

Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha has hurled more serious accusations at Council of Europe (CoE) Rapporteur Dick Marty.

BBC shuts down Serbian, Albanian services

The BBC is due to outline its plans to close five of its 32 World Service language services.
Staff are due to be informed of the redundancy details on Wednesday, and it is thought that about 650 jobs will be lost from a workforce of some 2,400.

K. Albanian woman dies during illegal crossing

The frozen remains of a young woman were found on the Croatian side near the Izačić border crossing between that country and Bosnia. The woman was a Kosovo Albania from the town of Peć, said reports.

Albanian opposition calls for new protest

Albanian opposition leader Edvin Rama called on his supporters on Sunday to gather for “a new peaceful protest” on Friday. This would come a week after the clashes between protesters and police in Tirana which claimed three lives.

“Thaci could testify at KLA trial”

Kosovo Albanian PM Hashim Thaci could testify at the trial of several leaders of the former so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). They are Sabit Geci and Riza Alija, Albanian language daily Koha Ditore reported in Priština on Thursday.

EULEX prosecutor travels to Albania

Prosecutor of the EULEX Mission in Kosovo Isabelle Arnal conferred Monday in Tirana with Albanian colleagues, said reports. They talked about starting an investigation into human organ trafficking in Kosovo and Albania in the late 1990s, allegedly organized by Kosovo Albanian Prime Minister Hashim Thaci at the time he was one of the leaders of the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).

Albanian deputy PM resigns

Albanian Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Ilir Meta resigned today amid corruption accusations.

Meta resigned after Top-Channel TV aired a videotape which shows him asking former Economy Minister Dritan Prifti to intervene over a hydropower plant concession tender.

CoE rapporteur again accused of “racism”

Albanian PM Sali Berisha and Kosovo Albanian Acting President Jakup Krasniqi have accused Council of Europe (CoE) Rapporteur Dick Marty of “racism”.

Berisha and Kransiqi held consultations in Tirana ahead of Marty’s testimony before the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee.

Albanian deputy PM under investigation

Prosecution has launched an investigation against Albanian Deputy PM Ilir Meta based on a video which shows him rigging hydropower plant concession tender.

He will be charged with accepting bribes and abuse of office, the prosecution announced yesterday. Meta has decided to renounce his immunity.

K. Albanians: Marty report postpones dialogue

A Kosovo Albanian official who holds the office of acting Kosovo president says the Marty report may postpone the Belgrade-PriÅ¡tina dialogue. Jakup Krasniqi has stated that the “Kosovo institutions must clarify the situation after accusations and slander” he says was done by Special Rapporteur of the Council of Europe (CoE) Dick Marty.

Thaci’s “Goebbels” comment angers Swiss

Kosovo Albanian PM Hashim Thaci has angered politicians in Switzerland when he compared the Marty report to the Nazi German propaganda of Joseph Goebbels.
According to Switzerland’s Le Matin daily, the comparison is violent and offensive to politicians in Switzerland.

Arms trafficking accusations described as “racist slander”

Albanian PM Sali Berisha today in Tirana said a report linking him to arms smuggling in Kosovo was tantamount to “racist slander”. Belgrade daily Politika on Monday ran an article based on information it received from the Serbian War Crimes Prosecution, linking Berisha, then an opposition politician and former Albanian president, to selling arms illegally to the KLA in Kosovo in 1998.

Sali Berisha, who is currently Albania’s prime minister, was one of the chief arms smugglers during the war in Kosovo. This is according to a report in Belgrade’s Politika newspaper this Monday.

Albanian prosecution rejects accusations

The Supreme Court of Albania dismissed all accusations of Council of Europe (CoE) rapporteur Dick Marty.
The Swiss senator wrote in a report published last week that KLA took their Serb and other civilians victims kidnapped in Kosovo to Albania, where their body parts were removed to be sold in the black organ market.

Albania rejects Marty’s report

Albanian authorities denied allegations of the country’s involvement in organ trafficking presented in a report by CoE’s Dick Marty. Albania’s Deputy Prime Minister Ilir Meta said that Marty’s report is full of prejudice and based on fabrications, and Interior Minister Lulzim Basha called the allegations unfounded and unsupported by facts, Albanian news agency ATA reported.

Albanian mafia behind Swiss heroin market

Swiss media say that all heroin smuggling groups that have so far been discovered in Switzerland are Albanian or “citizens of Kosovo”.

Geneva Deputy Public Prosecutor Yves Bertossa has stated that the Albanian mafia is one of the most powerful ones among nine identified mafias in the world, Geneva-based daily Tribune de Geneve reported.

Thaci, KLA named in human organ trade report

The ethnic Albanian leaders of the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) were responsible for organizing human organ trafficking. This is according to a report submitted by CoE investigator Dick Marty, that should be discussed in late January 2011.
