Elvis Costello :: 04.13.10 :: Arlington Theatre :: Santa Barbara, CA

Elvis Costello :: 04.13 :: Santa Barbara

Elvis Costello, in his trademark geeky, large rim glasses and stylish hat, played a solo show in front of an enthusiastic crowd, as part of the U.C. Santa Barbara’s Arts and Lectures concert series. Costello is riding a huge new wave of success, due to his popular television series Spectacle, now in its second year. The elegant and intimate Arlington Theatre was the perfect venue for this morphing musical magician to showcase over three decades of songwriting genius. The set, lasting a little over two hours, included 24 songs, ranging from his first American hit from 1977, “Watching The Detectives,” to songs from his most recent album, Secret, Profane and Sugarcane. This newest work is a co-production with T Bone Burnett, who Costello has collaborated with since the 80s.

Costello is one of the most prolific songwriters in modern pop music, in the company of legends such as Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney (the latter of which he has also collaborated with). But even more impressive is this master musician’s chameleon ability to reinvent his music time and again. His catalog of at least 44 albums includes forays into punk rock, pop, jazz-fusion, acoustic folk, country, and even classical music. Each new tour reveals a new take on his older songs.

The solo show at the Arlington was no exception, reworking older material into new masterpieces, while blending it with his newer work. Armed with an army of no less than ten guitars, each with a unique sound, he covered the gamut of his musical library. As satirical as ever, the older but ever feisty icon bantered with the adoring crowd. At one point, he introduced his guest star, which was himself sitting at a separate acoustic set up with yet another guitar, creating a sound reminiscent of a bygone era. Songs like “Sulphur to Sugarcane” from his new album sounded like they could have been played by an early 20th century minstrel show. Later, Costello completely unplugged his guitar and sat on the edge of the stage billowing, sans microphone into the crowd. The eerie, quiet notes created yet another new layer of sound as they bounced off the theatre walls. Then, in an instant, Costello switched to an electric guitar back on the main stage. He commenced a rock fusion version of “Watching The Detectives,” complete with digital sound loops so that he could play lead over his own rhythm. It was a sound more reminiscent of Joe Satriani than the angry young man of 70s punk-pop fame.

With each new song Costello bounced about the stage, cajoling the crowd to sing, clap or dance along to classic old songs or quirky new material. The enthusiastic response included a standing ovation after nearly every song. Both the exhausted crowd and beloved performer seemed content as the marathon show came to an end, dripping with mutual admiration. Elvis Costello may have been making hits for several decades, but in no way does he appear to be “A Man Out of Time.”

Robert Plant Album/Tour with Patty Griffin, Darrell Scott & More

ROBERT PLANT AND THE BAND OF JOY TO TOUR U.S.A.

JULY SHOWS TO INCLUDE MATERIAL FROM NEW ROUNDER ALBUM

Robert Plant

Robert Plant has confirmed a 12 city North American tour. Beginning in July, this first leg of shows, which will be followed by further dates in the fall, will preview material from a new album. Featuring a diverse group of musicians – Patty Griffin, vocals; Darrell Scott, multi-instrumentalist/vocals; Byron House, bass/vocals; Marco Giovino, drums and percussion/vocals; including co-producer Buddy Miller, guitar/vocals. The album is set for release on Rounder, late summer/early fall.

Kicking off in Memphis on July 13 (see full tour schedule below) the tour will feature Plant and the ‘Band of Joy’ – the same musicians who also appear and play on the album.

Says Plant: “It’s been a blast working on these new songs… and I’m enjoying such creativity and vitality. It’s been a remarkable change of direction for all of us and as a group we all seem to have developed a new groove.”

In recent weeks Plant has been in the studio working on the planned release, which will be his first since Raising Sand, the multi-platinum, six-time Grammy winning collaboration with fellow Rounder artist Alison Krauss. Krauss has most recently been recording with her longtime band Union Station, and will be touring with them this summer. The pair do not expect to announce a new album or tour in the coming year, though when asked about the collaboration, Plant says: “Oh yes, Alison and I get together quite often… and sometimes we dance.”

Alison Krauss & Union Station To Play Telluride Bluegrass

ALISON KRAUSS AND UNION STATION TO PLAY TELLURIDE BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL

Alison Krauss & Union Station

Planet Bluegrass has announced the addition of Alison Krauss & Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas to the lineup for the 37th Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival, June 17-20 in Telluride, CO. This festival performance will be one of a very select number of 2010 shows for the band and among their first full-length sets since 2007.

Alison Krauss & Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas has been credited with raising the profile of bluegrass music around the world, bringing modern sophistication to the genre while respecting its traditions.

This 2010 performance marks the group’s 12th appearance at Telluride Bluegrass, beginning with their festival debut in 1989, and Douglas will be celebrating his 26th year on the Telluride stage.

Says Grammy-winning Union Station vocalist Dan Tyminski, “I have spent a lifetime going to festivals and can easily say that no other has the splendor of Telluride.”

Union station bassist Barry Bales agrees, reflecting on the significance of Telluride Bluegrass: “As an aspiring young musician growing up in East Tennessee, it was an almost unattainable goal to even attend the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. So it was truly a monumental moment in my life to experience the festival for the first time not from the audience, but on stage for one of my very first shows upon joining Alison almost 20 years ago.”

10 must have softwares for a home PC Posted By : Alison Deffenbaugh

Anti-Virus: An anti-virus is crucial as it allows your computer to run smoothly without crashing and burning. In this sense it is the anti-virus software that allows all other software to perform. Downloading a virus checker then should be your first port of call upon getting a new computer and you should also ensure to update it regularly. McAfee is an effective option.

Outside Lands Music Festival
Day 3 Photos & Top 3

Words by: Kayceman | Images by: Dave Vann

Outside Lands Music Festival :: Day 3 :: 08.30.09 :: Golden Gate Park :: San Francisco, CA

As temperatures dropped severely throughout the weekend, by the final day of Outside Lands it was chilly, foggy and windy. Those who call The Bay home were barely fazed with layers of clothing coming out of backpacks, but there were clearly some out-of-towners caught in t-shirts and shorts. With the Beastie Boys having to cancel their headlining slot, Tenacious D filled in somewhat admirably with a funny, shtick-heavy set that also included some rather impressive shredding from Kyle Gass, Jack Black and the impressive support cast of unknown rockers. In lieu of a proper, big name headliner, the rest of the bands on Sunday upped the ante with powerful sets across the board. The Top 3 that follows could have come in any order with no one band clearly sticking out and each rising to the occasion.

Kayceman’s Top 3 From Sunday

1. Alison Mosshart/The Dead Weather – I went to see Jack White and fell in love with Alison. Listen to The Kills and you know this chick can rock, but put her with Jackie White on a big stage and let the sticky sex drip all over you. Somehow balancing on the speaker monitors, Mosshart was a writhing beast, grinding and twisting as she channeled the primal rock gods in a mid-tempo Zeppelin manner. Jack proved plenty talented on the drums but really wowed the crowd when he took center stage on guitar to sing into one mic with Mosshart. This was stadium sized rock, all big, fuzzy and unforgiving. It’s a good thing the sun stayed away; this was The Dead Weather for sure.

2. Ween – Never a hard core fan, this set made me wonder what I’ve been missing. From popular hits like “Bananas and Blow” and “Roses Are Free” to bust outs like “Touch My Tooter” and “The Final Alarm” to a very drugged-out “Zoloft” and a wickedly dark, psychedelic “Buckingham Green,” this set had it all. But even more than Deaner‘s (Mickey Melchiondo) inspired guitar work that proved about as impressive as any guitarist all weekend (save for Omar Rodriguez Lopez), it was the tight arrangements and near perfect execution of the songs that really drove it home. When these freaks are on, clearly it is on! I won’t miss my next chance to get effed by Ween.

3. Band of Horses – Considering how heartwarming and feel good BoH was, it’s a testament to Ween and The Dead Weather that this set is down at the number three slot. Songs like “Is There A Ghost,” “Marry Song” and “Our Swords” poured off the stage, Ben Bridwell‘s reverb-laced voice washing over the packed meadow like a warm breeze. “General Specific” was a foot-stomping good time and Gram Parson’s “A Song For You” was simply gorgeous. But it was the emotionally-saturated combo of “The Funeral” and “Ode to LRC” that received the biggest crowd response, Bridwell’s exposed delivery drawing a few tears to the surface. Another striking set from a band that has truly found their country-rock indie-Americana sound.
