Sat Eye Candy: Professor Longhair

HAPPY FREAKIN’ BIRTHDAY, FESS!!!

As a college student eking out a living at long defunct Cymbaline Records in Santa Cruz, one of our regulars was New Age music superstar George Winston. His albums December and Winter Into Spring were the definition of textural piano bliss, and every jerk-water in a cardigan came in with their little yap dog to buy copies in the late 1980s. Given the character of his music one might assume the dude was majorly mellow but what Winston mainly came by to do was special order rare Japanese CDs of boogie woogie jazz and jump blues. And his main obsession was Professor Longhair, who stirred a hot coal fire inside George that warmed every damn employee up to the New Orleans great. We’d put on his records in the store and the way music flowed through his fingers, the way an 88 purred and kicked beneath his touch, well, it hit one like lightning and made you dance around like a puppet with tangled strings. And that sensation has never diminished for me, and I’m guessing Mr. Winston, too.

Born Henry Roeland Byrd in 1918, the man who became known as Professor Longhair, or just Fess for short, took what the other stride and jump pianists were doing and just made it weird. And just plain wonderful, too. There’s a crazed pleasure and simmering sense of possibility inside his signature numbers “Go to the Mardi Gras,” “Tipitina,” “No Buts – No Maybes” and “Big Chief.” But, open up his admittedly sparse recorded output – given that he started his career in 1948 and died in 1980 there should be more – and there’s all kinds of strange crags and wicked journeys to be found. Often joyful, there’s an angled difference to Fess’ playing and compositional sense that to this day sets him apart, though one picks up some of his peculiar frequencies in Marco Benevento, John Medeski and Brian Haas; not the New Orleans flavor (see Dr. John for that prescription) so much as his joie de vivre and in-the-moment ability to curve into unexpected spaces. He will always be associated and identified with his New Orleans focused material – and rightly so – but there’s so much more to Professor Longhair than Mardi Gras, and we cheat ourselves as listeners by limiting our perspective on one of the defining piano voices of the 20th century. To watch him in action was to see music itself come to life, flowing and playing through his entire body as it came into being. Such a beautiful sight.

Fess would have been 91-years-old if he were still with us today. I know for sure I miss him, and I betcha his piano does, too. Happy birthday, sir, the angels are gonna get a hell of a concert tonight. (Dennis Cook, JamBase Associate Editor)

Sundance Channel will launch the second season of its critically acclaimed music/talk original series “Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…” on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 10:00 p.m. et/pt with an episode featuring U2‘s Bono and The Edge. “Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…” combines the best elements of talk and music television and lets viewers in on intimate conversation and performances with host Costello and his guests, who range from legendary performers to promising new artists.

The series, executive produced by Sir Elton John, includes one-on-one interviews, unprecedented pairings and group discussions, as well as extraordinary performances, from impromptu “illustrative” moments to full band (and even multi-band) productions. Among the confirmed guests for the seven-part season are: Bono, The Edge, Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, Lyle Lovett, John Prine, Ron Sexsmith, Neko Case, Jesse Winchester, Ray LaMontagne, Nick Lowe, Levon Helm, Richard Thompson, and Allen Toussaint.

“Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…” is taped in front of a live audience at Harlem’s world famous Apollo Theater in New York City and The Masonic Temple in Toronto, Canada. The series will also air on CTV in Canada.

New Orleans is a city defined by its unique and colorful history. It’s for that reason that most tend to view the place as something of a musical museum while ignoring the town’s vibrant and innovative new music. In New Orleans, the hip hop at the heart of today’s culture emerged from an energetic, highly eroticized and occasionally gender-bending music called “bounce.” And the truth is, all the town’s seemingly disparate styles – jazz, brass bands and funk as well as the newer “bounce” influenced hip hop, are all intrinsically linked. There is a particular inclusiveness about the place, which connects both its people and their music. And now, for the first time ever, all these sounds have been combined on one original record. With Ya-Ka-May, long time NOLA residents, Galactic have made an album that reflects the city as they see it – blending all the town’s distinctive sounds in a way no band has before.

For Jerry Garcia, 1975 was a seminal year that found him splitting time between recording Blues for Allah with the Dead, directing The Grateful Dead Movie, and forming the Jerry Garcia Band – his long-running side project. JGB’s earliest days are the subject of a two-disc live collection recorded during that momentous year. THE JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 2: LET IT ROCK, JERRY GARCIA BAND, NOVEMBER 17 & 18, 1975, KEYSTONE BERKELEY will be available November 10 from Jerry Garcia Family/Rhino at physical retail outlets and at www.dead.net for a suggested list price of $19.98.

The Jerry Garcia Band – Garcia, his constant collaborator bassist John Kahn and drummer Ron Tutt – played its first show with Nicky Hopkins on piano in August 1975. The ultimate session player, Hopkins’ credits include work with The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Jefferson Airplane to name a very few. While Hopkins residency was brief with the Jerry Garcia Band, it played an important role in the group’s shift away from big jams toward song-oriented material.

In addition to being a brilliant songwriter himself, Garcia had a great ear for other people’s songs and the new band provided him an opportunity to explore others’ works. LET IT ROCK includes covers of Chuck Berry (“Let It Rock”), Little Milton (“That’s What Love Will Make You Do”) and Jimmy Cliff (“Sitting In Limbo”). It also features performances of Allen Toussaint’s “I’ll Take A Melody” and Hank Ballard’s “Tore Up Over You,” songs that would surface a few months later on Garcia’s Reflections (1976). In addition to other artists’ songs, the band dips briefly into the Dead canon for “Friend Of The Devil” and Garcia’s 1972 solo debut for “Sugaree.” Three Hopkins originals are featured as well, “Pig’s Boogie,” “Lady Sleeps,” and the curiously titled “Edward, The Mad Shirt Grinder,” a song Hopkins first performed with Quicksilver Messenger Service.

While it is not strictly speaking a complete show, THE JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 2 is sequenced to approximate a two-set club gig, highlighting performances recorded November 17 and 18, 1975, during a pair of intimate gigs at Keystone Berkeley in front of a hometown crowd. The shows demonstrate that this lineup was capable of collective improvisation on the same level as the Grateful Dead, says David Gans, host of the Grateful Dead Hour. “Everybody could play melody or rhythm, or both, at any time, flying in and out of formation and always in intimate relation to what the others were playing,” he writes in the collection’s liner notes.

Levon Helm:Electric Dirt

One of the great spirits of American music, Levon Helm, has returned with Electric Dirt (released June 30 on Vanguard Records), a stellar follow-up to 2007′s Grammy winning Dirt Farmer. Like Dirt Farmer, Helm’s new offering features a wide variety of cover tunes but this time the record showcases Helm’s return to songwriting on the bittersweet “Growin’ Trade.” The ballad, which he penned with former Bob Dylan guitarist Larry Campbell (who also produced the album), laments the plight of an American farmer who has been forced to turn his family’s cotton plantation into a pot farm in order to make ends meet. It’s a plight that is close to Helm’s heart as he grew up on a cotton farm in Arkansas in the 1940s and he’s immortalized it beautifully with this song.

From the get-go, the record shows that Helm’s still in fine form behind the kit and at the mic with a strong, horn-bolstered take on Garcia/Hunter’s legendary country shuffle “Tennessee Jed.” From there Helm and a top notch band of seasoned musicians launch into a guided tour of Southern musical history as elements of back porch blues, gospel and Dixieland seep into the arrangements of songs by the likes of The Staples Singers, The Stanley Brothers and Muddy Waters.

Though most of these arrangements were put together by Campbell, Helm renewed a partnership with another legendary musical name, Allen Toussaint, during the sessions for Electric Dirt. The pair had worked together back in the early ’70s when Toussaint was called into handle the horn arrangements for The Band’s 1971 New Year’s Eve concert (documented on Rock of Ages), and it’s clear he hasn’t lost a step either. His contributions to album closer “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free” and a rollicking take on Randy Newman’s “Kingfish” are two of the standout cuts on the album.

Helm’s warbly tenor may be a little shakier than it was 40 years ago but it’s every bit as heart-warming and soul-wrenching as it was in his days with The Band. Electric Dirt is a powerful album that adds to Helm’s already monumental legacy and further cements his place as a true American musical legend.
