AMD CEO: Economic Signs Encouraging

Speaking at a technology conference in New York, AMD President and CEO Dirk Meyer said he is getting encouraging feedback from customers and is optimistic about the last few months of 2009 and 2010. Meyer also talked about AMD technologies, such as the Â“CongoÂ” platform for ultralight notebooks, and the recent announcement of Globalfoundries buying Chartered as positive steps forward for the company as it struggles to get back to profitability.
– Advanced Micro Devices has plans for new PC and graphics offerings that will
help the chip maker take advantage of what officials say are encouraging signs
in the technology industry for later this year and into 2010.

AMD Spinoff Globalfoundries to Buy Chartered for $1.8B

Globalfoundries, which AMD spun off in March in a joint agreement with ATIC, is buying Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, the third-largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world. The $1.8 billion deal will create an entity that will compete with such rivals as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and United Microelectronics. The deal also will mean that Globalfoundries will expand its customer base beyond Advanced Micro Devices and STMicroelectronics to include Broadcom and Qualcomm.
– Globalfoundries is merging with Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing in a
move that will create a major rival to the currently dominant Taiwan-based
manufacturers.

Intel, AMD Watch x86 Chip Shipments Jump 10% in Q2

IDC reports x86 processor shipments increased 10 percent in the second quarter of 2009 compared with the previous quarter. Intel again dominated AMD in terms of market share, watching as its Atom processor shipments increased. However, IDC finds that demand for PCs has not returned yet.
– The good news for Intel, Advanced
Micro Devices and the rest of the x86 processor market is that chip
shipments increased 10 percent between the first quarter and the second quarter

Dell Workstation Features AMD ATI GPU

At the Siggraph 2009 show in New Orleans, Dell introduced its M6400 mobile workstation, which is powered by the ATI FirePro M7740 graphics accelerator from AMD. The announcements a day after HP unveiled configurations of its Z800 workstation that run on Nvidias Tesla GPUs, highlighting an increasing interest among workstation and HPC customers in systems running on graphics processing units.

AMD Spinoff GlobalFoundries Inks STMicroelectronics

A week after breaking ground on a new $4.2 billion manufacturing plant in upstate New York, GlobalFoundries signs a deal to manufacture products for STMicroelectronics. GlobalFoundries, which AMD spun off in March, will manufacture products that will go into wireless and handheld devices as well as consumer electronics.

AMD, Intel and Nvidia contributed to what Jon Peddie Research is describing as the best second quarter, quarter-to-quarter change in nine years. AMD showed the strongest turnaround, with a growth of 41.5 percent from the last quarter to this quarter. The researcher is predicting Â“a robust back-to-school season.Â”

AMD, coming out a somewhat disappointing second quarter, announced the shipment of the 500 millionth x86 processor during the companys 40 years in operation. To celebrate, AMD is running a contest in which customers can win one of four HP Pavilion notebooks. The announcement comes just days after AMD reported a $330 million loss, and just over a week after rival Intel posted strong second-quarter numbers.

Intel officials are appealing the European Commissions $1.45 billion fine for antitrust violations, saying European regulators ignored the realities of a competitive processor market. The EC claimed that Intel practices around rebates an discounts violated European antitrust regulations and harmed rival AMD as well as European consumers.

AMD posts another quarterly financial loss, but the results show some improvement over AMD’s performance from a year ago. While AMD executives did not offer details, they say they expect a better second half of 2009. AMD plans to focus on its new Opteron processors for servers, as well as on new notebook platforms.

AMD Fires Back at Facebook

Weeks after a Facebook executive criticized AMD and Intel, saying that Facebook engineers had not seen the expected gains in performance in the chip makers newest processors, AMD officials are speaking out. While agreeing that benchmark tests that bet-ter reflect real-world situations are needed, the AMD officials also said that the chips their company is producing are among the fastest and most energy efficient, and are good for the smallest business to the largest server farms.
