New heights

Ten years after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), Lori Schneider decided she wanted to scale the highest peak on every continent.

She achieved this last month by making it to the summit of the world’s most famous mountain, Mount Everest.

Climbing Mt Everest is a challenge for anyone – even if they are young and in the peak of health – but the 53-year-old from Wisconsin is the first person with MS ever to reach the summit.

Ms Schneider, an avid climber, first dreamed of climbing Everest 16 years ago.

But a diagnosis of MS in 1999 was a blow for the former school teacher.

When she first got the news, her initial reaction was to run, rather than climb.

"I ran away, I was fearful of what I thought I was losing in my life," she said.

"I didn’t want people feeling sorry for me. I was doing plenty of that for myself at that point, I was feeling like my physical life was over."

Diagnosis

Ms Schneider first noticed something was wrong when she woke up one morning with numbness in the leg and arm on one side of her body.

"I think the real hardship on Everest is maintaining a positive attitude for two months"

The condition progressed to the side of her face, and eventually both sides of her body.

Doctors initial thought she might have had a stroke or be suffering from brain cancer.

It took several months before she was correctly diagnosed.

After overcoming her initial fear and panic, she says the diagnosis actually empowered her to reach for her dreams.

"For 20 years I taught children: ‘Don’t be afraid, take a chance, try’, and when I was doing these climbs trying to climb the highest peak on each continent, I thought I’ll do them all but Everest, because that’s too hard for me."

"When I got diagnosed I thought: ‘Just don’t be afraid to try, do the things in your life that maybe you dreamed about’."

Her aspiration has not been without its costs. Following her dreams meant leaving behind a 20-year teaching career and a 22-year marriage.

Three years ago she climbed the highest peak in North America – Mount McKinley (also known by its native American name of Denali) in Alaska.

For those in the mountaineering know, it is considered the coldest mountain in the world with temperatures overnight capable of dropping to -50C.

After Everest, Asia’s highest peak, and Aconcagua, South America’s highest peak, it is the third highest of the so-called "Seven Summits".

After coming back down she started to loose some of her vision, another symptom of MS. But that did not deter her.

To climb Everest, the cost was financial, rather than physical – she used all her savings, sold her home and took out a loan.

"I’ve been very, very fortunate the last several years. My MS has been pretty stable and quiet in my system," she said.

"I think the real hardship on Everest is maintaining a positive attitude for two months."

The summit

Climbers of Everest face some of the most treacherous conditions imaginable; along with battling hypothermia, there is also altitude sickness, physical exhaustion, and the isolation of being up the mountain for so long.

But with the help of letters and photos of friends, family and supporters, she kept herself positive and after more than eight weeks, fighting through a blizzard, she made it to the top.

In achieving her goal, she has joined some of the world’s most accomplished climbers and bested many others.

"It was very surreal, you couldn’t see anything [because of the blizzard], so I couldn’t see the beauty that surrounded me."

"We had to rush down so fast, but I did get a chance to give my father a call and yell: ‘I made it, I made it’."

"It wasn’t until the next morning when I woke up in my tent after climbing for 17 hours the day before, and then all of the sudden I thought: ‘Oh my gosh, I just climbed Mt Everest yesterday!’."

But she says making it to the summit is just a bonus.

The real achievement, she says, is that in coming to terms with MS and the possibility that she may one day loose her mobility, she has been able to face down her fears.

"Who you are inside… that’s what’s important. That will always be there," she said.

"Whether my legs carry me up a mountain or not, I’m still who I am deep inside." </p

Obama wants to end African conflicts

US president to emphasise democratic goals for African countries during speech to Ghanaian parliament

The US is planning a dramatically more assertive policy in Africa, sometimes backed by a threat of force, to end conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria that are seen as among the principal obstacles to the continent’s revival.

Barack Obama is to address Ghana’s parliament tomorrow on his first visit to Africa as president with a speech that is expected to emphasise that the key to prosperity is democratic, accountable government. But an important part of the new administration’s policy will focus on ending key conflicts through more forceful diplomatic initiatives after years of drift by the Bush administration.

The White House is shortly to appoint a special envoy to central Africa with a brief to tackle a web of conflicts that have afflicted eastern Congo for 15 years,and destabilised the region, in the belief that the success or failure of one of the continent’s largest countries will decide central Africa’s future.

A senior administration source said that the US believes the primary problem is the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), which is led by men wanted for the 1994 genocide of Rwanda’s Tutsis who fled to Congo and controls swaths of territory close to Rwanda’s border.

The source said that the priority will be to break the FDLR leadership with a mix of diplomatic pressure, including the prospect of war crimes trials, backed by the establishment of “a more professional force” to replace the ill-trained troops serving in the UN largest peacekeeping mission who have failed to contain the conflict. However, the source said that there is a belief that the threat may be enough to force the FDLR to give up the fight. He said that the make-up of such a force is unresolved.

The initiative will also focus on confronting the Lords Resistance Army, a particularly brutal Ugandan rebel group also based in Congo. But the source said that broader pacification will require more interventionist diplomacy to press other countries such as Rwanda and Uganda that contribute to the destabilisation to recognise that their security is intertwined with Congo’s success.

The administration is also eyeing the continuing violent upheaval in the Niger Delta which is a major source of America’s oil imports amid deep scepticism over the capabilities of President Umaru Yar’Adua who is seen as weak and indecisive as his country fragments.

The conflict is deepening with several rebel groups and parts of the military now acting as warlords and some major oil companies warning that they are considering pulling out of the region altogether.

But the emphasis there is likely to remain firmly diplomatic as the US presses Yar’Adua to address seriously the issues of impoverishment, environmental devastation and endemic corruption that have alienated people in the delta and given rise to rebel groups and armed gangs that now control large parts of the region.

However there are fears that US intervention could result in the further militarisation of the continent. Confronting the FDLR is likely to draw in the US Africa Command (Africom) which is increasingly involved in conflicts on the continent, including overseeing a botched Ugandan attack on LRA rebels in Congo.

The US military is also now supplying weapons to the fragile government in Somalia as it tries to stave off Islamist insurgents. The Americans also allied themselves closely with Ethiopia’s repressive regime during its attack on Somalia.

Daniel Volman, director of the African Security Research Institute, one of three dozen organisations which wrote an open letter to Obama urging him to reverse the militarisation of US policy in Africa, said Africom’s growing role will further destabilise the continent.

“It encourages governments to rely on the use of force to deal with internal problems, to avoid democracy, to avoid addressing the internal issues these African countries face,” he said.

“The US is now engaged in a major new military project in Somalia, providing arms and ammunition to the Somali government there, encouraging countries like Burundi and Rwanda which have peacekeeping forces there to conduct military training so we don’t send to have our own troops there, all of which encourages that government to seek a military solution instead of developing a political solution to the kind of problems that exist.”

There remain deep divisions over other aspects of Africa policy, especially Darfur. Before his election, Obama promised strong action against the Sudanese regime but the state department is at odds with itself on the crisis. The US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, believes the Khartoum leadership is not to be trusted and wants a hard line taken with Sudan but others argue that the conflict has been over simplified and that it is in any case largely over.

However, when Obama addresses Ghana’s parliament tomorrow, his focus will be on democratisation as the path to Africa’s revival.

“This isn’t some abstract notion that we’re trying to impose upon Africa,” he told allAfrica.com. “There is a very practical pragmatic consequence to political instability and corruption when it comes to whether people can feed their families, educate their children. And we think that the African continent is a place of extraordinary promise as well as challenges. We’re not going to be able to fulfil those promises unless we see better governance.”

GM reborn after 40 bankruptcy days

‘Business as usual is over at GM,’ said CEO Fritz Henderson

America’s biggest carmaker, General Motors, won a second chance to prove itself as a profitable motor manufacturer today as it emerged from bankruptcy at lightning speed after a remarkably swift, smooth financial restructuring.

After just 40 days under court-supervised protection from its creditors, GM was resurrected as a solvent business shortly after 6.30am when lawyers, completing an all-night paperwork session, signed over its factories, stocks, equipment and intellectual property to a new entity controlled by the US government.

GM’s chief executive, Fritz Henderson, pledged to pay back $50bn (£30.9bn) of public loans well in advance of a deadline of 2015 and promised that the streamlined company would be a nimbler, less bureaucratic and more decisive organisation. GM will focus on four vehicle brands – Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.

“Business as usual is over at GM,” said Henderson at a press conference in Detroit. “Today, we take the intensity, decisiveness and speed of the past several months and transfer it from the triage of the bankruptcy process to the creation and operation of a new General Motors.”

He continued: “We recognise that we’ve been given a rare second chance at GM, and we are very grateful for that. And we appreciate the fact that we now have the tools to get the job done.”

The US government owns 60.8% of the new GM, while Canada’s government holds 11.7% and a union-controlled pension fund has 17.5%. Creditors of the old company, who were owed $27bn (£16.67), were compensated with a stake of just 10% to the dismay of Wall Street bondholders who fought a short, unsuccessful battle for a larger slice.

President Obama had initially predicted that reforming GM would take 60 to 90 days. But creditors’ objections were decisively thrown out by a New York bankruptcy judge, Robert Gerber, in a resounding win for the administration’s auto restructuring taskforce.

“This is a major victory for the Obama administration over Wall Street,” said Aaron Bragman, a motor industry analyst at IHS Global Insight in Detroit. “The government really put the screws on bondholders and enforced a deal on them that it thought was suitable.”

After swapping loans for equity, the new GM has debt of $48bn (£29.6bn), compared to the $170bn (£105bn) burden when it filed for chapter 11 protection. But the transformation has been painful for thousands of employees, parts suppliers and car dealers.

Once cutbacks are complete in 2011, GM is likely to have just 38,000 blue-collar factory workers in the US, compared to 113,000 three years ago. The number of GM plants will fall from 47 to 31 and, through a clear-out of senior management, GM’s executive team will shrink by 35%.

The firm, which was once the largest corporation in America, is in the process of selling international names including Saab, Vauxhall, Opel and Hummer as part of its downsizing. In Britain, the decision to offload GM’s European operations has cast a cloud of uncertainty over 5,500 jobs at Vauxhall factories in Luton and Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

Henderson said GM’s emergence from the bankruptcy courts would allow “every employee, including me, to get back to the business of designing, building and selling great cars and trucks”.

He insisted that GM could shake off its reputation for uninspirational designs and slow-moving bureaucracy.

“Einstein’s definition of insane is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results,” said Henderson. “We know we have to change.”

Among GM’s priorities will be the development of environmentally-friendly vehicles such as the electrically powered GM Volt, which is due to be launched by the end of next year. GM executives have even reportedly mulled changing the company’s distinctive blue logo to a green hue, although Henderson said he did not plan to do this.

New initiatives include a joint venture with the website eBay to explore ways of auctioning cars online, and a forum called ‘Ask Fritz’ in which customers will be able to share suggestions with the chief executive.

But financial experts warned that the company faces challenges in winning back the trust of customers and the financial community.

“The legacy costs are gone. The challenge in the future is how to approach a marketplace that has been burned by GM,” said Pete Hastings, a credit analyst at Morgan Keegan.

Along with its rival Chrysler which also recently went through bankruptcy, GM has been hit by the worst slump in US vehicle sales since the second world war. The company has struggled to cope with high petrol prices, a change in tastes towards smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles and fierce competition from Asian rivals. It has lost its title as the world’s leading carmaker to Japan’s Toyota.

A new chairman, former AT&T boss Edward Whitacre, will preside over GM’s board. He told reporters: “For 100 years, General Motors was among the world’s greatest companies. It deserves to be there again and it will be there again.”

AMERICA and other countries still have to fine-tune their cyber-defences to distinguish mere nuisances from real menaces. That, rather than any revelations about fiendish North Korean cyber-warfare, seems to be the upshot of the latest reported cyber-attack on South Korean and American websites.

Initially, it was reported that this was the first series of attacks to hit government websites in several countries simultaneously. Officials in both Seoul and Washington, DC, said they were suffering “distributed denial of service” overload (known as DDOS in geekspeak). In these a computer is overwhelmed with bogus requests for a response sent from infected computers. American targets included sites at the Treasury, the Secret Service, and the Transportation Department; the South Korean list included the Defence Ministry, the National Assembly, the presidential Blue House and some banks. The timing felt eerie: attacks began on July 4th, Independence Day. …

The range anxiety gamble

This looks like a week in which electric cars are going to be very much in the news – in part due to government initiatives on both sides of the Atlantic. And there are plenty of announcements being made by the OEMs to coincide with that. Nissan’s yesterday about manufacturing electric plug-in vehicles – not hybrids – in the US is particularly intriguing.


It’s the latest news from Nissan on this subject and follows on from Carlos Ghosn’s consistently stated view that electric cars represent the long-term future for the automotive industry. He has perhaps stood out among car firm bosses as a real believer in electric drive technology and the opportunity presented – and on a business planning horizon that he earnestly believes is with us now. Working with partners like Project Better Place has demonstrated a serious intent to grapple with things like infrastructure, too.


At first sight, 100,000 units a year of production in the US sounds pretty ambitious. And maybe it is, given that we’re talking about electric drive vehicles that don’t come with a back-up gasoline engine. That raises the ‘range anxiety’ question alongside consumer acceptance of frequent battery charging rather than occasionally filling the tank with the black stuff.


How far can these cars really go on a single charge? (Nissan says the car will offer 100 miles of range, but what if the heater is on and there are hills to climb…); how often does it need charging?; how much will that cost me and just how robust is the battery? (And the truly environmentally aware may even ask how the juice coming out of the power socket was generated…but I suspect that question will be overlooked or fudged in the minds of many.)


Nissan will have to come up with a very good product to get initial consumer acceptance of this new technology. And – leaving aside the considerable product development and technology issues ahead – I’m sure there is a lot of discussion still to happen concerning the precise business model, too (like the retail price and how battery leasing might work in practice).


But that’s 100,000 units in a passenger vehicle market of almost 16m units (or wherever we are on the recovery path by 2012, when Nissan plans the start of US production). It’s way under a 1% share. Nissan can target sales in US cities where it thinks the car will sell.


Do Americans buy small, more energy-efficient cars? They are now buying more of them – look at the success of Smart’s Fortwo. And Nissan can be cute and look to market the car in places where city authorities are suddenly looking for more EV solutions (like Baltimore, for example).


Market analysts can argue about how quickly US market segmentation will shift, but there is a consensus that smaller and more energy-efficient vehicles will be growing in sales. Electric drive vehicles in various formats will clearly be a part of that broader trend, though it is far from clear exactly where the numbers will be and on what timescale (and the internal combustion engine is doing much to make itself more efficient).


But which way is the oil price wind blowing? I wouldn’t mind betting that in 2012, when global economic recovery is really kicking in, the price of a barrel will be a lot higher than today. That could provide a very fair wind to both hybrids and pure-electrics.


Is range anxiety really a big issue? Incremental improvements are helping, but the issue is not going away. Having said that, there is a point at which range becomes acceptable for many who would consider such a car primarily for relatively low-mileage daily use – the commute to the office, say.


And with that pattern of usage, range anxiety may not be as big an issue in America as in Europe because American households have more multi-vehicle ownership than Europe does.


Whereas a pure EV might be severely limiting in Western Europe (asking the single car household’s sole vehicle to do many jobs for the lowest cost explains why the C-segment is Europe’s largest – cars like the Volkswagen Golf are fine around town and for motorway cruising) US households are perhaps more likely to have a larger vehicle available for longer journeys. ‘I use the EV every day, but the F-150 is just great for the weekends.’


Ghosn is taking a gamble though, that he can lead investment in electric vehicles for ‘mass transportation’ and steal a march on rivals, who are playing much safer with hybrids and ‘range extenders’ (like the Volt) that deal with range anxiety up front. And it’s a pan-global strategy to spread the technology investment across as many units as possible under the Renault and Nissan brands. Later on, when scale economies permit, maybe a viable low-cost ‘Logan-style’ electric car can be developed for price-sensitive emerging markets – which will likely not be figuring too much early on.


If Ghosn gets it right, the EV push could leave Renault-Nissan as one of the most powerful groups in the global auto industry for a generation. But it could be an expensive drag on profitability at a time when the industry’s worst performers come under increasing pressure to cut capacity still further.


It’s a gamble. And Ghosn is perhaps a brave man. But you wouldn’t expect him to have a vision on where the industry is headed and not give it his best shot would you?

Some folks are born wise, and John Fogerty is surely one of them. Two years on from the Summer of Love, Fogerty could see which way the wind was blowing, his young ears able to “hear the voice of rage and ruin.” The Vietnam War shuddered a half a world away, entering U.S. living rooms every night on the news, while corporate culture had already absorbed the trappings of the ’60s youth revolution, diluting a legitimate social movement into a series of largely empty, marketable symbols (“”Is that a real poncho? I mean is that a Mexican poncho or is that a Sears poncho?”). Fogerty picked up on this sharp dip in general hope, addressing the nostalgia already settling into America’s mindset – not just for some fictitious bygone time but for what had transpired only recently – a dynamic that persists in even more pronounced form today. The first words of Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s third album, Green River are, “Well, take me back down where cool water flows/ Let me remember things I love.” From there he swiftly introduces us to the hangman’s rope and announces, “You’re gonna find the world is smould’rin’.”

CCR’s second album in a year that would ultimately see them release three classics is a sharp shock to the system. For all of its ’50s inspired bounce, the waters in their river are cloudy and tangled with weeds and bodies. Like the bluesmen and folk heroes that fueled Fogerty’s pen, his songs here invite mindless sing-alongs, seeming jubilant yet ever-touched by something far darker. The quintessential example in the Creedence catalog is “Bad Moon Rising, ” which has been reduced to a backdrop for film and television, just another piece of the general cultural landscape, but is nothing less than a scathing gospel warning, barking, “Hope you got your things together/ Hope you are quite prepared to die/ Looks like we’re in for nasty weather/ One eye is taken for an eye.” Creedence isn’t screwing around on this album, and as baldly enjoyable as the music is (and it is a freakin’ ball that’ll have you smacking the ceiling of your hoopdie like El Duderino) this is largely serious business, as heavy and truthful as Robert Johnson, Leadbelly or Bob Dylan.

It does not hurt that the band is ablaze on every cut. The myth goes that this is John’s show and the rest are merely players, but no matter the brilliance of the playwright you’re going to have an empty house if there’s no one there to execute the script. Stu Cook (bass), Doug Clifford (drums) and John’s brother Tom Fogerty (rhythm guitar) are jook joint mean and Hamburg underground tight, a party band extraordinaire with steam rising from their pores. John Fogerty’s lead guitar and ruthless lead vocals are indeed the sharp point of their phalanx but the muscle behind it comes from Tom, Stu and Doug. The sad evidence of this is how none of them ever again achieved a fraction of the mojo harnessed during CCR’s five-year existence. Green River presents the combo at their most cohesive, where each aspect feeds the others to create one of the most appealing, robust sounds in the history of rock. The conversation between instruments generates a density and immediacy that defies age – a model for anyone seeking a “timeless” quality to their music.

And oh what tunes! The proto-punk of “Commotion,” the bent knee cry for connectivity in “Wrote A Song For Everyone,” the gleeful foreboding of “Tombstone Shadow,” the ennui and impotence of “Lodi,” the urge for going inside “Cross-Tie Walker” and the shiver-inducing prognostication of “Bad Moon Rising” and “Sinister Purpose” – each number a lustily attacked marvel that culminates in a “Fuck it, let’s party” vibe with a cover of jump blues standard “The Night Time Is The Right Time.” Throwing jagged stones at “pharaohs” and the self-deluded, this song cycle is simultaneously delightful and harrowing. In sequencing, execution and insight, Green River is a tough one to beat in any era, even one as rich as the late 1960s.
