Singapore Air net falls on cargo fines, lags analyst estimates

Singapore Airlines, the world’s second-largest carrier by market value, reported a 29% drop in third-quarter profit after charges related to antitrust cargo fines.

Net income fell to $288.3 million in the three months ended December from $404 million, a year earlier, the carrier said in a statement to the Singapore stock exchange today. Profit was expected to be $299 million, based on the average of six analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Sales rose 12% to $3.84 billion. Singapore Air said it made a provision for $199 million toward the fine.

Australian analyst Whit Mason says that CoE investigator Dick Marty’s report shows that the highest Priština officials were above the law thanks to the U.S.

According to the BBC, Mason said that the U.S. did not consciously support the crimes in Kosovo and did not wish to see it remain a ‘banditocracy,’ but it was what their policy in Kosovo led to, by trying to establish stability without changing the situation in the field.

Noble (N21.SG) is down 0.5% at $2.06, unmoved by a Brazilian media report that Noble will buy 2 mills from Grupo Cerradinho for around US$941 million ($1.2 billion).

“There isn’t much of a reaction in the market due to a few reasons. The valuation isn’t out, and without that it’s all just an abstract thing. But my view is that the chances of it being earnings accretive are quite high,” says an analyst at a local brokerage.

Noble off 0.5%; Brazil mill price key issue: Analyst

Noble Group (N21.SG) is down 0.5% at $2.06 vs the STI’s 0.3% rise in a muted reaction to a Brazilian media report that Noble will acquire 2 mills belonging to ethanol producer Grupo Cerradinho for BRL1.6 billion (around US$1.2 billion).

The report says Noble will pay BRL600 million in cash and assume BRL1 billion of debt. “Sugar is a very good place to be from a long term perspective,” says an analyst.
