Windows 7 Will Push Tech Refresh In 2010, Says Analyst

Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 7 operating system could impel a massive tech refresh for businesses, a new research report suggests, as the enterprise and SMBs (small- to medium-sized businesses) purchase new hardware in order to more easily upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. – Some of the Palm Pres information-collecting practices are being called into question, after application developer Joey Hess wrote on his blog Aug. 12 that hed taken a closer look at his Pres WebOS and realized it was sending his GPS coordinates and other information, such as which applications he…

12 Reasons Why Unix Won’t Disappear Any Time Soon (and 3 Reasons It Might)

Oracle’s $7.4 acquisition of Sun Microsystems may be raising as many questions as it answered, not the least of which is, what will the software giant do with Sun’s extensive server portfolio? And what Oracle does with Sun’s UltraSPARC line of servers could have an impact on Solaris’ future. Sun’s Unix OS may be expanding its reach into the x86 server space, through deals with Dell, Hewlett-Packard and IBM, but it has a major presence in Sun’s UltraSPARC server customer base. The Oracle-Sun deal raises the same questions many in the industry have had about the future of Unix, particularly given the continued rapid growth of x86 server sales and the increasingly Unix-like workloads that those less-expensive systems can carry. However, while there may be some questions about Unix’s long-term viability, there are plenty of reasons to expect that the operating system will be around for years to come. (Many thanks should go to IDC analyst Jean Bozman, Pund-IT Research analyst Charles King and Sageza Group analyst Clay Ryder for their contributions to the list.)

Is Green IT Dead

While most companies have been forced to temporarily turn their backs on green IT projects, there is some good news – both for cash-strapped enterprise IT departments and the planet, according to Greg Schultz, senior analyst for StorageIO and author of The Green and Virtual Data Center. In this video interview, Schultz tells Ziff-Davis Enterprise that, In these tight economic times, organizations. . .are realizing that they can, in fact, become more green and environmentally friendly by becoming more economically efficient and productive. Literally by shifting and addressing the business issues, becoming more efficient and more focused…green gets funded for free.

Apple Revenue Exceeds Analyst Expectations, iPhone and Mac Sales Up

Apple reports quarterly profits and revenue exceeding Wall Street analyst predictions, and says both iPhones and Macs experienced year-over-year growth in sales despite the economy. Apple revenue rose to $8.34 billion for the quarter ending June 27, the company reports. However, Apple saw the sales of iPods dip, a situation that Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer attributes to market self-cannibalization thanks to the iPhone and iPod Touch.
– Apple
saw robust revenue and profits for the quarter ended June 27 and a massive jump
in iPhone sales, even as sales of its signature product, the iPod, declined by

Microsoft Q4 Results Will Highlight Need for Windows 7

Microsoft’s earnings are forecast to meet or exceed analyst predictions, but to be lower than the numbers it posted a year ago. In the midst of a global recession, Microsoft has faced declines in revenue from core divisions as the worldwide market for PCs evaporates, and it faces increased competition from Google, Apple and other IT giants. Microsoft is hoping that the refresh of its flagship products, including Windows 7 and Office 2010, will boost its fortunes despite the economic environment.
– Microsoft’s
earnings call on July 23 may not be the happiest for investors, as the company
continues to battle considerable economic headwinds and increased competition,
but it could highlight more than ever the need for its upcoming operating
system, Windows 7, to be a considerable hit.

Dell Plans to Move Deeper into Data Center

At the annual Dell analyst day, Dell executives say the company is looking to change its product mix, moving more upstream into the data center with a solutions-based approach and away from its heavy reliance on PC sales. The executives, including CEO Michael Dell, say this will be accomplished through a combination of targeted acquisitions, partnerships and organic growth. However, while they say the move away from reliance on PCs is key, it is unclear how easy such a move will be, given that PCs still account for about half of Dell’s revenues. Dell also says the company won’t offer an all-in-one data center solution, as Cisco and HP have.
– Dell is going to continue moving away from its PC roots and deeper into
bigger and higher-margin areas, particularly services and the data centers of
large enterprises.
At Dell’s annual analyst day in Austin, Texas,
on July 14, CEO Michael Dell and other
executives talked about their desire to …
