Bassist Johnny Grubb Joins Emmitt-Nershi Band

FORMER RAILROAD EARTH BASSIST FILLS VACANT SLOT

Emmitt-Nershi Band

With Tyler Grant recently announcing his departure from the Emmitt-Nershi Band, fans have
been anxiously awaiting
the announcement of the new bass player for the band. Today, it has been announced that Johnny Grubb
of Railroad Earth will be filling the
spot. Read Johnny’s official message below.

“Hello, World! Rather than make someone else come up with an announcement for who the new bassist will be, I
thought I’d try to follow in Tyler’s gracious footsteps and do it myself.

My name is Johnny Grubb. I went to school at Appalachian State University and saw Leftover Salmon
many, many times my first couple of years there. After ASU, I spent a good year rolling burritos, washing dishes and
playing bluegrass in my hometown of Atlanta before serendipitously running into John Skehan of Railroad Earth one
night at a gig of ours. They just happened to be on the lookout for a new bassist and long story short, I spent 7
years in that band, playing several metric tons of great music and meeting lots of great folks all over the
country.

One of the folks I met and had the good fortune of playing with on many occasions was Mr. Billy Nershi. RRE was
signed to SCI Fidelity Records for a number of years and we got to be friends with a bunch of the SCI/Mad House
folks in time. RRE always was and still is a full-time commitment. I just couldn’t keep it up with the birth of my
second boy last January, so I bowed out a year ago and spent this past year getting a web development consultancy
off the ground, getting to know the virtues and vices of the various open source software scenes out there and being
home with my wife and boys for the first time ever. The itch to play some bass didn’t come back until just a few
months ago after getting into the most recent Larry Keel and Stringduster’s CDs.

In any event, I cruised by this website last month to see what they were working with from a technical standpoint.
The meaning of Tyler’s announcement that he was leaving didn’t really hit me until the next day, at least not the part
where I should give Billy a call and see who they have lined up. I wasn’t looking for another full-time gig, nor to be
in another rock band per se, so after speaking with Billy and Drew it seemed like the parameters were pretty well
lined up for everybody and here I am!

Just to put a bow on top of everything, I met Andy years ago when he was with Larry Keel and didn’t find out until
the last few weeks that he was a member of the Broke Mountain Bluegrass band with Travis from the Infamous
Stringdusters and my good friend Anders from Greensky Bluegrass. It’s nice to be a part of this small world and I
want to thank my new bandmates for having me aboard. I will see you all soon.”

Anders Osborne Signs to Alligator

Alligator Records Signs Anders Osborne

Anders Osborne

Alligator Records has announced the signing of award-winning guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Anders Osborne.

Osborne’s Alligator Records debut album, American Patchwork, is a moving collection of soul-baring roots rock, blues and ballads. Many of the songs on American Patchwork deal with healing and redemption, spirituality and acceptance.

Osborne and friend Stanton Moore (Galactic) produced the album, with co-production by Pepper Keenan (of Down).

According to Osborne, “This is the healing, the patching back together, of a man scattered to the wind, broken and in pieces. The rebuilding of my home, a city under water and in ruins, friends lost, my community in disarray, all carefully patched and made whole again by the power of my America, and its endless source of inspiration to me. This is my American patchwork.”

Since 1995 Osborne has released a series of albums for major and independent labels. His music mixes blues, soul, funk and R&B into a signature sound and style. Two songs co-written by Osborne appear on blues great Keb Mo’s Grammy-winning 1999 release, Slow Down. Osborne’s compositions have been covered by artists as diverse as Brad Paisley, Tab Benoit, Jonny Lang and Kim Carnes. Country superstar Tim McGraw scored a #1 hit with Anders’ song Watch The Wind Blow.

Osborne was born in Sweden in 1966. His father was a professional jazz musician and, at an early age, Anders began playing guitar and discovering the musical power of the blues and the lyrical depth of songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Jackson Browne. At 16, he was traveling across Europe, North Africa, Asia and the Middle East, earning money by performing at every opportunity. His grandfather, a sailor, had often told him vivid stories of New Orleans, so when he arrived there in 1985, he felt right at home. He effortlessly incorporated the sounds of New Orleans into his own music, and the city quickly became a large part of his soul.

In April Osborne will play three times at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (and make many more area appearances during the festival period), followed by a six-week tour of the U.S. on a double bill with the Stanton Moore Trio. With a new label, a new recording, and a new appreciation of life itself, Anders Osborne is ready to move forward. As a youth he traveled the globe before settling in New Orleans. Now, as a proud American, he’ll travel from New Orleans, bringing his powerful original songs and soulful, bluesy, rock-fueled music to destinations all over the world.

Anders Osborne tour dates available here.

Only in New Orleans | 01.28 – 02.02

Only in New Orleans.

George Porter Jr. :: 01.28 :: New Orleans, LA

You’ve probably heard that expression before. Think back. Was it during Jazz Fest, Mardi Gras, maybe French Quarter Fest? I’m going to change that to, “All the time in New Orleans.” In these economically challenging days, you can pick a long weekend, pay a lot less, and still have many “only in New Orleans” moments. That’s what I did January 28 through February 2, 2010. Taking advantage of lower hotel rates and airfares during this “off” season before Mardi Gras, I arrived at the Dauphine Orleans in the French Quarter, hit the Redfish Grill for some great gumbo (no reservation needed), then headed to the world famous Maple Leaf to see the George Porter Jr. Trio. This weekly show stars the former Meter man with a revolving cast of guests. This night it was sax player Khris Royal and young gun guitar player Dan Abel, both from the New Orleans funk band Groovesect, and drummer Terrence Houston. To see Porter in this intimate environment allowed lucky patrons to get right up close to absorb the funky bass lines of this American treasure. No line at the bar, room to move on the floor, and New Orleans funk served by one of the players that helped write the recipe.

Friday

Rolled out around 1 p.m. to my favorite bar in the French Quarter, Yo Mamma’s on St. Peter near Bourbon. Boiled crawfish for breakfast? I had two orders. Again, there were no lines to get in and a seat at the bar. On the walk back to the hotel in the rain I heard a voice and accordion that stopped me in my tracks. Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers were kicking out their brand of high energy zydeco, so I just hung out at the Krazy Korner ’til the rain stopped. I got a spot in front of washboard player Alex MacDonald and I didn’t mind taking up a barstool for my camera bag. The place was reasonably crowded but not packed.

Anders Osborne :: 01.29 :: New Orleans, LA

The rain finally stopped and I headed out to the new Rock ‘n’ Bowl (no steps!) to catch Anders Osborne. The Rock ‘n’ Bowl has a real local feel to it, with families bowling and a hula hoop contest before the show that brought a smile to my face. Owner John Blancher led the crowd in Super Bowl chants that belong to the people of New Orleans and not the National Football League. I could feel the excitement these fans feel for their team. Osborne played a killer set with a trio featuring drums and a sousaphone.

I could easily have stayed for the entire show and would have if this had been in any other town, but this is New Orleans. Off I went to Tipitina’s to see The Radiators‘ 32nd anniversary show. For 32 years these New Orleans legends have been offering up a gumbo of rock, blues, funk, and folk music. They have played with the early New Orleans legends Professor Longhair and James Booker, and have held the closing spot at Jazz Fest for many years. I have seen the Rads many times at big festivals, but here they were playing for a mostly hometown crowd with room to dance.

Saturday

Woke up late and got ready for the Krewe De Vieux Mardi Gras Parade. Mardi Gras is a long celebration and Fat Tuesday was still two weeks away. The parade was led by Dr. John. My plan afterwards was to go check out Kermit Ruffins at the Rock N’ Bowl, but the realities of time and space compounded by the party at the Mardi Gras parade, well, it was just out of my hands. As Anders says, sometimes you just have to let the old man steer.

I’m a fishhead, so it was back to Tip’s for more Radiation, where I was rewarded with a kick ass second set. These guys can bring it, plain and simple. Congratulations to Frank, Reggie, Dave, Camille and Ed for 32 years of fishhead music.

Sunday

Preservation Hall :: 02.02 :: New Orleans, LA

I was going to take Sunday off and just chill in the Quarter, but I saw Dan Abel and he told me Groovesect was playing a small place on Jefferson Davis Highway called the Bayou Beer Garden. As it turns out it was a birthday party for drummer Colin Davis‘ girlfriend and I got to go all because we had talked music at the Maple Leaf on Thursday. Now, I’m not saying you’re always going to get invited to parties, but most New Orleans musicians are accessible and like to meet the people who support live music.

Monday

Got up early and went to Cafe Du Monde for a cafe latte and beignets. Bloody Mary at the Gazebo, and what do you know? A good band was playing for tips. Stayed for one more drink, just taking in the French Quarter. By 5 p.m. I was wondering what to do till Papa Grows Funk at the Leaf that night. Lovely Renee, my bartender at Yo Mamma’s, suggested I go across the street to Preservation Hall. What I found there was straight up Dixieland jazz played by musicians carrying on a way of life that is found only in New Orleans.

Back to the Maple Leaf for Papa Grows Funk, or should I say Momma Grows Funk. Sitting in for the newly married John Gros was Keiko Matsui. A very good piano/B3 player, she wailed. Of course, she had help from June, Jason, Jelly Bean, and Marc. Gros finally showed up as the band teased “The Wedding March.” The band and the audience had a good laugh, then got down to business. The funk was flying, and it seems married life is treating Gros well.

So, there you have it, folks. Five nights, eight shows, and a Mardi Gras parade, without one complaint about crowds, overpriced rooms, not being able to get a cab, not being able to get a beer and then get your spot back – none of it. Only in New Orleans.

Telluride Blues & Brews | 09.18-09.20 | CO

16th Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival :: 09.18.09 – 09.20.09 :: Telluride Town Park :: Telluride, CO

The calendar turned to fall and baseball is heading into the playoff push, so it must be time for Blues & Brews. Nestled beneath the mountains that surround Telluride Colorado, Town Park provides one of the most beautiful settings I’ve ever seen live music in. Celebrating its 16th year, the festival always attracts a great mix of not only blues but also funk, gospel, R&B and a little New Orleans flavor, with style each spread across generations. In addition you have more than 50 of the country’s top microbreweries competing for your taste buds during the Grand Tasting on Saturday. To say, “A great time is had by all,” is an understatement.

One of my favorite aspects of any festival is the chance to catch new artists that you’ve never seen or heard before. This year my favorite new band was Jason Ricci & New Blood. Lead vocalist and harmonica player Ricci incorporates the sounds of older blues masters as well as exploring newer sounds pioneered by John Popper. Ricci and his band played both the Thursday night Bal de Maison (the annual opening night show) at the Fly Me To The Moon Saloon as well as a main stage set on Friday. Other bands that I really enjoyed for the first time were Otis Taylor’s African Orchestra and NYC’s own London Souls. London Souls are a power trio in the tradition of Cream and the James Gang and they tore up The Fly Me To The Moon on Friday night. Also on Friday night Lukas Nelson & The Promise of the Real brought their country rock to the Sheraton Opera House. Lukas the son of Willie, shares his Dad’s rich voice.

Though I’ve seen them each many times, what I was most looking forward to was Anders Osborne and Buddy Guy, both playing on the main stage on Saturday. While their styles vary greatly, what they share is a sense that every ounce of their being goes into their playing. Anders nighttime show at the Sheraton Opera House was the most talked about set of the weekend. His band, featuring Kirk Joseph on Sousaphone and Simon Lott on drums, was super tight as they played several new Osborne compositions.
Once again the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival delivered sights and sounds that could only be found in such a special place. See you next year!

“Small NATO force to remain in Kosovo”

Newly-appointed NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that KFOR should be reduced to a small reaction force. “That is, that all of us leave Kosovo together” by the end of his term as the head of the Atlantic alliance, he was quoted as saying in Brussels on Monday.

US ‘waterboarding’ row rekindled

Fresh claims have emerged that a key al-Qaeda suspect was waterboarded before the Bush government lawyers issued written authorisation to do so.

A former CIA agent has told the BBC that Abu Zubaydah was waterboarded by the CIA in May or June 2002.

The date was provided by former CIA agent John Kiriakou. The practice was sanctioned in written memos by Bush administration lawyers in August 2002.

The CIA says waterboarding did not take place before August 2002.

Officials have refused to tell the BBC when it did occur.

Legal memos

Mr Kiriakou led the CIA team that captured Abu Zubaydah in Pakistan on 28 March 2002, and was the first to speak to the badly injured captive before returning to the US.

Abu Zubaydah

There he monitored the internal communications that came in (cable traffic) on Abu Zubaydah’s interrogation at a secret CIA prison from the organisation’s headquarters in Virginia.

Asked by the BBC’s Panorama programme when the waterboarding phase of the interrogation began, Mr Kiriakou said: "That would have been at the very end of May or the very beginning of June 2002."

The key legal advice by Bush administration lawyers that deemed it acceptable was not written until August 2002.

Mr Kiriakou said he had information that by early summer, 2002, President Bush had given his written approval for the use of waterboarding.

The BBC could not corroborate Mr Kiriakou’s assertions independently. The date of Abu Zubaydah’s waterboarding remains a closely guarded secret.

Mr Kiriakou has been criticised in the past for downplaying the extent of the waterboarding and emphasising its efficacy.

Torture redefined

Waterboarding had long been treated as torture under American law – and torture is illegal under both American and international law.

President George W Bush’s administration have steadily maintained that they did not break the law because they received legal advice which determined that waterboarding and other harsh techniques were not torture.

"Simply having a lawyer say that something is okay is not a defence, or is not much of a defence anyway"

Chris Anders
American Civil Liberties Union

Did the US break torture law

Those legal memos redefined torture very broadly to mean some extremely painful techniques could be used and still not technically constitute "torture".

Chris Anders of the American Civil Liberties Union (Aclu), said the timing is significant for those who believe that members of the Bush administration should face trial for authorising torture.

"If waterboarding was being used then, there’s no one who would be able to say that they were relying on a legal opinion because there was no legal opinion at that point to rely upon," Mr Anders said.

Officials may have been given the legal go-ahead verbally prior to August, but it is not clear how much weight that would have in courts should a decision be taken to prosecute those who authorised or carried out the harsh methods.

"Simply having a lawyer say that something is okay is not a defence, or is not much of a defence anyway", said Anders.

Prosecutions possible

US President Barack Obama announced in April that he would not seek to use anti-torture laws to prosecute CIA agents who relied in good faith on Bush administration legal opinions issued after the 11 September attacks.

Barack Obama

Mr Obama’s assurance came after the release of memos detailing those legal opinions on the range of techniques the CIA was allowed to use during the Bush administration, including waterboarding.

In his first week in office, Mr Obama banned the use of waterboarding. Rights groups have criticised the decision not to seek prosecutions.

Mr Obama has not closed the door on the possibility of prosecuting those who gave the controversial legal advice.

His administration has described waterboarding as torture. </p
