Zappa’s Congressional Testimony Released on CD

25TH ANNIVERSARY OF CONGRESSIONAL TESTIMONY

Congress Shall Make No Law…

On September 19th, 2010, Zappa Records released Congress Shall Make No Law . . . It is a CD
containing Frank Zappa‘s 1985 remarks against the censorship of free expression by artists. The hearings,
influenced in no small part by the then newly-formed Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) headed by
Susan Baker and Tipper Gore to promote a rating system for recorded music, in response to
such Bills as H.R. 2911 concerning the collection of a blank tape tax to benefit the recording industry, were recorded
on Capitol Hill and at Annapolis, MD.

Congress Shall Make No Law . . . features over 40 minutes of Frank Zappa’s uncut testimony.
Zappa’s attorney, Larry Stein, who accompanied Zappa to the Senate hearing in 1985, contributed liner
notes for the
CD; artist Bill Miller designed the stunning album cover.

According to Gail Zappa, Congress Shall Make No Law . . . is released as an educational
project, representing Zappa’s tireless commitment to the First Amendment which he felt his duty to protect by
providing (in his words) “stimulating digital audio entertainment” in the form of “material which a truly free society
would neither fear nor suppress.”

Zappa Bust to be Unveiled in Baltimore on 9/19

SEPTEMBER 19 WILL BE DECLARED “FRANK ZAPPA DAY” IN BALTIMORE

Details of events were announced today for the unveiling of a sculpture of Frank Zappa and celebration
honoring the composer for the legacy of his music and his commitment to the First Amendment.
September 19, 2010 marks the 25th anniversary of Zappa’s testimony on Capitol Hill and at Annapolis against the
censorship of free expression by artists. In commemoration of this event, Zappa Records is preparing to release
Congress Shall Make No Law, a CD containing Frank Zappa’s testimony. As part of the
celebrations, the Mayor’s office will issue a proclamation moving annual ‘Frank Zappa Day’ to September 19 in
Baltimore.

Frank Zappa’s son Dweezil Zappa will headline a special concert with his Grammy Award-winning band,
Zappa Plays Zappa. The
stretch of Eastern Avenue between Conkling and Eaton Streets in the heart of the Highlandtown Arts and
Entertainment District will be marked ‘Frank Zappa Way’ with a ceremonial street sign to be unveiled for the
dedication. The events, including the outdoor dedication and concerts, are open to the public at no charge.

Although the dedication ceremony and the concert are FREE to the public, special VIP passes for the concert are
available at www.missiontix.com (keyword Zappa),
providing access to a reserved viewing enclosure close to the concert stage, talent meet-and-greets, and other fan
incentives.

John Hiatt: The Open Road

JOHN HIATT TO RELEASE THE OPEN ROAD MARCH 2

John Hiatt

Looking at life through the rearview mirror was the inspiration for John Hiatt‘s brand new album, The Open Road, due out March 2 via New West Records. The legendary songwriter’s 19th studio album is classic Hiatt, picking up the tempo and returning to rock following his previous critically acclaimed Same Old Man.

Backed by his touring band, (Kenny Blevins on drums, Patrick O’Hearn on bass and Doug Lancio on guitars), the songs are inspired by life on the road, without looking back. “All the other years, my songs are about coming home,” Hiatt says.

Hiatt will take the new songs on the road beginning with a run of international dates with Lyle Lovett. Upon returning to the states, he will appear on the 3rd annual Cayamo Cruise, on which he’s played since the first voyage. Tour dates in North America will follow in March, with stops in New York City on March 10 followed by Pittsburgh, DC and Annapolis, which is already sold out.

Hiatt has written songs covered by a multitude of artists in a wide variety of genres including Bob Dylan, Rosanne Cash, Willie Nelson, Jewel and Bonnie Raitt, who most famously recorded “Thing Called Love.” On The Open Road he showcases both his lyrical and musical talent with his blues driven, rock songs including the title track and “Haulin’.” Hiatt produced The Open Road himself after recording with his band in his garage-turned-studio.

Carolina Chocolate Drops: Genuine Negro Jig & Tour

CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS’ GENUINE NEGRO JIG OUT 2/23

Carolina Chocolate Drops

Nonesuch Records is set to release Genuine Negro Jig, the label debut of North Carolina-based string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops on February 23. The album was produced by critically acclaimed recording artist and songwriter Joe Henry (Allen Toussaint, Elvis Costello, Solomon Burke).

Genuine Negro Jig features string band interpretations of Blu Cantrell‘s beat-box driven R&B single “Hit ‘Em Up Style” and Tom Waits‘ “Trampled Rose,” as well as a pair of original compositions, alongside traditional tracks such as “Cornbread and Butterbeans” and “Trouble in Your Mind.”

It is the band’s second record; their 2007 release, Dona Got a Ramblin’ Mind, was praised by Paste for “bravely and expertly reclaiming the string band tradition for modern African-American culture,” while NPR‘s Weekend Edition calls the band “the hottest thing to hit the old-time music community in decades.” The band is touring in advance of the album’s release, dates below.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops formed after band members Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson met at the Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, NC in 2005, and have toured continuously since the band’s inception. All three trained in the Piedmont banjo and fiddle musical tradition under the tutelage of Joe Thompson, who, at age 90, is believed to be the last living performer from the Piedmont string band heyday. While old-time Southern string music is often associated with Caucasian musicians from Appalachia, Giddens pointed out in a recent NPR interview that “it seems that two things get left out of the history books. One, that there was string band music in the Piedmont, period. (And that) black folk was such a huge part of string tradition.” The Carolina Chocolate Drops seek to not only correct this misunderstanding, but to keep the centuries-old string music tradition alive and developing.

The members of Carolina Chocolate Drops all come from diverse musical backgrounds, sharing singing duties and swapping instruments throughout their sets. Flemons has immersed himself in the music of the past, with a prodigious record collection and an immense knowledge of the different playing styles of the blues, country, and string band traditions. In addition to her work with Joe Thompson, Giddens — a Piedmont native — studied opera at Oberlin Conservatory, performs with a Celtic band and is also an avid contra dancer and caller. Robinson, the group’s main fiddler, also plays banjo; he grew up in a house full of musicians—his mother is a classically trained opera singer and cellist, his sister a classical pianist and his grandfather a harmonica player.

Greensky Bluegrass/Sheaffer Tour

GREENSKY BLUEGRASS TEAMS WITH RAILROAD EARTH’S TODD SHEAFFER FOR TOUR

Greensky Bluegrass

Perennial bluegrass favorite Greensky Bluegrass has joined forces with Todd Sheaffer of Railroad Earth for an inspiring one-week tour in December.

Greensky Bluegrass is one of the most exciting bands in today’s music scene. Since winning the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest, Greensky has been touring the country consistently, averaging over 170 shows a year and playing to many sold out audiences along the way. In a very short time the band has performed with the likes of Tony Rice, Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Railroad Earth, and have performed at Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rothbury and more. Add in the talents of Todd Sheaffer from Railroad Earth and you have one of the most well-rounded set of performers onstage today. Known for his soulful vocal delivery and song-writing skills, Sheaffer brings much more than just another acoustic guitar to the stage.

On any given night, in addition to the myriad of original songs, one might hear traditional bluegrass songs with an exploratory rock and roll jam, or selections from the Talking Heads, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, or Bob Marley in the bluegrass form. “We are as likely to play a three minute song as we are a ten minute song on any given night,” says dobro player Anders Beck, “and I think that keeps it exciting for the audience.”

This is not the first collaboration between Greensky Bluegrass and Railroad Earth. Greensky is currently on tour in support of their recently released fourth album, Five Interstates, which was produced by Railroad’s Tim Carbone. Their strongest album to date, the 12 track journey features 11 original songs and one traditional bluegrass song (a nod to the deceased King of Bluegrass, Jimmy Martin). Carbone notes on the package: “Five Interstates came together like five lives intertwined, the intersection of a lifetime frozen in precious time and preserved in a digital tableau. I’m blessed… we’re all blessed to be witness to a band ascending as true as an arrow shot to the sky.”

The Avett Brothers

An interesting phenomenon occurs when a band breaks through and outgrows its loyal fan base. The rare opportunity arises where they try their damndest to play an intimate show that mimics their early days, yet pre-show conversations tend towards a comparison of who caught the band at the smallest venue, which fans are there for the first time, and how much better it would be if the crowd was all true fans.

On Tuesday night, when The Avett Brothers performed a largely unknown New York City release party for their latest effort, I and Love and You (released September 29 on American Recordings – stream it here), to maybe 150-200 diehard fans and friends at the tiny basement bar called Envoy Enterprises, the evening predictably began like the above scenario. Yet oddly enough, once the music began peoples’ guards dropped. What previously felt like a crowded floor verging on a traffic jam opened up into a friendly chatterbox of new pals with a purpose, i.e. getting to know each other’s connections to the band, talking about what they wanted to hear and cheering like Premier League hooligans.

Praises for the new album were sung, yet not as boomingly as by the music press. While being hailed as a ‘Best of the Year’ candidate by the rags (not ridiculous by any stretch), many folks frankly seemed to say, “It’s pretty and all but I like it when they rock out.” Well, that was just before the show. As much as this sentiment rings true for some of the newer material in the album format – where no shortage of love themes and a smattering of piano-driven ballads take the place of raging banjo strums – even the heartfelt pieces emanate bursting energy in the live setting, particularly when Scott Avett gets behind the drums. Moreover, they did rock out, particularly on the harrowing imagery-laden rager “Slight Figure Of Speech,” hollering the line, “I cut my chest wide open.”

The locale should have come as no surprise to Avett fans as Scott showed his artwork at the bar back in 2008 – as was the case on this evening – in the upstairs floors of the space, which function as an art gallery, while the basement played host to the bar and stage where the Avetts performed. After the show, the band retreated upstairs to chat and sign posters.

The Avett Brothers

A small show like this invites interplay with the crowd, and despite the obvious need by the band to play a hefty dose of new tunes from the new album – this being a release party and all – the crowd did not hesitate to request no less than 450 favorite songs. The highlight of this interplay came after a “Chesterfield” shout out, which I believe is just a town and not an actual song. Confused, the Avetts took the banter in stride, commenting about the time they spent in Chesterfield recording A Carolina Jubilee, which led to the fan favorite “Pretty Girl from Annapolis,” which then segued into “Mary,” by the Avett’s old touring friend Langhorne Slim.

“Kick Drum Heart,” the standout catchy tune from the new album, came early in the set and earned a warm reception. This song sounds a lot like Matt Costa’s “Mr. Pitiful” and will indeed become a mass appeal staple, but may perhaps be less well received by longtime fans. Frankly, the Avetts possess heavy-duty followers, so this may become more a symbol of the major label changeover than a fan favorite. Nonetheless, the song sounds whimsical and uplifting.

Other standouts included the I and Love and You track “Ten Thousand Words,” which highlighted some honest to goodness guitar soloing and the newer-than-the-new-album tearjerker “Skin and Bones,” with gorgeous cello work by Joe Kwon and Scott Avett rocking on drums.

“I wanna fit into the perfect space; feel natural and safe in a volatile place.”

The Avett Brothers know how to work a crowd. After stomping through a smattering of old and new tunes and joking that they were excited to have finally played Madison Square Garden, the band silenced the crowd with a heartfelt “Perfect Space” that said everything about performing at an unquestionably populous yet not-quite-irritatingly small venue. The crowd packed the place. My neighbors and I joked about this being the first time New York City brought out all the tall people to a show. While most fans probably saw little more than the ornate neck of Bob Crawford‘s stand-up bass peaking out over the tops of heads, the room felt overwhelmingly cheerful.

Despite the New York locale, The Avett Brothers took a pass on the title track off the new record with its Brooklyn hearty nod, but performed a much longer, more passionate than expected, free private show. Guess the New York crew will have to wait until Terminal 5 on October 17 to hear “I and Love and You,” but The Avett Brothers proclaimed their love of the crowd and the crowd gave it back. With Rick Rubin‘s producing credit and an undeniably catchy overall feel, their major label debut will likely grow the Avetts out of their small town britches. However, with this intimate fan “thank you,” they proved that they could never grow out of their skin.

Living Colour Announce North American Tour

New Album The Chair In The Doorway Set For Release September 15

Living Colour

Living Colour has announced North American tour dates in support of the new album The Chair In The Doorway. The 28-date run will be bookended by performances at the Highline Ballroom in New York City, as they appear August 11 opening for The Roots, at their weekly Tuesday night jam session, and then again on October 30 for their own headline performance.

The Chair In The Doorway, set for release September 15, was recorded at Sono Studios just outside of Prague in the Czech Republic. Renowned producer Count (Galactic, Lyrics Born, No Doubt) was onboard to helm the sessions, while Ron St. Germain (U2, Mos Def, Muse) mixed the album. The 11-track collection is Living Colour’s most personal collection of songs yet with razor sharp lyrical observations and kinetic jams that seamlessly weave elements of metal, funk and soul. Vernon Reid described the album as, “an unintentional concept record about life and how we are all in this thing together.”
