Exxon to build diesel unit at Singapore oil refinery: Update

Exxon Mobil Corp. will build a diesel hydrotreater at its Singapore refining complex and increase its output of ultra-low-sulfur supplies by the equivalent of 2% of China’s demand for the transport fuel.

The world’s largest listed oil and gas company plans to boost supplies by 9 million liters a day to more than 25 million, Exxon said in an e-mailed statement today. The additional daily output is equivalent to 56,600 barrels. China may consume 2.87 million barrels a day of diesel this year, based on forecasts by the International Energy Agency.

The facility may be completed by 2014, Karen Wong, the company’s media relations and communications advisor in Singapore, said by telephone. She declined to specify the cost of the construction.

Exxon is spending more than $1 billion on diesel hydrotreaters at refineries in Baytown in Texas, Baton Rouge in Louisiana and in Belgium’s Antwerp to boost the plants’ capacity by 22 million liters a day. That’s about 140,000 barrels a day.

Diesel, or gasoil, has outpaced gains in crude as the global economic recovery bolsters fuel demand. In Singapore, gasoil’s premium to Dubai crude, the Asian benchmark, climbed to US$14.32 ($18.64) a barrel last week, the highest since January 2009, according to PVM Oil Associates, a brokerage.

Exxon’s Singapore refining complex, the company’s biggest globally, comprises a 296,000 barrel-a-day plant on Jurong Island off the country’s southwestern coast and a 309,000 barrel-a-day refinery on the mainland, according to its website.

Work goes on at Antwerp as White Knight sought

A video here from the ‘Welcome to Flanders’ website, which has put up some shots of the Opel factory in Antwerp, just 24h after the GM division announced it had ended its search for an industrial investor.

The Flanders government has apparently been involved in the discussions to find a bidder for the plant, that currently employs around 1,300 people, but the site’s future looks increasingly gloomy.

Opel has set a 31 December deadline for closure of the factory and estimates it will manufacture around 10,000 Astras between now and then.

Drive-By Trukers

Patterson Hood of the Drive-
By Truckers
issued this statement yesterday:

“Y’ALL:

We leave this week for next leg of DBT The Big To-Do Tour. This will be final USA leg of the tour and it’s a
good one. Our opening act for most of it are The Henry
Clay People
who opened for us
earlier this year and are
Fantastic. We’ll also be playing a couple of dates with our dear friends Hill Country Revue who put on a
kickass show.

Don’t forget, there’s a little more time before the deadline to enter
the Nuci’s Space / Drive-By Truckers Halloween Rock’ N
Raffle
. The Winner will get all inclusive
trip for two to see DBT in our beloved Richmond VA at The National (one of the greatest venues in America) on
Halloween Weekend. Our dear artist Wes Freed (who does all DBT artwork) lives there and we’ll be going
all out celebrating Halloween that Saturday Night. Prizes include airfare, VIP tickets for two (including Meet and
Greet w/ band), hotel accommodations and spending cash. It’s a $2000.00 valued prize and entering is only $5 plus
you’re supporting a great cause. Go to www.rocknraffle.com for more details.

We’ve been wanting to play a Halloween Show in Richmond for years and are finally getting to do it (at least on the
29th and 30th). Richmond is a beautiful and somewhat haunted town that has inspired Edgar Allen Poe, Wes Freed
and certainly us. The National is an amazing venue and Bobby Bare Jr is opening, playing songs off of his stellar new
album A Storm – A Tree – My Mother’s Head which will be on my year end list.

Tickets are selling fast for our upcoming European / UK Tour. The UK dates look like they’ll all sell out in advance
and the European sales are by far our fastest and best yet. It’s been too long and we plan on making it up and then
some.

We’re also gearing up for our year end finale in NYC for NYE. More details to be announced soon. We also recently
added a show in Philly on Jan 1 at the TLA, tickets are on sale now for both shows<www.drivebytruckers.com/tour>.

Iniesta wins World Cup for Spain

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – Spain won the World Cup for the first time when they beat Netherlands 1-0 after extra time thanks to a goal by midfielder Andres Iniesta.
Iniesta fired home the winner when he was put through in the area by Cesc Fabregas. Keeper Maarten Stekelenburg dived to his right and got a hand to the ball he could not keep it out.
The defeat was heartbreaking for the Dutch, who were down to 10 men after John Heitinga was sent off in extra time. It was their third World Cup final loss after 1974 and 1978.
European champions Spain had looked the more assured early on in the clash at Soccer City as a nervous-looking Dutch side ceded territory to their slick opponents.
Stekelenburg was forced into a save after five minutes when Sergio Ramos headed a Xavi cross goalwards while Spain forward David Villa crashed a volley into the side netting with the goal looming.
But a series of freekicks and bookings, including two strong challenges by Dutch midfielders Nigel de Jong and Mark van Bommel, shook Spain out of their rhythm and stopped them from producing the swift-passing game that got them to the final.
Netherlands offered little in attack and the nearest they came to a first-half goal was a bizarre incident when Gregory van der Wiel attempted to give the ball back in an act of sportsmanship.
The fullbackÂ’s 60-meter punt bounced up and over Spain captain Iker Casillas, forcing the startled keeper to leap and tip it to safety.
The game continued with frequent stoppages and few chances, until Wesley Sneijder split the Spanish defense with a perfectly-weighted ball into the path of Arjen Robben after 62 minutes only for Casillas to save brilliantly with his feet.
In a lively end to normal time Villa had a shot blocked in front of the line, an unmarked Ramos headed wildly over the bar from five metres out and Puyol was lucky to escape punishment after hauling down a furious Robben.
In extra time it was StekelenburgÂ’s turn to save with his feet when substitute Fabregas was sent clear by Iniesta.
Netherlands had to play with 10 men for the last 10 minutes of extra time when John Heitinga was sent off for hauling down Iniesta on the edge of the box.
The little midfielder got back on his feet and soon after was celebrating scoring the winning goal in the World Cup final to send the delighted Spanish fans into raptures.
Meanwhile, a thunderous roar erupted across the Spanish capital and fans danced in the streets and chanted “Viva Espana!” as the country’s first ever World Cup trophy sparked a nationwide fiesta.
The centre of the capital was a sea of the red and gold national colours as Spain celebrated its agonising 1-0 extra-time win over Holland on Sunday.
The deafening sounds of cheering, klazons, firecrackers and cars horns rang out across the city as the World CupÂ’s perennial underachievers won the trophy in their first appearance in the final.
In temperatures of 37 C (99 F), more than 150,000 supporters watched the match on massive screens in a giant “fan park” in a one-kilometre (half-mile) stretch of the city’s main thoroughfare.
Others crammed into bars or stayed home for the match, which left the country paralysed Sunday evening.
Many were wrapped in the Spanish flag, wore the red team shirts or red wigs, or had their faces painted red and gold.

Mandela appears at final, crowning South AfricaÂ’s World Cup
JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – Nelson Mandela crowned South AfricaÂ’s World Cup Sunday with an appearance on the field at the closing ceremony, as 700 million viewers tuned in to watch SpainÂ’s 1-0 victory over Netherlands.
The 91-year-old flashed his famous smile and waved to the nearly 85,000 fans in Johannesburg as he circled the pitch alongside his wife Graca Machel in an open-air vehicle, in a brief but proud moment the nation had long waited for.
He was greeted by cheers of “Madiba”, his clan name used affectionately by his compatriots, which rang louder than applause for any of the stars at the closing show that illuminated the stands in fireworks and lights.
The anti-apartheid hero’s family had earlier hit out at FIFA “pressure” and he only decided two hours earlier to join 17 world leaders, royalty and a raft of Hollywood stars who have jetted into Johannesburg.
Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, his grandson, told AFP that he would return home to watch the game.
Mandela had cancelled on the June 11 opener when his 13-year-old great-granddaughter was killed in a car crash.
“We’re also a family in mourning. We should allow my grandfather to mourn,” the grandson said earlier.
“FIFA should have taken that into consideration and stop pressuring” for Mandela to attend, he added.
The moment inevitably recalled South AfricaÂ’s 1995 rugby World Cup victory when Mandela donned the jersey of the nationÂ’s mainly white Springboks, in a moment now seen as a symbol of national healing.
The Nobel laureateÂ’s spirit has loomed large over AfricaÂ’s first World Cup, which has been repeatedly compared to the national euphoria that greeted his release from an apartheid prison 20 years ago.
South Africa has delighted in proving wrong sceptics’ fears about the host country’s ability to pull it off, with President Jacob Zuma calling it “a truly inspiring, moving and uplifting month.”
Tickets to the sold-out final resold for up to 2,500 dollars online, more than double the highest official price.
FIFA says overall attendance at all World Cup matches has topped three million, only the third tournament to do so, and predicts the television audience will top 700 million with live broadcasts in 215 countries and territories
During the closing show, Colombian “Waka Waka” superstar Shakira performed on the field, which was transformed into a giant screen used to project a highlights reel of the tournament’s best moments.
More than 700 performers showed off the nationÂ’s varied musical heritage, from jazz to urban hip-hop, while giant elephant puppets glided across the field.
Police deployed heavy security around the stadium, restricting access to the cityÂ’s main highway and banning flights overhead.
Hundreds of Dutch and Spanish fans paid top dollar to jet into Johannesburg for the match, as both nations angled to hoist the World Cup for the first time, creating huge anticipation for fans at home.
In Madrid police closed a one-kilometre (half-mile) stretch of the main thoroughfare for a “fan park” where some 150,000 supporters of “La Roja” (The Reds) gathered for a victory fiesta that was likely to last all night.
Amsterdam had to urge people to stop coming into a city square where 100,000 people gathered to watch, while Dutch flags draped from homes, some of which had been entirely covered in orange plastic sheets.

Opel/Vauxhall elements coming together

Although General Motors announced quarterly results last week that put it back in the black, its European operations remained in the red. But there was some good news for GM in Europe last week.

GM, you’ll recall, did a 180 last year on plans to sell its Opel/Vauxhall operations when it realised it could ride any associated liquidity issues. And if it could possibly hang on to Opel/Vauxhall, then that would be a sensible course of action, GM’s executives decided. Getting rid of superfluous brands is one thing, but a truly global car company needs market presence in Europe.

That just left the small matter of actually turning those European operations around. A restructuring plan has been devised that entails shutting Antwerp and re-jigging assembly operations elsewhere to get capacity utilisation near to where it should be. GM will inject funds into Opel/Vauxhall and loan guarantees are being sought from European governments where facilities are located – most notably the German government.

Last week we learned that Opel/Vauxhall’s European workers had agreed to measures that would substantially cut the company’s wage bill – in return for investment in new product. It’s an important step in getting Berlin to sign-off on loan guarantees.

That we are living in strange times is illustrated by the scale of the German government’s contribution to the EU’s eurozone bailout. The contribution from German taxpayers to help the likes of Greece is a staggering EUR148bn. The request for loan guarantees for Opel – to help protect jobs in Germany, remember – is up to a figure that is 1% of that. Strange times indeed.

There are challenges ahead (not least getting to break-even in 2011), but at least the elements in Opel/Vauxhall’s restructuring plan are now coming together.

Rihanna kicks off European tour in ultra-sexy outfits

Sexy singer Rihanna wowed her fans with a range of stunning outfits as she kicked off her European tour.
The most notable of her dresses was a raunchy black outfit.
“The show was incredible, she even rides around on a giant gun,” the News of the World quoted a source as saying, about her gig in Antwerp, [...]

Alberta Cross Sells Out Shows Across The U.S., Tour Confirmed With Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Alberta Cross

Alberta Cross just wrapped up their first ever nationwide headlining tour where they performed to sold out crowds in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC, San Francisco and more. This spring, Alberta Cross will tour with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Their latest album, Broken Side of Time arrives on the heels of their EP The Thief & the Heartbreaker, which earned the band U.K. touring slots with Oasis, The Shins and Bat For Lashes.

Founded by guitarist/vocalist Petter Ericson Stakee and bassist Terry Wolfers, Alberta Cross took shape when the two began jamming together in London’s east end. Stakee, from London by way of Sweden, and Wolfers, a Brit himself, moved to New York City in 2008 in pursuit of renewed creative energy and new challenges. Broken Side of Time is born of the struggles and setbacks the band faced along the way. The album serves as Alberta Cross’ official introduction to the U.S.

As Stakee explains, “It’s kind of a desperation album, a darker album; it’s definitely angrier. We’ve been in a crazy place during the whole album and you can hear that.”

Led by Stakee and Wolfers, Alberta Cross is rounded out by guitarist Sam Kearney, drummer Austin Beede and keyboardist Alec Higgins. Broken Side of Time was recorded in Austin, TX and produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Dead Confederate, Heartless Bastards). John O’Mahony (Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Kasabian) mixed the album at Electric Lady in New York City.

Rationalising capacity in Europe

Last week saw General Motors in Europe move to close its Antwerp plant. Announcements of plant closure are never happy events, but this is an important step in improving GM’s European manufacturing efficiency and raising its rate of capacity utilisation. We will know more about GM’s European plans by the middle of next month when a business plan is finally supposed to emerge.

As Nick Reilly has said, they would rather get that Opel/Vauxhall business plan right than rush it. That’s fair enough, but further delay will cause consternation for the workforce and GM’s suppliers. There comes a point at which you have to put stakes in the ground and say to the world: this is the plan. And while we are on the subject of things appearing to be a little drawn out, it would be good to know what’s happening to Saab. Maybe this week we will find out.

Also on the European production capacity front, last week saw some curious goings on at Renault. It was mooted that the next Clio (Clio 4 – due to enter production in 2013) might be made wholly in Turkey and not in France. Turkey is a low-cost place to make cars and, although it is not a member state of the EU, it enjoys a customs union with the EU and so is a particularly good place to source cars cheaply for sale in the EU area. A number of manufacturers, including Renault, have been quietly expanding operations there over the past decade.

This Clio 4-from-Turkey-only possibility did not go down too well with the French government. President Sarkozy duly hauled Messrs Ghosn and Pelata into a meeting. Afterwards, Ghosn declared that there would be dual sourcing on Clio 4 – some continuing to be made in France (at the Flins plant) and some in Turkey. What was less clear was the split between the two locations. The French production is presented as being dependent on capacity considerations concerning the Zoe electric vehicle – due in 2012 – at Flins. So, it’s still a bit murky as far as Clio 4 in France goes. All Renault is signed up for is to make some in France. Numbers and the time period are unspecified.

But Sarkozy could claim he’d got something out of the meeting – an assurance that Clio will continue to be made in France. There are French regional elections in March, so that may explain some of the heightened political interest in French car companies right now. But, as Opel’s failed sale last year also demonstrated, the political dimension to capacity rationalisation in Europe remains important and frequently runs counter to business logic.

Later this week (on Thursday) Ford releases its 2009 Q4 and full-year financial results. Will they be good results, Ford posting a decent profit? Quite possibly if Ford’s Q4 sales figures are anything to go by. If Ford does post good financials it is likely that Alan Mulally will bring forward the guidance on when Ford will be full-year profitable from 2011 to 2010.

Ford has been through some pretty painful restructuring in North America to get its cost base there down. Sooner or later, European-based car companies will probably have to bite that bullet, however politically unpalatable, in order to have a shot at long-term success. Productivity improvements – helpful though they are – can only take you so far.
