NATO approves expanded missile defense shield

The National Assembly of Hungary on Monday approved the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) between the European Union and Serbia. The bill with which Hungary approves the Agreement was backed by 315 parliament members, two voted against it, while 43 abstained from vote, the Hungarian national news agency MTI reported late on Monday.

CCI approves construction of Bhasha Dam


ISLAMABAD – The Council of Common Interests (CCI) Sunday unanimously approved the construction of Diamer-Bhasha Dam, paving the way for its funding by the international donors.
The dam having water storage capacity of 6.4 MAF would produce 4,500 MW of electricity and would pay back its construction cost within eight years after its completion in 2019.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani who chaired the meeting of the CCI at Prime MinisterÂ’s House said that the passage of the resolution with voice vote reflected the Government policy of national consensus and it would have a positive bearing on the future progress and prosperity of the country.
The Prime Minister gave special directions to the Ministry of Water & Power to develop a scheme for infrastructure development to support the early completion of Thar Coal Project. He further directed the Ministry of Railways to give a detailed briefing to turn Railways into a viable entity. The Premier also directed the Statistics Division for a briefing on Population Census in the next meeting of the CCI.
The CCI, which met for the first time after the passage of the 18th Amendment Bill, took up five agenda items in which rules and procedures for the newly constituted CCI were passed. According to the Constitution, the CCI was required to meet within the prescribed timeframe of 90 days after the enactment of the 18th Amendment Bill.
The CCI was given a detailed briefing by Mian Raza Rabbani, Chairman Implementation Committee on various stages of implementation of 18th Amendment Bill and the work so far undertaken by the Implementation Committee.
The meeting took note of the NEPRAÂ’s Annual Report 2008-09 and the Statement of Industries Report 2009. The Council constituted a sub-committee to submit its report within one month on the working and functioning of NEPRA. The sub-committee is comprised Syed Naveed Qamar, Minister for Petroleum & Natural Resources, Arbab Alamgir Khan, Minister for Communications, Mir Humayun Aziz Kurd, Minister for Livestock and Dairy Development, and Mian Raza Rabbani. The Chief Ministers of the provinces will also name their nominees for the said sub-committee.
With regard to Intellectual Property OrganisationÂ’s summary, seeking provincial support for implementation of Intellectual Property Rights, the Council directed that the summary be resubmitted after consultation with the provinces by incorporating appropriate changes in the law.
The meeting was attended by all its members including Chief Minister Punjab Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Chief Minister KP Ameer Haider Khan Hoti, Chief Minister Balochistan Muhammad Aslam Raisani, Syed Naveed Qamar and Mir Humayun Aziz Kurd. Mian Raza Rabbani attended the meeting as special invitee.

Russia approves more powers for FSB

Russia’s lower house of parliament, the Duma, has backed a controversial bill to extend the powers of the country’s main intelligence agency, the FSB.
Under the legislation, the service would be able to issue formal warnings to anyone whose actions it believes could lead to a crime. Supporters say this will help tackle terrorism and extremism.

France-s lower house of parliament has approved a ban on full-length veils known as the burqa or niqab, which are worn by Muslim women. There were 335 votes for the bill and just one against.

European Union approves SAA ratification

The Council of the European Union decided today to submit the SAA with Serbia to the member-states’ parliaments for ratification. A statement issued following the meeting in Luxembourg on Monday said that after the latest report of Chief Hague Prosecutor Serge Brammertz, the Council “notes that Serbia has maintained its cooperation with the Tribunal with a view to delivering further positive results”.

The Spanish parliament has backed a 15bn-euro ($18.4bn; £13bn) austerity package by one vote as the country strives to cut its budget deficit. The vote saw 169 in favour of the Socialist government’s austerity plan and 168 against, with 13 abstentions.

The Bundestag has approved Germany’s portion of a 750-euro ($920 billion) rescue package from the EU and IMF for struggling eurozone economies. The result reflected a heated debate, with 319 “yes” votes, 73 “no” votes and 195 abstentions.
