Drug boss trial postponed

The crime group of suspected drug lord Darko Å arić was to go on trial today before Belgrade’s Special Court, today, but the trial was postponed for tomorrow. Only 11 of the 20 indicted members of the gang were set to appear before the judges, however. Å arić himself and six others are fugitives from justice and will be tried in absentia.

Serbia’s Independent Association of Journalists (NUNS) has created an online profile of Darko Å arić. Å arić is a fugitive from justice, believed to be behind massive drug smuggling operations.

Tourists spot drug lord in Montenegro

A group of Serbian tourists have reported seeing Darko Šarić on a regional road in northern Montenegro. Investigators were told that Šarić was seen in his Mercedes at a crossroads near the town of Žabljak, Belgrade daily Večernje Novosti writes.

Properties seized from “Šarić Clan” members

State Secretary in the Justice Ministry Slobodan Homen said that property has been seized from six persons associated with drug boss Darko Šarić. Šarić is suspected in Serbia of organizing the smuggling of 2.2 tons of cocaine, among other crimes.

Prosecution indicts Šarić crime group

Darko Šarić and 19 members of his criminal group have been indicted under the suspicion of being involved in cocaine smuggling activities. The Special Prosecution for Organized Crime charged Šarić and his group for cocaine smuggling activities in Serbia, Western Europe and South America, according to Special Prosecutor Miljko Radisavljević.

Opposition leader accuses Đukanović

Movement for Changes (PZP) leader Nebojša Medojević says there are strong indications that Montenegrin PM Milo Đukanović was protecting Darko Šarić. “We have strong indications that Đukanović was in fact protecting Šarić. Police and security agencies have been submitting information about Darko Šarić to the prosecutor for years, and the prosecutor never filed criminal charges against him. Đukanović was pressuring the prosecutor,” Medojević told Banja Luka-based daily Glas Srpske.

“15 countries report on Å arić”

Director of the Serbian Interpol Office Miloš Oparnica said that so far 15 countries have delivered information on Darko Šarić to Serbia. Šarić is suspected of being the leader of the biggest drug-dealing group in this part of Europe, and has an international warrant issued by Serbia for his arrest.

Officials on alert over crime boss

Going after Darko Å arić’s crime gang has jeopardized the safety of Serbia’s state officials involved in the investigation, a source from the Serbian MUP says. “Šarić is under protection of the most powerful Montenegrin mafia boss and that is why all measures are being taken so the strike of the Serbian security-police services against the Pljevlja Clan does not endanger the people who are directly leading the investigation,” Blic newspaper’s source was quoted as saying.

Montenegrin daily: Šarić is in Switzerland

Suspected cocaine boss Darko Šarić is in Switzerland, Podgorica-based daily Vijesti writes today, quoting “a diplomat from an influential country”. Serbia is looking for Šarić, currently a fugitive from justice, and has expressed concern that he might be hiding in Montenegro.

Serbian, Montenegrin justice ministers meet

The Šarić case was one of the main topics on the agenda as Justice Minister Snežana Malović met her Montenegrin counterpart Miraš Radović in Belgrade. Darko Šarić, a Montenegrin with Serbian passport, is currently at large, wanted as the chief suspect in the smuggling of more than two tons of cocaine. The international operation that prevented the trafficking was codenamed Balkan Warrior.

Police seal more Šarić apartments

Police have sealed two apartments of the Šarić family at 78 and 80 Arsenija Čarnojevića Blvd. in Belgrade today. The 180-square-meter apartments are formally owned by Danijela Šarić, Darko Šarić’s sister.

“No reason for Montenegro to refuse cooperation”

Interior Minister Ivica Dačić thinks that there is not a single reason for Montenegro not to arrest Darko Å arić, as there was “very clear evidence against him”. Å arić’s case has been creating tension and mutual accusations between the judicial authorities of Serbia and Montenegro.

Property seized from drug suspects

The Special Court has accepted the organized crime prosecution’s demand to seize all property temporarily Darko Šarić. Šarić owns the Kazino night club in downtown Kragujevac, several buildings in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Palić and other locations in Serbia, which will all be seized temporarily until his trial is finished.

“Å arić gang made EUR 1bn annually”

Darko Å arić’s crime group was making at least one billion euros a year, Ministry of Justice State Secretary Slobodan Homen says. Å arić, a Montenegrin who was given Serbian passport in 2005, is currently at large, while his gang is suspected of last year organizing the smuggling of over two tons of cocaine from South America to Europe.

Dačić doesn’t rule out resignation

Ivica Dačić says he will not “shy away” from resigning if speculation about alleged ties between his associates and the Å arić brothers turn out to be true. Dačić is first deputy PM and interior minister in the current Serbian government. Darko Å arić, his brother and their crime group are suspected of attempting to smuggle more than two tons of cocaine from South America to Europe.

Šarić associates taken into custody

Four persons have been taken into custody in Novi Sad on Monday as a part of an investigation against Darko Šarić. Šarić is suspected of being behind an attempt to smuggle 2.5 tons of cocaine from South America.

Cabinet chief denies ties to crime boss

Interior Minister Ivica Dačić’s cabinet chief, Branko Lazarević, has denied that he had connections with Darko Šarić. Šarić is among a group of suspects believed to have been involved in smuggling tons of narcotics, and is currently at large.

Montenegrin drug runner has Serbian passport

Darko Šarić, suspected of smuggling over two tons of cocaine from Uruguay, has had Serbian citizenship since May 30, 2005. His younger brother Duško Šarić and another suspect in cocaine trafficking, Goran Soković, have Montenegrin citizenship.
