WHEN Rene Magritte was 13 years old, his mother drowned herself in a local river. When the body was recovered her face was found to be covered with her nightdress. Fresh off a hugely successful co-heading U.S. tour with Wale, A&M/Octone recording artist K’naan picked up two trophies at the 2010 Juno Awards in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Toronto native earned statuettes for
“Artist of the Year” and “Songwriter of the Year” at the ceremony, which celebrates the best in Canadian music. In
categories that included notable names such as Michael Buble, Diana Krall and Metric, K’naan expanded his lifetime haul of Juno’s to three. In one of the night’s most
memorable moments, K’naan, along with Drake, Justin
Bieber and Nikki Yanofsky performed his global hit single “Wavin’ Flag” to close the show. The original of this
all-star version was re-recorded as a single with proceeds going to Haiti relief and has since gone to the top of the
Canadian pop charts and has been certified double platinum.
